A note to anyone trying to get Flash to work. Download the APK from this link. Some of the other i've tried haven't worked. So far this only works in Firefox though not perfectly. You can go into full screen on most sites though some (like Gamespot) won't fill in landscape. At least it doesn't crash though which happens in Dolphin and Oprah. Have not tried standard Android browser yet. Need to find an APK for it.

I don't know a single person with an Android device that pays for apps. They just google the name.apk and copy it. Combine that with a dev not having a fixed hardware spec to make an optimized app for and you understand why they aren't coming in droves. It's not market share that's the problem.

Wait 12 months sounds suspiciously like the Wait for X year of the PS3 blackboard meme.

Nah. The second wave of developers are showing up. This is how Android is getting Netflix, Spotify and Flipboard and the like. They don't depend on app sales to justify coming over to the platform as they commercialize in other ways. Totally different than the gaming space on consoles. The second wave of developers is all about disruptive business models whereas the first wave was all about app purchases being their primary business model.

Got my email about shipping (UK) from Google.
But I don't want it anymore I already got mine from ebuyer, I'm guessing returns to Google aren't easy :(

Don't open the box and have the shipper send it back. I have a feeling Google will get a fair number of returns from people who have found alternative sources of the units.

On the plus side, they are apparently "upgrading" everyone to next day shipping to get the units to folks faster.

I pay for them, there, you know one now.

I've purchased maybe 5 apps total if I don't count Humble Bundles or crazy 10 cent deals, but I've never stolen any. I've never even been to a site or forum where people were. Everywhere I go people talk about torrenting films. Never seen apps. Most of what you need can be found for free with ads. I've only gotten rid of some ads today with this free $25.00 if that counts. Pretty much works the same way Windows has for me. Though my parents bought some Windows programs back in 2000 with a computer so technically I've never bought any myself. I should donate more.

When did you order? I'm hearing loads of reports that people pre ordering on the 29th/30th are being shipped but there's no sign of movement at all on mine ordered on the 28th.
Argh.

Got mine today. Exactly two weeks after placing the order. Good job Google! ;)

It's not all good news though. I have 4 vertical bars of various colors running across the screen. The little searching I've done brings up similar issues on the Nexus phone and claims that it's a GPU issue. Looks like I'll be sending this one back and waiting on a replacement unit. :(

It functions perfectly otherwise though so I've been able to get a feel for the device. Really impressed. Some of you had me worried about the colors. They look great to me. I think the over saturated SAMOLED+ and similar screens have really thrown people off.

Welp, time to get the return process rolling...

Argh.

My 8GB ordered on the 27th and 16GB ordered on the 28th were dispatched yesterday. I put a note on my door telling TNT that I am refusing both deliveries and to return the item to the sender and it looks like they've taken note:

Receiver refused delivery. Awaiting instructions from sender.

Up to you now Google! I will accept nothing less than a full refund including delivery. I did ask to cancel my order on the 10th originally - to which I have still received no reply.

Fingers crossed for a shipping email today then!

Compared to the Ipad Mini, will this be comparable in specs or will it be blown away technically?

Got mine today. Battery life seems impressive compared to my phone.

For anyone wondering about their TNT delivery, you can ring 0800 100 600 (option 2) and they can let you know if it's scheduled for delivery. I just rang and they have nothing waiting to be shipped. Fuck you Google.

Did you pre-order at a store or on best buy site? It won't let me order online.

Don't see it on Bestbuy.com - how did you preorder?

Sorry I didn't respond until now. I'm Canadian and it was available for pre-order on bestbuy.ca with "limited quantities" and them expecting to receive stock on July 19th.

It seems like within 30 mins of me ordering, it changed to out of stock / unavailable for more pre-orders...

Hopefully that means they actually have a specific idea of how many they are getting in, and I made it!

MX Player for videos and FBReader for epubs would be my choice.

So far the only player i've been able to get MKV's to work in is VPlayer. MX Player is my favorite player, but there is no sound during MKV files when I use it. They update fast so i'm sure it will be fixed soon.

EDIT: Also of note is that VPlayer has DLNA support built in. Though a dedicated DLNA app might work better. Something like aVia Media Player or iMediaShare.

