Naughty Dog changes their tune on Uncharted 3's Season Pass, upcoming DLC costs extra

So, Uncharted 3 has/had their own version of season pass called Fortune Hunters Club:

http://www.naughtydog.com/site/post/new_uncharted_3_dlc_fortune_hunters_club_grows/

Initially, the Fortune Hunters’ Club offered a total savings of 45% off the seven multiplayer packs (three character skin packs, four map packs) that will be released for Uncharted 3. We’ve kicked this deal up a few notches and are now offering 14 total packs, 7 new packs that we will be revealing as the year progresses! As a FHC member the savings for these 14 packs will be over 60%! Current membership and any new membership purchased will include all currently available and any upcoming DLC packs for Uncharted 3 as well as an exclusive Fortune Hunters' Club theme that will let you know when new Uncharted 3 DLC hits right from the XMB of your PS3.

any upcoming DLC packs for Uncharted 3

That's from January.

This is what they recently posted about an upcoming update and upcoming DLC:

4. Will we see more map packs/character packs, and if so, will FHC members get a discount? (Trick_2092)

More DLC is coming but it’s not map packs. The FHC program is over so there will be no discount. However, all upcoming DLC is reasonably priced and will grant some very cool things that customize your character.

I'm sure they will spin it somehow(or not give a shit) but god I can never trust another word Naughty Dog says.

edit: Per Arne's request, in March Naughty Dog clarified that the FHC would be ending.

Well are they now beyond their "14 total packs" that they stated earlier in your quote?

That's why you don't buy stuff sight unseen.

If they're content charging money for it, they need to outline exactly what is included.

I remember it used to be a certain number of DLC, then it was everything, and now we're back to the first one?

Anti-DLC thread GO.

If anything it should be an anti-season pass thread. DLC can be fine, I don't think there's been more than 1 actual worthwhile season pass (walking dead's). It's a ridiculous concept in most cases too. Pay the ever trustworthy major publishers money ahead of time and pray they make decent content.

I usually don't bother with DLC, but hearing this is kind of lame. I got some of the dlc for Uncharted 2, but I never really completed all of it. Uncharted 3 was awesome but it didn't have me playing it as much after clearing it on crushing, the multiplayer just didn't hold me as much.

Should have clarified it's DLC MAP PACKS and not just DLC PACKS.

I read that as any of the upcoming packs of the previously mentioned 14. So can you answer my question or do you not know the answer? I'm not asking for anything more or less... which for some reason you didn't understand with your reply.

You should never EVER buy anything based on a promise. Never. You're just asking for disappointment. Sure it doesn't always go bad but it's never worth the risk.

Especially if you buy something expecting it to be fixed later.

Doesn't "upcoming" mean something? I don't know, it seems pretty clear that this was supposed to be set for a certain period of time, even with the exact number of DLC items being outlined.

Overrated mediocre dev tries to screw people with their DLC? How unbelievable.

The 14 "packs" are over, I don't see how it matters. Do you want me quote them again?

Oh and by the by. Of their 4 map packs, 2 packs were redone maps from Uncharted 2, 1 alleged map pack was a single co-op mission that entirely reused assets from Uncharted 1, and the final "map pack" had finally four new maps. Best season pass ever.

Naughty Dog will issue a statement saying there is nothing wrong with their season pass promise, before consulting with the NeoGAF community and changing the wording on their DLC pricing and offering a discount, while maintaining there was nothing wrong in the first place.

Ok, so at the time of this:

There were 14 already. Then 7 'upcoming' packs?

This looks like 21 packs to me. Were they not included?

charging for multi-player maps is a crappy trend in gaming... Especially in a game that's so dependent on it (multiplayer).

They should have a pretty good idea of what it is they're going to add as DLC way ahead of time. Why not just tell people what to expect?

This is so shady.

Ah Naughty Dog, never cease to amaze.

When I booted up Uncharted 3 multiplayer earlier this month I couldn't wait to use Flynn. To my surprise, he, as well as every other villain worth using was DLC.

Infinity Ward got so much shit for including one remake into their map packs, and to see some people defend Naughty Dog is just insane. Almost all of the DLC is just reskinned stuff from other Uncharted games.

