Dust: An Elysian Tail |OT| Become the Storm

A REMINDER ON REVIEWS AND SPOILERS

A lot of reviews are going to contain Dust: AET spoilers. These aren't things like plot, but instead are things that you REALLY don't want to be spoiled. Things that you'll love a thousand times more if you haven't had them ruined for you.

When posting, please use spoiler tags accordingly. It's obviously not going remain unspoiled forever, but the longer we can keep this thread spoiler-free, the more people will get to go into the game fresh.

I'm going to post reviews here as I find them, I will only link to reviews that are safe to read, and will just post the scores of the ones that aren't. If you want to ensure that your Dust: AET experience is as good as it can possibly be on Wednesday, then just read the reviews I link to - if you're not bothered by spoilers, just bear in mind that some people are, and so be careful with what you post!

A good rule of thumb would be that if you read something that makes you go "I didn't know that," then spoiler tag it!

Quoting for the new page!

Currently we have The Indie Game Magazine with 90%, and Destructoid with 8.5. Both spoily. Should be a flood in about 90 minutes!

I will be sat on a bus going to work until midnight GMT :( plenty of reading for me when I get back I guess.

Good thing about working evenings is that on wednesday I can spend from 11 to 4pm playing dust :D

Thanks for keeping up with all this. I'm looking forward to reading some non-spoilery reviews soon!

I hope there's actually going to be some non-spoilery reviews! I don't understand how someone can play a game and think "wow, I didn't see that coming!" and then proceed to just write all about it so that nobody else has a chance to experience it the way that they did.

Raging Spaniard

If they are Dutch, upright and breathing they are more racist than your favorite player
Basically a discussion on whether the game is 'furry' or not.

Which shitted up about 4 pages.

Ah, well, sorry, didnt mean to shit up the thread. It was just my opinion.

I hang out with enough furries to know what is and what isnt, I dont mean to judge though, just aint my cup of tea as far as character deisgn goes. (Blacksad being the exception)

Buying this regardless though, the amount of quality work here is stunning.

Wanna hear a good joke? Waste your time helping me! LOL!
I'd be willing to give the game a positive review for Noogy is he gave me the game for free or gave me some Microsoft points.

Character design (whether you love it or hate it) is just one part of the game. Buy it and play it because it's a good game, which it is, not because it shares similarities to a certain fandom. Support that it's a rare example of creative vision, freedom, and skill, so others may follow by that example. There's a great story to be told here, outside the game in terms of how it was created, and in the game itself. It sets a new paradigm for quality indie game design.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for an eventual PC release, meanwhile!

Yep, to avoid spoilers, I didn't write about the story at all. Just wouldn't be fair.

Not really spoilers at all, but just in case people are averse to reviews:

It's hard to believe that such a content rich, well-polished title could be the product of one man's hard work. Aside from the incredible orchestral soundtrack and savvy voiceovers, creator Dean Dodrill is responsible for every aspect of Dust. Sure, the RPG elements could have been stronger, and the boss battles are a bit of a letdown, but if those are the worst things about your game, you're in pretty good shape. An Elysian Tail is a rare example of artisanal game craft. Conventional wisdom says that can't happen anymore, but Dust proves otherwise.

Destructoid's review:

Dust: An Elysian Tail took a long time to reach us, but the wait has most certainly paid off. Few Xbox Live Arcade games are superior, and most of them pale in comparison. At times it can get a touch repetitive, and there are a handful of exasperating moments, but this is nonetheless an arresting game that offers more (and offers it well) than the average XBLA title Yes, it's full of anthropomorphic rabbits and foxes, but if that stops you from playing, that'll be your loss. You'll be missing out on a fine action-platformer, the likes of which we don't see enough of these days.

If anything was worth going furry for, Dust is it.

Final Verdict:
8.5

Congrats on the great reviews noogy! What a week for games this is turning out to be. Can't wait to dive into Dust Wednesday.

So now that my embargo is up, can you answer my question about the amount of items? :p

Your review says plenty, but are we talking "Bastion Plenty" or "SotN Plenty?"

There are probably around 20 of each kind of item. So armours, rings, weapon augments, and pendants. Then there are 42 materials to craft with, and other items such as health restorers, etc.

Your weapon is the same all the way through so you have the same moveset, but how you equip yourself and build your stats will decide whether you're melee or magic based.

Sounds good.

Nah, we established that anything below a 7 is an ironic attention-getter. It's a good thing.

9.5 from OXM:
While Dust: An Elysian Tail doesn’t try to hide its retro influences, the game’s much more whimsical take on old-school gameplay tenets isn’t an attempt to simply recycle the cerebral gymnastics of XBLA’s other 2D history lessons (Fez, Braid). What’s here is an entirely different, though no less surefooted, thrill. Crafted with painstaking attention to inventive detail and charm, Dust is never less than an outright joy to experience.

Reading those now.

Electronic Theatre 9/10

OXM HAS SPOILERS. Venturebeat review is okay for spoilers, it's just a shame that Happy Hearts [sic] stole their entire structure from a game that didn't even come out until after Dust had begun production.

That was one outstanding trailer! Great scores too, congrats Noogy! I still remember when you were posting about it as an xblig title ages ago.

So here’s your chance to visit gaming’s future that might have been with one of the best-looking side-scrollers ever made for 1,200 Microsoft Points (about $15). It’s a triumph of animation and platforming that’s right up there with Michael Ancel’s Rayman Origins, and thrice as impressive given its comparably-nothing design team.

And you know that slightly annoyed, distracted, how-much-longer-is-this-anyway feeling you sometimes get playing games like this? I never felt that once in the 15 hours — 11 on the clock, three or four in retry mode — it took me to finish Dean Dodrill’s magnificent Dust: An Elysian Tail.
This is high praise. Bravo, Noggy.

im glad to see the high review scores, the title always looked amazing when i saw it in trailers, it's nice to hear that it seems to play as well as it looked. I can't wait to pick this up... It might be the first game in a long time I pick up and actually finish without playing other games while playing it (the last one I did that with was Valkyria chronicles when I played it in 2009 ><:)

No matter if I waited 3 years or a few months, the last week prior to the release of a game I'm very hyped about feels eternal and it's the most nerve-wracking compared to the rest. And I'm going to have to experience this TWICE this month. (this game and Project Diva f end of the month) My poor heart.

Yeah, that's what I'm trying to avoid spoiling :(

There's no real point of no return, you can go back from the last save point and do everything, even after you beat the game (it doesn't save a clear file).
