Hideki Kamiya on PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale: "It's just a ripoff."

I knew someone over at platinum hated Sony. Its the only reason why I can think of to explain why baynoetta on ps3 is the most shit port I've ever seen in my life. (it was absolutely ridiculous)

This guy is probably mad that they are using new Dante in PlayStation all-stars in stead of the old one.

Big Daddy - Most well-recognized icon from a multi-million selling franchise.
Cole - Protagonist of a multi-million selling franchise.
Radec - Villain of the best-selling installment of a multi-million selling franchise.
Fat Princess - Star of the PSN hit of the same name.
Toro - Japanese mascot of the Playstation brand. VERY well known over there.

Needless to say, lots of people out there have heard of these characters.

Lotsa people may have but I never did! I know thats not the same as not one single person ever not knowing about 'em but still. The more ya know! Except I still kinda don't know cause ya just said "franchise" for each instead of listing the game names!

Well, funny reactons.

Nintendo fans are the most rabid fanboys eh? This thread tells a different story.

Gotta love Kamyia lol

Smash 4 vs PSABR comparisons will be interesting once Smash 4 gets unveiled.

Fanboys are generally like that. You should see Apple GAF :p

In general, most people who tried the beta probably already made up their mind that they're going to buy it anyway.

This.

I wonder what Kamiya thought of Dreammix TV...

He'd probably say it's crap (and it is, but what an awesome crap it is)

I mean, thats the only game where you can fight Optimus Prime with Snake and Bomberman.

Who gives a monkey's butt whether PABR is a rip-off or not? Go look at the beta thread and u'll see many positive impressions. And from a fighting game perspective, that game is completely different than Smash. Sony might do good to the FGC more than Nintendo would.

I was surprised it took 7 pages for the "FGC" comment to pop out.

Revengeance looking like flashy flashy. Getting a femme fatale of nice curves for bayonetta.

If we were to judge his games from what they look like, I'd assume that it's all flash and no substance.

I think he is not even involved with MGR, and have you played Bayonetta?

Thread is amazing.

If Okami was a Zelda game (especially a 3D Zelda game) I'd of hated it!

I dunno any of the follow characters! Who are what the heck are:

Big Daddy
Cole MacGrath
Colonel Radec
Fat Princess
Toro

Assuming I didn't find the full roster, but from the list I quickly looked up these characters are all ?'s to me! And Nathan Drake I only know through the endless amount of Uncharted threads posted on GAF with his name on 'em (and I think I played the original UC demo loooong ago, very unmemorable). Also PS3 is my only console this generation... so idk, maybe these no-names are from ancient one-off PS1 games?

/:(

I'll reiterate that I have immense respect for Kamiya, I met him and he's a truly amazing guy.

I just don't understand people calling it a rip off. It it was a rip off, it would be a piece by piece copy of SSB, mechanically and aesthetically. It isn't. It plays differently enough to where it feels like its own game. Mechanically the characters play very differently from one another and their attacks just feel better, mechanically, than the ones in SSB.

A problem I had with SSB was that typically I felt like combos felt improvised, the combos in All-Stars actually feel rewarding, that they can be switched around and improved on more. This leads to my second gripe with SSB - everything was too situational and focused on guiding your opponents to the edge and ringing them out. All-Stars is the opposite of that.

Sure it's inspired from SSB as it is a 2.5D mascot brawler, but it definitely does play and feel different. Superbot hasn't tried to deny that All-Stars is inspired by SSB, but I just really dislike the whole "it's a rip off" mentality. It's fun, it has unique things about it, so who cares. People need to stop hating just because it has a chance to be a direct competitor to SSB. I understand a lot of this is because of people denying that it's inspired by SSB, but there's also a lot of people saying it's a rip off, and I think that's not the case at all.

I used to be completely against Dante's Inferno and Darkstalkers purely on principle, but those are pretty fun games in their own right after I played them. They borrow heavily from the source material but they're unique, fun experiences. The same thing can be said of the Castlevania reboot, originally I hated it but it's a really fun, awesome game.

Anyway, that's my final two cents. I've played the beta a lot and I love the game. I'm a veteran of SSB and I love that franchise, All-Stars being a reality is exciting as both a Nintendo and a Sony fan. I hope that it pushes the SSB team to make the next one a true successor to Melee (yeah I'm one of those guys). In the meantime, I'm going to keep playing the beta as I excitedly wait for the full release! Cheers :)

What's up my gaf homeboys!! Interesting twitters, that said I'll meet you guys on the battle arenas this fall. Bring your A Game!