Coming from my Bionic, I had a he'll of a time figuring out how to get to the settings on the device. So used to hitting the menu button, but this thing doesn't have one. I swear took me 10mins to realize you need to open the settings app.

According to some posters at the Phandroid forums, it would seem a lot of the UK orders were delayed on the part of the distributor Computer2000 who seem to have put the first line of the address on every order as Gordon House (Google's Dublin HQ). Unbelievable.

Also it would seem that TNT only offer 1 day shipping so Google have had it wrong from the start.

Not just that, they're not putting the street name onto the package either.

So it looks something like:

Joe Bloggs
Gordon House
1
London
L1 1AA

Brilliant.

I'm losing faith that mine will ever turn up at this rate! How they could cock up the postal addresses is beyond me, let alone be able to sort them by order date.

I'm slightly worried that because my order updated itself on Monday, it now shows an order date of 16th July, I hope this doesn't mean I've missed the June 30th cut off.

If you originally ordered in June then you should be fine. I ordered on 3rd July and not even had payment taken yet so no clue what's going on with mine. The latest Google update now says I'll have mine sent next week but they just keep pushing the dates back so ... yeah.

If PC World or some other company gets them in stock beforehand, I'll get one from there.

Apparently Dixons/PC World orders are arriving today, people who ordered them yesterday now have them.

First "tablet" build of Tweet Lanes was posted by it's developer this morning. Seriously snappy.

https://t.co/G5rpTH4t

This guy is pushing a new version every 2 to 3 days with new features and he's doing a google+ poll in a few days to decide the fate of the tablet version.

On my phone, and posting for fellow NY peeps that are waiting for the first wave shipping clusterfuck to end: The Staples in Mt. Vernon (zipcode: 10550), should have about three units in the store.

Is there an unanimous decision on the best case?

Probably going to wait a couple days and if their aren't a bunch of impressions i'll say fuck it and order one of those i-blason or Moko ones on Amazon. They are fairly cheap so when something better comes along i'll get that. It's annoying how each of those i-blason cases has a feature I want, but doesn't combine them. Like I'm assuming this one doesn't stay closed? While this one has magnets that keep it closed. This second one also looks thicker and probably weighs more with it's detachable shit. Arggg! And then the MoKo has the stylus holder on the outside which I dislike, but it has a magnetic lock!

Use the SW Decoder (Fast Mode), that's the only way I've got sound and video for mkvs on my Galaxy S+.

At Google I/O, they announced encrypted apps that require a device-specific key when downloaded from the store. Once devs start using that (not sure what version of android is required for it--either 2.3 or 4.0+), you can bet piracy is going to be cut down quite a bit.

There's way too much personal and important shit on my device for me to fuck around with pirated apps just to save a few bucks.

Yeah, I'm holding off buying a case for now. The backing is so nice that I don't even really need one right away.

Presumably, Google and ASUS will release a Smart Cover ripoff, since it already has built-in magnet detectors. I'm sure that will get Apple lawyers frothing at the mouth.

I seem to be getting a small amount of flickering on lower brightness settings.

Is this to be expected, for some reason?

EDIT: I think it might be the automatic brightness.

I saw this post and went right to Google Play to download it, but the tablet build isn't on Play and the one that is up there isn't compatible with the N7. :'(

Got the tablet in hand yesterday, everything was going great but then I learned a lot about Android. Like how a lot of apps in the marketplace just straight up don't work. Game Dev Story works if you get the trial version but the full version won't even load. And Grand Prix Story is a visual mess, but I can't refund it so I'm stuck with it.

At least the Osmos tablet version I got from a Humble Bundle works, it never worked on the Kindle Fire.

Oh well, it couldn't be too perfect. At $200 there has to be a catch. I just wouldn't have guessed that the catch would be how many apps on the play store are so poorly maintained. Makes me feel happy when I go back to my WP7 where everything just works (tm).

Yep, I was wondering this myself. I read on XDA forums that if the sensor doesn't pick up the light exactly, the screen can flicker. I haven't had this yet myself, but I also turned auto brightness off.
