Dust: An Elysian Tail |OT| Become the Storm

Glad to hear it :) Always warms my heart when someone mentions games from that era, because you would have had to be a gamer during that generation to really 'get it'. There was a very different mood in gaming and on television that I honestly think most younger gamers are completely oblivious to. I feel that a certain amount of innocence has been lost.

Yeah, everything changed so much in the overall world since then... I loved the "vaccum" I was in back then; I formed opinions on games by what I saw, even though I purchased magazines like crazy then. There are SO many cynical moods and outlooks that I wasn't aware of then.

Growing up in a world that has put so much negative spin on aspects of games, aspects that I genuinely love (such as real difficulty, "broken" items for dedicated players, non-humanoid characters, artstyles, etc, etc...) would probably have forced me to view games totally differently...

It was great to discover games on your own. It was great to meet foreign story and character conventions, because they felt like nothing you'd see anywhere else.

I really hope some modern youth can have such pure experiences with your game! You've shared a vision of gaming with this game of yours, and I could see it causing even younger people to look for something similiar, which opens a pretty big gateway towards the past... "I got into Saturn games, because the vids I saw on youtube reminded me of all the fun I had playing DUST!"

I just read this. It's so true. It's bizarre how certain games capture the spirit of a particular era (like, I recently played the original Shadow Hearts and found it to have the soul of a PSX RPG).

Plus I'm a sucker for hanboks and kimbap, so it's hard not to love.

I love the fact that it shows the major conventions of those eras don't need to go anywhere.

It's also almost like sharing drinks and a nice conversation with an old, dear friend; everything feels just as lively and real as the first time you experienced it. A pleasant experience all around!

I have a late game question

I am at the volcano area, I am supposed to power up this machine but I don't think I have the right fidget power up. I think it's an electricity power up. Where do I get it?

The Electric Fidget power is gotten just after you beat "The Lady", in order to restore water to the village. After walking past where you fight her, to screen left, there's a big orb floating at the top, over the exit warp. That gives Fidget the lightning ability.

*Edit: Haha, glad to see you found it!

Finished the game today, and overall it was pretty damn good. Got 117% too.

29/30 achievements in my play through. Not a fan of the achievements you can only get one or the other per game unless you know it's coming and save before hand. Other than that great game.

Greatly enjoying the game, holy shit.

Stuck in Abadis Forest, I get past the area where you find
Bandage Girl
and I get to the scene with the fire and yellow gates. Any ideas?

This game is pretty close to perfect for me. Just hit ch.4. It's a really hard game to put down, played hours on end today. It's 3 am, can't remember the last game that was this addictive.

Don't have much reason to bust out the 360 these days (though I have been more than usual thanks to a dead PS3 and the wait for the new model)...
But holy fucking shit, this game is GREAT.

Probably one of the best $15 spends you'll find on XBLA.

Still stuck on Blackmoor Mountain for one last thing about The Cliff, nothing shows on my map for unventured areas for circled treasures.

Got every other place 100%.

Got chills at the ending, though.

EDIT: OH DUH the hourglass!
That was a really well-done Braid section although the little rabbit should have been affected by the time too :p

So yeah, got over 3 and a half hours clocked now and I really really like it. It's the kind I've been making myself stop playing because I know I'd spend the whole day playing it.

Regarding the last thing in Blackmoor Mountain, if you have
the red orb
in your inventory you should try
going to a dead end on the far left of the mountain near the top. IIRC, The Cliff is the right note to look at, but I don't remember exactly.
I don't want to give anything else away so I hope that helps. :)

You can pull exploding fruit across screens.

Looks like the bandwidth is exceeded on noggy com and elysiantail com

Is there another place I can go to get assets?

I apologize for the site downtime, I'm actually doing most of my updates on Facebook now: http://www.facebook.com/DustAnElysianTail

I do have a small presskit here: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/34364049/presskit.zip
And there is a link to the launch trailer download in the OT. Thanks!

And thank you everyone for the kind comments, I'm really happy that you are enjoying the game!

Just finished it, about 18 hours total as I like to take my time and look around in metroidvanias.

Amazing from start to end, the ending was more moving then I expected and I enjoyed the drawn cut scenes where they were used.

Dean I hope this game pays you back in a good way after all that time spent on making it, easily in my top five 360 game list no questions asked.

I adore the inventory menus and overall interface in this game, they are bursting with the same love and care of the other aspects of the game, so beautiful, yet clear and efficient. Love those little chimes as you navigate. What a game, there's not enough possible praise for Noogy.

I do have to give credit to my sound guy, Chris Geehan :) I basically said "all this UI needs to have the satisfaction of a Nintendo game". We really worked hard on all that stuff, but he of course made the actual sounds.

In fact that was sort of a late addition, as all the UI sounded VERY different about 6 months ago. It sounded more like your average game, which dare I say was a little dull? It wasn't until I really sat down and studied a ton of UI when I realized no one does it better than Nintendo. Simply pressing 'start to begin' makes you feel like a champion.

Am I missing an ability to get this? It's a key in the Cirromon Caverns covered from the top, right, and left with the bottom uncovered, but I can't reach it because of this air blowing up below it.

You can either
Dust Storm up to it, assuming you have monsters floating around with you (not super easy to do), or you can return here with an ability that allows you to take advantage of the wind (much easier).

