Kotaku Rumor: Final Fantasy Versus XIII dead?

I'm pretty dubious that this is true, but even if it IS true, I don't know how people can possibly be so upset about it, considering that 6 years after it's announcement we still barely know anything about the actual game.

The concept enticed those (especially branding it's avatar) to the point of waiting for any info each year since it's initial announcement. The anger expressed for it's cancellation would and should be far greater than how SE has been dealing the flow of information for this.

Was 13-2 so good that 13-3 is an absolute? I left so uninterested in FF13 that I was shocked with Square Enix decided on doing a 13-2.

It was an improvement over XIII but it still had a pretentious and convoluted story with two unlikeable main characters. It had towns with side quests though lol

This must be a brilliant plan to make stock prices fall, thus forcing them to respond and give us a new trailer.

It was their plan all along, a conspiracy between video game journalists to force SE to show something FFVXIII related to fill up this slow gaming related news day.

Every time I hit my refresh button I keep hoping this is just a rumor. This news really zipped out of nowhere. Square must be really tightening their belt loops.

It was the same shit as XIII, a little more variety in the gameplay, but way easier, same shitty story and two (only playable) character. They left with a cliffhanger, so people want to see it end. It saddens me that people are looking forward to Toriyama stories.

What?

If you mean his "buy a SE game" statement: think of it what you want.
But I understand that he likes the song - because I'm listening to it for 6 years, too. It#s great music, man.

Yeah, I'm referring to his statement. Claiming that you are going to refuse to purchase any product a company puts out in the future because they cancelled a game that we knew very little about BUT HAD THIS ONE MUSIC TRACK RELEASED THAT WAS AWESOME is ridiculous.

So it was officially cancelled but there's no official statement huh?
Okok nitpicking semantics again. In the end it wouldn't be that surprising now would it.

Man Square (and a whole slew of other j-devs ) really were in over their heads on this HD thing. I really really hope they can work things out. Especially jRPGs suffered enormously, not even a Persona out yet *shakes fist at Atlus*

If anyone but Kotaku this would worry me.

I hate Kotaku as much as the next guy but since they have a japanese page they're pretty well clued in on what's going on in robotto land.

No way. SE butchered FF XII to release it, they'll do the same with this if necessary. There's no chance they'll just up and cancel it.

To balance out Kagari's post - There was new (ie, not in a previously released trailer) footage of the game internally at SE back in February. Since then though I have heard nothing, which makes me think the branches of SE I'm in contact with have heard nothing, too. That said, that wouldn't be the longest period of radio silence we/they've had on this game.

Flip side - if this happened weeks ago, wouldn't they have culled 'Somnus' from Theatrhythm DLC for the West at last minute?

I will say this - I think Versus is viewed as a failure of a project; we've all seen and heard Wada's comments about XIII and XIII-2 and faster development cycles and a new FF every other year - the budget, length of development and depth of what we've seen of Versus is pretty damning, I think. I don't think they'll make a game like this ever again if it gets released or not.

Something worth doing for every rumour is to look at the information provided and ask yourself who would be likely to have all of that information in one place:

My source is an employee who works at ____________ (company name) ______ (regional branch). I believe they would have access to this information because their job, ____________ (job name), requires access to information about in development titles not yet ready to reach the market. Additionally, I believe that they'd have access to the reason behind not formally announcing a cancellation ("stock prices") because their position is meaningfully connected to P&L or business development stuff. Additionally, I believe that their situation puts them in frequent enough contact with developers in Japan at Square Enix that they would be able to accurately report the exact mood on the team after the announcement.

What reason would Square have to cancel this? I doubt they would have any worries about releasing the game because its no good.

Maybe its too progressive for Square's liking. Non-randomised battles, open areas and HD towns.

Id further believe a rumor about iran loving the jews, than a rumor from kotaku no offense, but this comes off as real tabloidish journalism designed to get ff fans in a frenzy for hits. Thats how this comes off

The very first thing I thought was that someone invented the rumor with the intention to create buzz to force Square into finally saying something about the game. Then I saw some evidence for it when the article was all like, "Yeah guys if they don't say anything about it at TGS it's done, sell your stocks!"

But then Kotaku.

Wow Shitaku once again becomes desperate for hits.

I don't care for Versus anymore but i'm sure some people still working on it in some shadowy corner of SE offices.

I have been rocking this avatar for too many years for the game to not be released. I know it's coming, I can feel it.

Versus XIII was already dead to most reasonable people
When the game gets close to or is released I will bring this quote up. Just to see what you have to say then.

Fucking hell if this is true. It looked like their most promising game in a decade.
I find it hard to believe though, six years in development and then flushing all that money and work down the drain? Makes no sense, especially since VXIII is their most anticipated title.

Watch it be the lowest selling FF this gen, on a single console and likely launching after at least one of the next gen machines has launched! That's one major reason this game has a problem.

While I don't believe this rumor, I certainly wouldn't discount it due to it not making sense on SE's end. They are so incredibly out-of-touch that it's not even fun to talk about anymore.

Goes against information I was told quite recently, which was that Nomura is hard at work on the game and something of it will be shown at TGS.

So? They did say it recently got cancelled. Is Nomura even capable of stopping SE from cancelling something?

The opportunity cost of not doing a console KH3 is pretty big. Nobody probably cares about kh now but in 2007-2009 I bet that would have sold a lot. Not that it wouldn't now. I dunno.

I'd rather have trico...

I think it will sell better than XIII-2 by default. Exclusive or not.
It'll be hard not to sell better than 13-2, but that still doesn't mean it recoups the investment.

Should be expecting a Versus 13-2, except headed by a different director since Nomura will probably back out if they ask a sequel of him.

I don't see it getting cancelled. The gameplay trailer showed various gameplay elements. They would NOT cancel it to do that all over again in another game.

However, the "Versus" name has to be dead. It surely has to be FFXV now.

If this was going to be cancelled then it would have happened before it went into production, during the CG trailer stage, not now.

My main problem at this point isn't Versus not being released, it's the constant non-answers to questions asking directly why Versus isn't out yet, or what's going on.

"We have no information right now.", is not acceptable. Come outright and state the facts, every single mention of this game to results in Nomura and Square being consistently nebulous, and it's really off putting.

At least KH3 didn't get announced and then not deliver. I'm still holding that there is a possibility the reason it was cancelled is because it wasn't getting anywhere and they've been working on KH3 instead.

A guy can dream

Theatrhythm including the Versus XIII song in it tells me they never ever have intentions of cancelling this game. This is Nomura's baby.

Kotaku looking for hits.

If there is even the slightest news regarding Versus in the upcoming months i think we should finally ban them.

I don't think the track in Theatrhythm means anything, but I also don't think it's canned. They can clearly finish it when they want to. It's a question of resources above anything else. At the most PS3 will be viable for another three years, they still actually have a long time to finish it.

My wild guess is they'll get FFXIV 2.0 out the door, support it then once that settles down they'll announce FFXV.

Versus always looked and felt like a mainline game anyway.
