NPD July 2012 Sales Results [Up3: 3DS Hardware Correction - 124K+]

Given a $257 ASP of the Vita, and figuring for 47k total Vita sales, with the Wifi at $250 and the 3G at $300, that would put the split at about:
Wifi: 38.5k
3G: 8.5K

Yeah...

But the starter bundle is apparently still available as well.

They both should be sitting at $129 by now.

You're forgetting about Kinect bundle with 360. There should certainly be a 99 dollar gimp model for 360 though. I thought it was estimated to be around 70 something dollars to make a 360....although this may have come from pachter

Which is inflating the price even more. I think Sony has a contract with AT&T though so dropping the 3G Vita is not an option even if they want to. In my opinion, this is just going to be a long ride out until Sony gives up on the thing.

A complete and absolute, (yet untintentional) self-imposed clusterphuck. Sony continue to impress me for all the wrong reasons.

This might be "water under the bridge" now, but even 1 GB of built-in memory would have been sufficient for games to save their data files. It might not be enough for digital downloads, but anyone who's savvy enough to make use of the PlayStation Store for large downloadable games would likely buy a memory card for that purpose anyway.
The Vita has 4GB of Flash Memory Built-In

It's just none of it is available for saving

I would have been fine with them knocking down the specs slightly to accommodate another 4 gigs of internal memory for the users. Those memory cards are highway robbery and (in my opinions) a major issue that probably harms sales. I wonder if eating the cost of an extra 4 gigs, and a slight decrease in memory card sales would have been worth the increased hardware/software sold over time, who knows. Someone said earlier that they don't think the memory card situation is why it's selling poorly, and I agree, but it provides a large barrier to entry for someone that might otherwise purchase the system for the games it does have.

The 3G should be discontinued, and the Wifi Model should be dropped to $199. While this gamescon was nice, in terms of showing more support, I'm seeing a lot of nice one off titles, but nothing that really informs a strategy like Nintendo showed with the 3DS. Given company finances, I guess they'll try to ride out the poor sales for a year, justifying such a tactic by looking at the slow start of the PS3, and if the Vita survives and isn't Dreamcasted (I love the system but this could happen) the next one, if there is one, will be more along the lines of Playstation Mobile/Sony's new Streaming service.

Why don't YOU do the work instead of posting these absolutely idiotic comments about "stealing data"? It is really strange to see these juvenile attacks popping up about another site's numbers (same goes for the idiotic post of user "jvm" below).
If you don't like what other people are trying to do (whether they succeed or fail in your eyes), just leave it at that - or does it bother you so much that "that other site" got the numbers roughly correct (be that just a lucky guess or not)?

No, banned person. It bothered me back in the day because the methodology behind their numbers was obviously bullshit; I'm legitimately curious about how accurate they've become, and if they are accurate, given the suspicious nature of their beginnings I wouldn't be surprised if they were doing something ethically grey or outright illegal to get their data, but I'd be just as happy were I wrong on that particular detail.

You know, it's funny, but the ball is in their court to prove their credibility; you'd think they'd love the exposure that Gaf could bring if they could prove their integrity?

Just looking at absolute value of errors in their HW prediction for July 2012, rounded to nearest 5%. I don't know if they're adjusting from their NA number down to US-only in the data shown, but if not then their numbers get even worse than shown below.

Xbox 360: ~5%
PS3: ~0%
3DS: ~5%
NDS: ~40%
Wii: ~10%
PSV: ~10%
PSP: ~15%

Roughly 15% absolute error in each of the two top software SKUs. Pokemon Conquest is laughably wrong.

Edit: Also, they have MW3 as a top 10 game without Black Ops. Just look at the NPD top 10...

Very interesting, thankyou.

I saw this on GAF ages ago when I was just a lurker.

They clearly use, or at least used to use, the NPD data to shore up their 'rock solid' data.

Looks likely yeah, I guess we got public numbers on the conduit, didn't we? I wonder if they are using the full report to shore up their numbers or are just adjusting based on all publically available sources and fudging the rest.

I still maintain that there numbers have gotten so wide spread that they've probably been doing a lot of unofficial collecting from other trackers with ties to the retailers.

Gamasutra.
Another column today, with some comments on software sales.

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/...the_decline_has_Call_of_Duty_hit_its_peak.php

Three points of interest here, perhaps: NCAA sales down 12% to around 700K (based on last year's figure) with a 1.3:1 ratio between Xbox 360 and PS3, seven titles with 100K or higher in July 2012 (combined SKUs), and LTD sales figures for last three Call of Duty games.

Also, I try to get some focus on Skylanders, since I think we're going to see Activision go all-in on that franchise. As CoD cools down, I think this is where they see their money coming from next, and we know what kind of effort that has meant in the past. I still think one of the console manufacturers should do a Skylanders bundle.

A fight between Nintendo and Microsoft, basically.

IMO this is kinda like watching a house burning, arguing at which corner the fire started. ;)

Sony´s problems are much deeper. They positioned the Vita (with pricing, value proposition and marketing) targeting a small piece of a market that is dwindling before our eyes. If they want to get the device out of a singular corner (enthusiast mobile gaming device), they need to do a hardware revision - make it into a mobile phone and/or a tablet. Thats the only way to bridge the gap and get it its own niche.
It should be alarming for Sony that 3rd parties, despite having the devkits for such a long time now, simply ignoring the device. They´ll only have two chances to get them onboard: moneyhatting and strong hardware sales. The first might not be inviting or even financially feasible. The second wont be achieved by first party software and services alone. Its the hardware revisions that´d open a broader market for the device.

If you wanna talk about crapchartz being laughable, sometimes they accidentally put data out for games that havn't even released yet. (As soon as a game is released (or rather they get the date wrong) (and isn't a huge blockbuster) the site has a programme to give it some figures).

Anyway jvm, how did average price of PS3 jump above 360?

PS3 price is stable, 360 went down.
Feb12 $284 $271
Mar12 $259 $267
Apr12 $325 $262
May12 $287 $271
Jun12 $275 $273
Jul12 $264 $271
(data thx to JVM! :) )

Thanks, very interesting. Do the free 360's with PC affect this? Maybe it's just less Kinect bundles being sold.

Good to see DKCR back in the charts. Did it get the Nintendo Select treatment?

And Steel Diver...hmm. Are people finding it for $10 or something?
