Videogame facts that blow your mind (SuperMarioBros. SHOCKING SECRET INSIDE p #70)

Interesting, thanks for the responses!

Was Game Gear successful then? Cos it was a massive dud here in NZ at the time I think.

Fake edit: Now I've got the Toot Toot Sonic Warrior 8 bit music in my head, doh!
More than a lot of hand held duds. I'd say it was less successful than the PSP, but more successful than any other direct competitor to Nintendo's hand helds.

This is the Sonic 2 (game gear) ending I always knew

So .. I discovered today that the game ALSO has a BAD ending ...

Where Tails dies =O

So, by this logic, both Sonic and Tails die in the good ending, right? Since they both have Mufasa ghosts.

They're getting there.

More like no children and soon to be mostly elderly, with the massive graying the country has been undergoing and the low birthrate. But yes, suits are pretty standard everyday attire, or were at least until the Great East Japan Earthquake and the power shortage caused by shutting down all the country's nuclear plants. Now in the summer, most businesses allow short sleeved button down shirts and no ties or jackets to save on A/C expenses.

And yes, Japan has a very strong tobacco lobby with an extremely high percentage of smokers.

Fuck, I never managed to get the last emerald in sonic 2, so I've never actually seen the good ending.

Although I knew about it because it said in the instructions manual that you had to get all the emeralds to get to save Tails.

Not really the same logic since Sonic and Tails are looking UP at their ghosts, whereas Sonic is looking up at Tails alone.

It's confusing.

So if both of them are there..they're just looking at magic stars shaped like them. But if only sonic is there, it means tails died?

This is cool, and apparently a new thing they're doing? The Mother 3 episode was kind of interesting.
This brings me to something. There are remnants of an unused mechanic in Mother 3. The kindness stat (blog post there, my executive summary made up from the article and comments)

It doesn't appear on any stat screens. When using max EXP codes you will see the stat raise on level up. I assume the level up tables glitch after level 99 so add stats where they shouldn't be added. It appears that was since characters with no MP gain MP and so on.

Kindness does go up during the game and appears to be tied to certain actions. One example:
HexploringUser said:
Some actions in the game actually will modify the Kindness stat. As an example, talking to the
mouse in Osohe Castle
after defeating
Mr. Passion
will award Duster his first Kindness point.
It seems to have some small effect on healing (the spell was ~3 times stronger with 255 kindness) but given in a natural play through kindness won't get beyond 3 or 4 its negligible.

Speculation is sometime in Mother 3 development there was going to be some kind of moral choice system (apparently Itoi said something along those lines) so we can assume it is something to do with that. There are some unused sprites implying some events having a rather different outcome. For example chapter 1
Duster killing the mecha-draco
.

I guess the feature was dropped but the few instances of it changing were not removed.

Yeah, I referenced the bad ending in the Sonic Community thread OP lol.

I hated that game. For the longest time, it was the only game I owned on the Game Gear.

Same here. I had issues with the first boss kicking my ass all over the place due to that tiny screen.

Still, I would think that the situation with the picture would be the opposite, since some of the emeralds were in pretty obscure spots.

I'm sure I'm posting the obvious for 90% of you guys... BUUUUT, Ryu & Ken's Hadouken attacks are actually their hands in energy form. Look at their hands and at the center of the energy ball.

Though it was there to see in the original SFII, it wasn't too easy to spot unless you were looking for it. It became less obvious in later games and was even completely dropped in some later games. However, they made it as obvious as possible in the last pic:

/Late to thread with old news, lol.

This genuinely blew my mind.

The fact that something blew my mind before, and that it was wrong only to lead to another mindblowing fact about the same thing, is blowing my mind.

IIRC, there are Capcom Secret Files or development notes that state that Ryu and co's hands are supposed to appear when they do the Haduken.

That's correct, and also they're not actually "fire" balls but concentrated force ("chi"), so it feels like being hit really hard.

This is also why people get engulfed in flames, it's commonly accepted that fighters like Dhalsim are causing the illusion of fire that hurts but doesn't burn.

Yep. After sonic 2 for the game gear, every single sonic game are the dreams Sonic and Tails have whilst in a permanant coma. As the years go on, they're pleasant dreams turn into nightmares as the realization of never being truly awake dawns on their subconscious.

These nightmares take the form of Sonic's shitty games and friends. As do the sins of his past life. His gluttony for chili dogs takes the form of Big the Cat, knuckles is his short temper, and Amy rose, his repressed homosexuality.

Yup, also IIRC, Sagat learned to do projectile attacks from Dhalsim, or was that only in the UDON comics?

That was only in the UDON comics. They did a good job of shoehorning as much of the contradictory SF canon into a coherent story. I mean, realistically, the world is a HUGE place so none of these people should even know each other, much less know each other well enough to have serialized, familiar encounters.

The Hadouken stuff I knew or figured, but this... Now that is interesting.

I went to page 70 looking for a shocking Mario secret and I couldn't find it! Unless it's the thing about jumping the flag pole on 1-1, or that clouds are recoloured bushes?

What is this thread's shocking Mario secret?

Not sure if this was posted, but seen some one talking about the lost sonic 2 levels.

Thought it was pretty cool to actually see them. All the boss battles are recycled from the actual game levels though.

Note towards the end of the Genocide city level, surely gad this level ever been developed that testing would have shown almost every player would have died there!!

Edit : Finished the video, The Chemical Plant reskin as Death Egg was disappointing. The uploader claims that Sega originally intended for this zone (Chemical plant kinned as Death Egg) To be the final zone, then decided it was too easy and it became the Chemical Plant we know today.

The only real level there is Hidden Palace Zone. You can actually play it in certain versions of the game and you can restore the assets. Assets for wood zone also exist, but the level is fan made. Dust Hill is reproduced from a single screenshot in a magazine. Genocide City was also known as Cyber City. In cartridges you can load the level, but you just fall into a bottomless pit in a sea of garble graphics. Cyber City was originally going to be a level between Metropolis Zone and Sky Chase Zone, but they decided that since it was only going to be 1 act they might as well just use assets from Metropolis Zone. Thus, Metropolis Zone Act 3 IS Cyber City Zone. Some concepts from Cyber City were used in Sonic Spinball's The Machine level. Death Egg Act 1 is just based on the fact that Death Egg Zone in Sonic 2 uses Chemical Plant's graphics.

I'm not entirely sure how I picked up that bit of information, but I don't think they ever explicitly state that Fury is female in the first game. I think the only actual information given about the other riders is their names.

A mention was made in an interview about "Strife's guns," so the female is definitely Fury.

Kinda reminds me of this gem:

The Rugrats really were a figment of Angelica’s Imagination.

Chucky died a long time ago along with this mother, that’s why Chaz is a nervous wreck all the time.

Tommy was a stillborn, that’s why Stu is constantly in the basement making toys for the son who never had a chance to live.

The DeVilles had an abortion, Angelica couldn’t figure whether it would be a boy or a girl thus creating the twins
