Wait, so this has bigger screens, better battery, better 3D, it's more comfortable, it looks better, it's got rid of that stupid 3 ridge design and has a matte-style finish?

Hhhhhhnnngggggggggg..

The circle pad doesn't appear bigger to me, though, judging from the pictures.

Nope, it isn't.

Was probably psychological - looked bigger due to the rest of the console being larger. Anyway, I think I've found proof that the screen isn't glossy, or at least not to the extent of the original 3DS:

Look at the bottom right of the screen, where the black surround is. You can see a reflection on it - but it stops at the edge of the screen. If the screen was glossy, that wouldn't happen. But I'm probably wrong.

I havn't had tech envy this bad since Gameboy Advance SP. I think it's mostly because I have enjoyed my 3DS so much since purchasing it and this just looks like such an awesome upgrade.

Actually, upon looking at those comparison screenshots that were posted in this very thread, I was under the impression the circle pad was a tad bigger than regular one, in fact that was one of the things that stroke me.

I'm playing it just now and its a good example of a game that could do with a bit more size.

Yep. I brought it the night before the XL was announced, and now I'm gonna wait to play it. Same for Pushmo....and my current playthrough of Zelda. And everything else.

goddamnit.

Really great article at Gamasutra that sums up why hardware revisions work for Nintendo and gives insight to the strategy behind it.

Might have to take this question to a Sales thread, but:
Does anyone have any graphs/numbers similar to this but for global GBA shipments too?

I just wonder if some of that DS boost was also from GBA people jumping over finally (some must have been) and that with the 3DS it launched higher but obviously the XL did quite well too. Once the 3DS XL launches it'll be interesting to see and compare those numbers; but mainly I wanted to see how long GBA/SP kept selling (if at all).

Nintendo will likely have some sort of revision for the 'normal' 3DS I think (but current price means they really can't within a reasonable range. I wouldn't be surprised at a DSi like design early next year.

The hardware is looking great and I'll be there day 1, but man, those colors.

The DSi XL had a whole host of very classy, subdued colors at launch so it's even more disappointing to find the lack of those colors here. At the very least a completely black or white version would have been nice.

What the hell. Noone can be this dense.

to be fair, some people just don't know how it works and the image scaling by IGN is obviously quite different that what XL will do; what IGN has done is like watching DS games being scaled to the 3DS resolution which makes them look blurry and many people don't like it. But obviously there will be no scaling in XL whatsoever.

I mentioned in one of the threads that it'll be impossible to replicate what games look on XL screen using images.

From Google translate:
  • Huge screen
  • Better viewing angle
  • 3D effect looks better/more effective/more natural
  • 2D mode looks better than regular 3DS
  • Image looks better/softer (they assume there might be some filter but not sure)
  • The grip (round corners) fit nicely
  • Unit fits better in hands (they wonder if it should've been the main design in first place)
  • Unit is lighter than they expected
  • There's a coat in the unit (not fully matte) that gives it a "deluxe plastic imitating metal" look
  • Not sure at the sound as the room was quite noisy

Yeah not thrilled about the red or blue, silver would have been perfect for me. Oh well.

I know an XL version would tempt me, but I was nout prepared for the amount of hype I have for this. The French impressions are not helping either.

Only one thing is keeping me from preordering: the colours.

Yes, Europe gets silver, but what I really want is the Japanese white one. Simply because the area around the screen is also white!

Question I'm going to upgrade and was wondering if I bought a new 32 gb SD card could I transfer everything from that card to the new one using the 3DS transfer option on the system?

Any impressions on the Dpad? It looks like the location hasn't really been improved, will it still be terribly uncomfortable to use? There are VC games I wanna play...

No. It doesn't touch the SD card.

Use the system transfer, then copy the contents of the SD to another using a PC if you don't want to re-download all your shit

eh? it's much further up on the XL than on the original. look at it again.

Any good comparisons? I was worried about the distance from the top, not the distance from the bottom, but then again I am bad at figuring out what makes more ergonomic sense. I just want someone to say it's more comfortable to use haha.

I'd probably get one if it wasn't for the horrible two color casing.Just give me all black, all white or whatever.

I feared 3DS games would looks pixelated on this huge screen, but the preview makes it appear as a non concern, through the use of a filter. I'd love to see it with my own eyes.

Want a fully black one :(

Is £179.99 the best UK price at the moment? That's all I've seen so far...

If you were quick you could've got an order in yesterday for £140.73 with Tesco.
That's the best I've seen so far, next to that is a £157.95 pre-order at Zavvi.
I'm sure it's just a matter of time before better deals come around :)

Is there a picture of the XL closed viewed from the profile/front? Because the renders make the top look awfully curved and I wouldn't want it too curved.

New french preview here:
http://www.bamarenlive.com/2012/06/test-nintendo-3ds-xl.html

- the screen looks good, very good
- while the image looked worse on a DSiXL than on a DSi, it's not the case here. 3DSXL pixels look as defined as on 3DS.
- the screen seems very luminous
- 3D effect is more comfortable and more immediate
- the analog stick is more convenient to use, no need to bend your thumb anymore