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Can't say I disagree with him... and considering the games he's worked on, he can say whatever the hell he wants, as far as I'm concerned.

At the end of the day for me, its a conceptual rip-off of a game that is one-of-a-kind, and doesn't have many willing competitors with a rostor to make it worth copying. But they seem to have done more than just copy it. They've taken the simple framework and put their own spin on it from the first floor up judging from the changes and impressions, and its basically ignorance to not even give it a chance because it has the audacity to be a 4-player mascot brawler.

It really isn't. You can Say smash bros influenced a genre but then again that would be stretching it because smash brows and power stone were released around two weeks of each others. There have been many other arena fighters since. So the only thing people are really harping on is the mash up aspect of the roster. Knocking on the arena based play would just be a poorly informed opinion.

Bayonetta, Vanquish, plus a plethora of Shooters and Fighters are also conceptual rip offs.

Exactly

I think some people here take video games a bit too seriously.
why are you trying to make it seem like taking games seriously is a bad thing?
hell, why does anyone care about anything anymore?
because every other medium is worth caring for but not games, right?

It's not the same game, it's an evolution of the formula that he created.
A terrible evolution! I mean I still gotta give Bayonetta a "fair" try but from me super easy mode playthrough I hated it. Yet I love DMC super easy playthroughs -_-?

what the hell man. Playing either game on super easy "automatic" mode isn't a fair try at all. You need to play at least on hard

I used the word "franchise" to illustrate the fact that these characters aren't just from one-off games, but actually feature in multiple games and hence have been around for quite a while.

But if you really want to know!...

Big Daddy - Bioshock
Cole MacGrath - inFamous
Colonel Radec - Killzone

From what I played of the game at comic con, he's not wrong. It's not a terrible game by any means but the few unique features felt tacked on and wholly unnecessary. There's a place for game clones but this just feels kinda cheap to me. It's like the Smash Bros eqivalent of store-brand cereal.

We will all forget about this nonsense when the game is out, and maybe a demo is available.

Put the fussy fussy aside and welcome the sexy sexy is what I'm trying to say.

Regardless, it's really fun to hear him speak out against "industry injustices" and the like. Seems like a really genuine dude.

I love when devs give their most honest opinion on other's games, but when it's a comment that criticizes a game (which is worked on the clock by dozens if not hundreds of people), then why mention it?

So? Why make the same game twice and then cry about originality.

Iteration of something you were originally apart of and an idea spawned off emulating what your competitor is doing aren't really the same thing at all though

Right, but to everyone on the outside including the people that probably green lit the idea, it is for all intents and purposes "Sony Smash Bros"

Of course it's going to be different mechanically, the developers are making sure of that. But at the end of the day they've been put to work on making a Sony Smash Brothers. That's how people see it, that's how it will be sold to mass market, that's what the game is.

They're not developing their own original idea and game concept, they're getting as creative as they can be making a safe as hell Sony Mascot crossover game.

That was the entire point. Judging by the looks of it. He said in twitter he has no interest on playing it. So he's judging by looks.

Not necessarily - the point of contest on that post was 'who made what', something which is already visible. That's not the same case on his comment on Sony All Stars.

Then every hack n'slay would be a ripoff....
Comeone these are totally different games and the only thing that is the same is the superior
system which actually is better then nearly every system in that genre.

Anyway go and play the game...

What if Sony Battle Royale is targeting competitive fighting game players and care about competitive play? I mean SSBB kind of said "hey fuck your competitive play, here is tripping". While Sony was at EVO and emphasized competitive play.

That to me says they are branching out for two different demographics

If it's fun why wouldn't you buy it.

Why not indeed, but why buy it when the original is already out and arguably better or identical? This game is only of interest to Playstation 3 only owners that wish they could play something like SSB but don't want to invest in a Nintendo console for just one game. And that's fine. It's still a rip-off though :p

Okami follows a Zelda like progression, but it is not really similar beyond that. The entire artistic influence and how it's used as a gameplay element was a main draw of the game and was wholly unique.

Well, people are saying that PASBR is also not that similar to Smash, that is a unique experience and...

See?

I just don't think Kamiya has the moral high ground in this particular case. Is his opinion, but I totally disagree.

Maybe you should play on something other than Nintendo consoles.

No, its not the same but why is it a distinction I as a consumer should care about when deciding whether I think a game looks fun or not?