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if The Last of Us had it's ending held back as DLC.

So it would seem they've met their end of the deal the promised. Unfortunately, their wording could come back to bite them in the ass. The first could, I would read as:

Initially, the Fortune Hunters’ Club offered a total savings of 45% off the seven multiplayer packs (three character skin packs, four map packs) that will be released for Uncharted 3. We’ve kicked this deal up a few notches and are now offering 14 total packs, 7 new packs that we will be revealing as the year progresses! Now, I will grant you they obviously did not say this and can thus be misconstrued and lead into people buying this with hopes that it was to be taken literally. However, I don't think that's how they meant it and will result in something like "Sorry we didn't say that explicitly, but this is how we meant it."

So that's why I think it matters, but it doesn't seem like you're too interested in other opinions.

You're right TommyT, I'm not interested in apologists.

The 21 packs mentioned here were not given to people who subscribed?

Uh no? You are reading it wrong anyway, it's not 21 packs. It was 14 "packs" total, and they had only released some by the time they upgraded their season pass to include "all upcoming DLC packs" as they put it.

What has happened here, I believe, is that internally they had only planned for the currently released DLC, they weren't going to release any more. So now that they feel like gouging people out of more of their money, they've gone back on their word.

Oh, I see now.

All of the current (7) and any upcoming (7). Poorly worded indeed.

So now that they feel like gouging people out of more of their money, they've gone back on their word.
I believe "upcoming" means something that is already planned and is coming soon. If there is wrongdoing here, it would be that they intentionally worded this in a way that wasn't completely clear. The upcoming part defines it as those 7 packs that they hadn't revealed yet, but just told you about.

By the way, I hate season passes and have never bought one.

I love how a single siege map was considered a "map pack". The FHC was a terrible waste of money. Never again naughty dog, never again!

Wario64

works for Gamestop (lol)
Yup, poorly worded. Even if it was worded correctly, it just makes season passes an unattractive set of package (like we didn't know this already)

Most of the content in the season pass was mostly Uncharted 2 content too, right? Now that they have new content, you have to pay for it separately...

Papercuts

fired zero bullets in the orphanage.
Yeah, the entire way they handled DLC in UC3 was amazingly shitty. The whole MP of that game was a mess to me from the start, so this constant trickle is the gift that keeps on giving.

Killthee

helped a brotha out on multiple separate occasions!
The FHC left a sour taste in my mouth. I thought it was a safe buy considering U2's awesome map packs, but I guess I should have known better when they launched U3 with U2 skins I had already purchased as U3 DLC and counted avatar packs as FHC DLC pack. Never buying another season pass without fully knowing what the dev's plans are beforehand.

You can make excuses and guess at their reasoning all you want, but what matters is that any reasonable person who read

"Current membership and any new membership purchased will include all currently available and any upcoming DLC packs for Uncharted 3."

would be expecting all future DLC packs as part of the value in their purchasing decision. The 14 packs mentioned in the post is only telling the consumer how many packs have been announced. Really bad form if they don't honor this deal

Lord Error

Insane For Sony
That to me seems like they promised total 14 packs, so when that was written, you'd download whatever was there, and the upcoming stuff to fill up the 14.

Noone ever promises to give you literally everything they'd make in the future wording it like that. While unclear wording, I see this more as a pricing mistake that Amazon sometimes does, and then goes back and cancels order for people who tried to take advantage of said mistake.

Doesn't support Move. Doesn't support Vita. Doesn't even support their own DLC package. Truly industry leaders everyone else should hope to follow.

Meh, doesn't really affect me. I bought the FHC pass and enjoyed all of the content. If they are releasing new content that goes past this, I'll make the decision to pay or not pay. This isn't some difficult choice where not buying it renders your game useless or something. Don't really see what the problem is.

The DLC for Uncharted 3 was extremely disappointing anyway. Character skins and redone maps really shouldn't be taking up a large chunk of a season pass people buy - Not only that but it all felt rushed, lazy and worst of all lacking in the trophies department.

This. I think it's great that Sony lets their devs do their own thing, but come on. The Vita needs more stuff to really make it shine. Something from ND would do that, instead they made another PS3 game (which I do want), but I want something from them on the Vita.
