R&D budgets are separate from game budgets. General and OS applications may fall under R&D.

I'm fairly sure this is not at all true. R&D in their earnings reports has to include game developement (it's called research & development after all). The only things they're listing are, deprecation of property, capital investments, advertisement costs and R&D. No special clarification of hardware/software. In reality I believe their hardware team is quite small and 55 billion yen is a ridiculous amount of money.

Under "Selling, General, and Administrative Expenses", you see advertising is seperate from R&D which is seperate from salaries, bonuses, etc. Software budgets are going to almost entirely fall under advertising and salaries.

Not sure what documents you're looking at but their fiscal year earnings report doesn't actually mention salaries as far as I can see but I'd assume it takes up a large chunk of either category. The R&D cost alone is enough for twice the japanese average household income for every employee, so I doubt it's just for the hardware team and some OS features and Channels. Advertisement expenses are obviously advertisement expenses and sales/administrative costs doesn't sound like it has much to do with development. Not to mention that their development teams actually used to be called R&D1,R&D2 etc, regardless of whether they did mostly hardware or software.

Edit: I found the salaries number in the Annual Report. There's still nothing implying that R&D doesn't include software development though. I'm assuming R&D also includes outsourcing and payments to their subsidiaries like Hal/Retro/Monolith/Sora and second party developers, which wouldn't be included in salaries.

Nintendo R&D costs in US$ million (yen-US$ conversion by Nintendo unless specified otherwise)

*list
Thanks for the list :) Interesting to see the difference in R&D costs. Pity that the list doesnt go further back.

Yep, my bad.
No problem. I've done that typo a few times myself and it alters the meaning of the sentence quite much, so i just had to ask to be sure =)

Then it's also a guess if PSP ever made money.
Sure, if there is no statement or clear numbers that shows costs VS profits for a specific system, then it is a guess indeed. It goes for all systems.

I think it is a pretty safe guess to say that the PSP has been profitable looking at the ~70 million hardware units sold and ~330 million software sold, but it is a guess regardless if there is no statement or clear info on it.

I'm not disputing that PSP has been profitable, but your reasoning doesn't make any sense. The PS3 has sold 65M hardware and 600M software, but I would feel very safe in saying that the PS3 has been a highly unprofitable venture on the whole. The unit numbers don't mean anything without taking into account the costs involved in generating those numbers.

I havnt heard anything about that the PSP being sold at a huge loss, nor that the R&D costs were through the roof (we know this about the PS3, that is one of the main reasons why it takes so long to recuperate the losses). This is my reasoning and i think it makes sense. But yes, it is a guess.

I'm not saying that the Gamecube wasnt profitable by the way, i was just wondering what people based this on. There is also the question about how profitable it was (goes for all systems for that matter).

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Seems like predictions for B&W2 were spot-on (1.5m overall).

Mpl90

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
I'm not so sure about that.

Well, if we look at Amazon

Time Travellers 3DS - 271
Time Travellers Vita - 167

Between the fact the Sony versions have been available for preorders before the 3DS SKU and this delay for PSP, it seems Sony is trying at least with TT.

So Dengeki and Famitsu have tracked the game 10k and 15k higher than M-C in the first week. These are fantastic numbers.

I guess we could see a bigger drop next week from these two if M-C undertracked it and they've compensated this week.

03./01. [PSV] Persona 4 Golden <RPG> (Atlus) {2012.06.14} (¥7.329) - 29.293 / 166.369 (-79%)

06. (01) [PSV] Persona 4 Golden (Atlus) - 20,406 / 167,544 (-86%)

Whichever tracker was under/over tracked doesn't really matter much now. Dengeki and MC have the game at pretty much identical numbers after 2 weeks.

A difference of 10-15k between trackers is pretty small and is very common. It's when you get up to differences in the 50-100k range that you have to start scratching your head and wondering what happened (who's right/wrong?).

Sorry Chris1964, why # near to 3DS and to PSP?

The XL is 'far' and the GO ...are go :)

Go is gone but its sales are still included at PSP #. I did the changes to the database for XL last weekend and you'll keep seeing 3DS # for 4 more weeks before the release.

Over/Under on Dokuro selling 5k? There's been a tonne of demos, and the game's cheap because it looks as such.

Dokuro's a title that'll probably do a lot of digital business, even in Japan. It might push over 5k, though, simply because the demos and videos and whatnot have been pretty solid. I know I'm interested in it.

Really looking forward to some numbers on Ayesha after the reviews it pulled down (it got particularly insane numbers from Dengeki).

Poor Super Monkey Ball: Banana Splitz

Chicks w/big boobs playing the game didn't help you chart :(

I'm hoping the new release of AR cards will help Uprising get back in the Top 20

I think Dokuro looks like fun and the price should help it out somewhat. That being said it still might not do 5k.

Check out Harvest Moon 3DS back at number 30! That little game is enjoying some nice legs. I wonder if Rune Factory will benefit from this?

[3DS] Taiko Drum Master: Chibi Dragon (3 weeks) -

[PS3] Persona 4: Arena -
[3DS] New Super Mario Bros. 2 (1 weeks) -
[3DS] Demon Training (1 weeks) -

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Remember we're not guessing only first week sales. We're guessing the LTD.

Rules:
  • The official LTD is going to be the latest LTD number available from the Media Create top 20.
  • Any game missing in the MC top 20 will be taken out of the predictions.
  • Any game missing in your prediction will be considered as if you had predicted zero for its LTD.

Deadline: July, 4th 11:00 am (EDT)

Plus we should do 3DS LL predictions.

How about 3DS and 3DS LL sales in that week? I didn't include it already because it's not a LTD prediction, so people might be confused.

Was Monster Hunter 4 always thought to be an early 2013 game?

What's the big 3DS game for holiday-season 2012? Animal Crossing?
