Random question, but does anyone know what Alpha Dreams is up to?

I figured since we're getting a Paper Mario on the 3DS, we won't see one on the Wii U for some time

Mario & Luigi United Bros. for Wii U. It would be cool to see the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi series switch platforms for this generation.

I banish you to hell for that lame joke!

You know, immediately after I made that stupid joke, I looked up Line Attack Heroes again 'cause I couldn't remember what became of it (turns out it was released in 2010 as a WiiWare title in Japan ... huh) and guess what? They both share the "multiple small characters form a shape to attack enemies" mechanic. It's totally in that game as well! I almost couldn't believe it. It looks like a tech demo for P-100!

Line Attack Heroes was developed by Grezzo (they did the Ocarina 3D port and Four Swords Anniversary on the eShop) under Koichi Ishii (creator of the Mana series). Is he friends with Kamiya? Did they hang out and scam through their old games and Kamiya said "hey that looks cool, how about you draw the shape on a touch screen!"

Some gameplay. You can tell it's a slightly more advanced point-and-click CD-ROM adventure type of game (going off that anyway) with lots of scripted and rendered events, that's how they can get away with it. Certainly very easy on the eye though.

No need to artificially downplay the technical achievements of Heavy Rain and Beyond. The way Heavy Rain controls and how it puts you into the character's shoes is pretty fantastic. The VO, writing and story was pretty crappy but on a technical level, those games are pretty remarkable!

I find that disappointing, movie game is what Heavy Rain was and this is looking like it will have the same type of interaction, hopefully it's good though.

So everyone thinks that the next Nintendo Direct is still going to be in August? I really hope so, also, might this ND be the one that will finally announce Japanese support? Man I'm starting to get really excited, Japanese games are the reason I still play videogames, they're just great, especially the handheld games this Gen, some amazing stuff was made. Can't wait, hope it's announced next week and hopefully it's longer than 40 minutes/one hour.

Wants the largest console games publisher to avoid Nintendo's platforms.

Actually the idea is not new at all. Taito's Space Invaders Get Even did this back in 2007/8 on wiiware. A great game, btw, even though its DLC was a bit overprices.

(yes, gaf, a wiiware game from 2007 had mechanics similar to P-100's *and* overpriced DLC - wiiware was from the future!)

Was she the one that posted BS about the Wii U back in the day?
Hmm... well I guess something is something.

Yeah, I've always wondered why she matters. She has been correct in the past, but has also been quite wrong and has vehemently defended herself before the event (like E3) that has proved her wrong.

Meh.

Well, from what I've just seen in some youtube videos, the mechanic is a very basic version of that. You surround your UFO with the space invaders and "shoot" them towards objects or enemies without much variation. Line Attack Heroes forms a sword-like or spear-like shapes out of the characters you "collected" by defeating small enemies beforehand. It's a lot more similar to what P-100 is doing.

I would call Space Invaders Get Even more of a spin on the classic Shmup formula with a slower pace.

I wasn't really downplaying it but I don't really see it as an achievement either. It's like how some 2D/3D scrolling space shooters have amazing detailed backgrounds, but it's not like the hardware resources are doing much of anything else, so of course they can send it in other directions.

Star Beast?, That's sounds interesting.

What exactly makes you think it sounds interesting, when all you've got is a name, composed of two of the most cliché sounding words in videogame history. Is it the "Star" or is it the "Beast" or is it really the combination that makes it sound interesting? lol

The impressive thing about Heavy Rain, aside from the strong visuals, was that the controls were designed to really draw you into the action you're performing. You had fully analog movements if, for example, your character wanted to go through a door, you'd approach the door and then the right stick would take over the right arm and you would have analog control over the speed of the arm motion towards the doorknob. It doesn't come across in videos but this feeling was essential to the game. The game managed to make you feel like you were actually controlling a movie and making directorial decisions all the time.

If they had bothered with a decent story and better writing (David Cage has commendable aspirations but his abilities as a writer aren't what they should be, sadly) and thrown in voice actors without thick accents, the whole package would've been a lot better. The latter will, at least partially, be redeemed in Beyond with Ellen Page "performing" as the main character (though apparently side characters are voiced by French people and Canadians again going by E3 impressions).

Don't dismiss these games without playing them. Heavy Rain (and their previous title, Fahrenheit [a.k.a. Indigo Prophecy]) has had a lot of problems but it's still a quite an achievement in terms of design and tech.

You know what kinda annoys me?, when people say "I'll buy Wii U just for Nintendo games", that's the claim some devs say where "Nintendo fans only buy Nintendo games", buying only Nintendo games does not help.

I'm not in the business of helping.

I want to play good games. If a good exclusive or definitive game comes along for the Wii U, I'll buy it.

Otherwise I'll have all the other systems and a PC, so I won't really care about third party stuff so much.

Yeah but lets say if you have a Wii U and a PS3/Xbox 360 and there's a multiplat would you buy it on the Wii U or PS3/360?.

I'll buy the version that's the best or has the most content.

If that's the Wii U version: Great. I love supporting Nintendo, but my needs come first.

Star Beast, eh? Wonder if it has anything to do with the book.

Star Beast was also the name of the story that eventually became the movie Alien.

Give yourself a cookie if you can name the title of the cult classic movie [without using the googles] which the co-writer of Star Beast worked on/in that Star Beast was supposed to be a horror version of.

Horribly phrased but it's 1 am here so give me a break!

Who Goes There?

It's just a rendered cutscene.
It's real time.

Don't forget that there is a physic engine and some AI (deactivated for demo purposes) in place. You can push around objects the entire street, that isn't scripted. You can also kill people with almost any object, there is some sort of ragdoll implemented.

Is this real time?, because if it is I can't wait to see better looking games on the Wii U, that looks amazing on the PS3.

We might be waiting a while. That's an exclusive PS3 game and exclusives on systems always look the best. Thing is I don't think we'll ever get anything out of Nintendo that looks like this because it goes against their design style. We'd have to wait for Nintendo to be willing to fund development of a exclusive but not dictate the content of the game. Just supply the money and let the developer do what they want.

I've no answer to your question, but since I just read it yesterday (going through my Cracked backlog), I present to you the peripherally related 5 Famous Movies That Shamelessly Ripped Off Obscure Ones, which includes the film being discussed.
