That last tweet he sent in the OT is so lame. Lame comeback. Wonder what he'd say if I asked him if he's just salty his games have been flops lol

What does that have to do with anything? People keep saying his games are flops as if they wanted him to create ripoffs as well. The salty are the ones that don't want to admit that what he said is only his honest opinion.
 
Indeed. Everybody admits the inspiration came from Smash, but Zelda has spawned tons of games that obviously got inspiration from Zelda, including Okami, and yet get praised. This game gets mocked for it.

Well the resemblance to super smash brothers is glaring. Anyone can look at a screenshot of psasbr and see it's a 2d mascot fighter and make the connection that it is like ssb. No one can tell okami is similar to zelda without playing it.

I don't see the comparison between Zelda and Okami apart from both of them being adventure games where you progressively get skills. You just need to see a picture comparison between Smash and PSABR to know that it's a ripoff.
If you have a very simplistic idea of how video games work.

PS All-Stars was inspired by SSB in the fact that it's an accessible mascot fighting game. Pulling characters from different games requires a universal art style.

The games play very differently from one another. The biggest similarities are the fact that it's cartoony-looking and there are items. Beyond that they are not so similar.

You don't think intent counts for anything? "I'm going to create a game mechanically inspired by this other game," versus, "We're going to leverage the popularity of our corporate mascots in the same exact manner as our competitors." And, on the other hand, my hands-on time with the game has shown to me that they've done a pretty poor job of that, not understanding what makes Smash Bros so endearing, while simultaneously putting out a game that simply doesn't feel as good to play (again, to me).

Maybe because Smashbros is somewhat unique, at least in the mainstream, compared to 3rd person fantasy adventures?

Noone would care if a game "borrowed" from CoD or generic FPS #65, but if anyone made a fps-quantum-spacehole-puzzler, eyerows would be raised and everyone would call it a portal rippoff.

You really don't see the how the dungeon/overworld dynamic, the fighting system, the dishing out of new abilities, using that new ability to solve dungeon puzzles and defeat bosses, the overworld opening up as you gain new abilities, the destruction of the scenery to gain little collectables, the set up of the towns, the Navi character.

Man I don't know how you can't see the zelda influence on that game.

Oh but the artstyle is different so its ok.

My definition of a rip-off is a quick cash-in on something popular. Sony could have done this years ago when smash was huge.

This game coming at the end of Sony's 3rd generation lifecycle is more of a fan and game appreciation than trying to capitalize on Nintendo's new hit. SMH

There's a difference between "influence" and "rip-off" though.

Still, All Stars was inevitable and I'm surprised it's taken this long.

I didn't like Okami much, I found it badly paced and boring, but I wouldn't call it a Zelda rip off, just a game heavily inspired by it. The combat in Okami has completely different mechanics to any Zelda thanks to the brush, the world (the most important part since these games are all about exploring that) art and story don't resemble Zelda at all and their main common aspect is that they're both action adventures with light puzzle solving. I don't think most puzzles had been in a Zelda game before either, though there have been so many there are probably some similarities in places. Changing the art and some mechanics in a fighting game still leaves it distinctly similar in comparison, considering sequels do the same as it's about all they can do to differ. Building an awesome huge world to explore with appropriate challenges within is kind of a whole different level of creation, to be called a rip off in that case you'd need to steal the actual world design and challenges, even if you skinned it differently (by the way, I don't think any of the so called Zelda-likes are really much like Zelda, including Darksiders which I thought is more like DMC and Beyond Good and Evil which had way too many differences to list, Zelda remains distinctly original outside its own lesser sequels). I mean, nobody called Little Big Planet a Super Mario Bros. rip off just because it's in the same genre, it clearly was nothing like it. This game doesn't get the same treatment by the same people for a reason. Perhaps after the release some of them will change mind.

It also has grass and clouds, just like a Zelda game.

It's a huge ripoff.
Doesn't mean it can't be fun though. I think SSB is a godlike franchise, but if Sony wants to experiment with the formula, they can. Hell, if it turns out good, I'll grab it.

Yeah, but why? At one point Gears of War, Zelda, Mario, Mario Kart, Street Fighter were all unique. What makes Smash Bros the one sacred horse?

Of course the art being vastly different helps. The physics, camera system, controls and more bring different also help it. The same can not be said for battle royale.

even though smash bros got beaten in the conept by at least one other game; it is the one who brought it into the mainstream.
sony clearly does it for the sales and because it's a good idea for a game, it's not a very wrong thing to do.. but neither is calling a rip-off.
kamiya is right, just give us something new and unique and expand that, damn it.

He's blasting a game and company for merely existing basically. Calling the game a ripoff is really unfair. Besides, this game is coming out in 2012. The first Smash Bros came out in what, 1999 or 2000? I cant remember, but it's not like Sony stole this concept as soon as Nintendo created their game. There's nothing wrong with borrowing ideas, especially when the creators added their own ideas and spin on it.

Basically he has no business opening his mouth. He's probably mad this game will sell more than any game he's ever created. He looks extremely unprofessional and very childish in his tweets. Like most salty game creators do usually.

Who gives a monkey's butt whether PABR is a rip-off or not? Go look at the beta thread and u'll see many positive impressions. And from a fighting game perspective, that game is completely different than Smash. Sony might do good to the FGC more than Nintendo would.
i hope, that the tekken team will improve ssb/sbbm to the next level
 
Because he did the same thing with Okami. And you bring it to the next level when you call it "morally wrong". That goes beyond just an opinion of not caring for something.

i think it has to do with his own perception. many concepts from zelda have seeped into general game design over the years, whereas Smash Bros. remains essentially the only game in town. is he wrong when calls it 'morally wrong"? yeah, but i can see how he got there

I agree, but you can make the exact same type of distinctions about PSAS. Its because its inspired by it, not straight up copying it. I really enjoyed Okami better than any recent Zelda game, but you have to admit Okami was clearly inspired by Zelda.

So who in the game is a character that nobody has ever heard of then?
I dunno any of the follow characters! Who are what the heck are:

Big Daddy
Cole MacGrath
Colonel Radec
Fat Princess
Toro

Assuming I didn't find the full roster, but from the list I quickly looked up these characters are all ?'s to me! And Nathan Drake I only know through the endless amount of Uncharted threads posted on GAF with his name on 'em (and I think I played the original UC demo loooong ago, very unmemorable). Also PS3 is my only console this generation... so idk, maybe these no-names are from ancient one-off PS1 games?

Ok fine, what makes a zelda clone, because everything I discribed is what i would discribe to call Darksiders a zelda clone, and everyone seems to admit that that game is a zelda clone. Just change the brush powers with item powers and the artstyle and you totally have a zelda game.

Really I don't ever remember this being a a point of contention in other topics even when people were arguing if Twilight Princess or Okami was the better "Zelda game" back in the day.
 
Let's not play dumb here and say it's just about art style or certain gameplay mechanics. It's about console manufacturer making a wankery fighting game using their beloved mascot characters (liberal use of the word, especially when talking about Sony). After that similarities are just eerie.

And doing that is certainly something you're allowed to do. But I can see some people disagreeing with it.
 
Everyone already knows its a rip-off. I'm more interested to see how it does sales-wise once it's released. I hope it bombs, but I think it will probably do alright.

Mortal Kombat is a ripoff of SF. Everybody boycott MK.

DOA/Tekken is a ripoff of VF. Buy VF5 and boycott DOA5 and Tekken Tag 2.
I agree, MK is terrible. I'm not the biggest SF fan but I'd suggest that over it!
Also everyone needs to buy VF5.