Sorry for my shitty pictures.

I spent like 20 minutes trying to get that. Never got it.

lol I guessed I figured out before I was supposed to. You can
jump and dash in the air from the left to get under the key and double jump up to it. Pressing Y at the end of the jumps seemed to help too.

I don't agree with the first part. Betwen Alan Wake, Sine Mora, Fez, Trials, Spelunky and Dust XBLA might have it's most impressive year of exclusive titles so far.

But I definitely agree with the latter. This game is really impressive. The character design is not my cup of tea. The level design, the captivating rpg elements, the battle system, the smooth level traversal, the art style and the soundtrack are top-notch though. Add countless collectibles and secrets as well as time/point trials and you really get your money's worth. I'm also impressed how polished this game is for a one man project. All those percentage counters and open dots are evil.

Hmm,
tried every far left of the Mountains, kneeled on each dead end but no dice. I've already got the Braid thing, it's not that one right?

Looking at the leaderboards for % cleared, most of my friends list own the game which is good, however I am seeing 16%'s THERE IS NO EXCUSE GO PLAY IT NOW!

I am 276th, not bad for being sick all of today and working in the week :)

I was referring to the
dead end wall with the hourglass carved into it where you kneel down and are taken away by a tornado if you have the red orb.
If you already got that then I'm not sure off of the top of my head. Sadly, I am not near my xbox to check right now, but there might be another note regarding Blackmoor Mountain.

I can't recall another unmarked secret at the mountains besides the
Simon's Quest/Braid thing
either.

Ok the Diswasher. Fucking cool. Eh here's a rose on a grave. I'll pay my respects. Blam! Love it!
Catching on fire sucks. Any way to make it suck less?
28,000+ picked this up. Pretty good no?

Ice cream food will put fire out, there is also a ring which will put fire out also if you find one.

Just finished the game. Well, 109% :) I absolutely fucking loved it. Probably my favourite game so far this year. I'm curious to see a post mortem on this. It started out as XNA dream build play / xbox indie right if I remember.

Never got the 1000 hit combo tho. I think I powered up too early. Maybe a replay later this year.

Congrats Noggy/Hyperduck!

Thank you :) Yeah, I'm doing a post-mortem, will add a link when it's ready (probably sometime next week).

Fighting the last boss on Hardcore...what.the.fuck. Lol this shit is crazy.

Decided to sell all my shit (besides what I have equipped) and buy as many revival stones as I could. Ended up with 7. I thought it was enough but....damn. Lol.

Anyone else playing on Hardcore and at the final boss? Any thoughts?

Try equipping the amulet that does 0.1 attack and 0.1 fidget.

I played for 7 hours straight today. Been a long time since I could say that about anything. What a fantastic game.

You always hear people say about this game, "I can't believe one person did this." Well I can. The love is oozing out of every frame.

This game is like a master class in great design. Noogy's work reminds me of Hideki Kamiya's (Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe, Okami, Bayonetta) in that the mechanics are fundamentally satisfying and intuitive and harmonious. You really have to know your stuff to produce a game that feels like Dust. I don't care for the character art, but everything else is fantastic.

Heh, seems I didn't have to do any recommending since two of my friends asked me if I ever heard of this. Awesome!

your lucky my friends are lame... it's all good though as I was over at my friends house today and downloaded the demo on the system and will whine at him until he at least tries the demo :p

I am hoping to finish up dust on monday, but then I will be sad as despite having a backlog of over 500 games.... I don't have anything nearly as awesome looking or as good as dust to play lol.

Yeah me too. Finishing it up right now in my second 5 hour session. I can't recall the last time I played a game for that long. Which is weird because I used to do that all the time. It seems to just be this year that it has stopped. Nothing in my life has changed though.

ok im REALLY pissed at this game now. something happened to my save files when I turned on my.xbox.this.morning. ive lost about 3 hours of gameplay and about 7 quests as well. I still have the achievements ive.got but now I have to do this all over.again. what a fukn waste. there is no way im basically starting from scratch again. ive lost the slide ability and everything and now I have no idea which parts I have to replay next. fuck this.

Quest log should tell you what you have to do next. There aren't many options.

its beside the point. to go and have to do everything again due to a game error is not my.idea of a fun weekend.

Very odd, first report of this happening. I do know a few people were unable to load a save, and actually had to transfer the save from a corrupted storage device to the cloud, which fixed it. Perhaps this might work?

Back from gamescom downloading this tonight :)

Been in the complete dark this week.
How is the reception been in general around the press and on gaf?

Welcome back. Dust:AET has been reviewing very well(about 95% of the reviews have been an 8/10 or greater), and Leaderboards seem to be growing at a healthy rate. Very interested to see if there's influx of reviews/purchases now that Gamescom is over (or if Dust:AET is old news).

So yesterday I
freed a duck
, but I have no idea what game he's from. Can anyone tell me? I don't want to check a list online, because I don't want the other friends spoiled

Sure, that's
one of two HyperDucks, the guys who did the audio and music for the game. They didn't have 'animal personas' but I figured in a game full of animals it'd be cool to bring them to life. They do not come from any other game.

The only negative I would say about the game is the character design. Most of the people I meet look boring. Maybe with Dust 2 you can hire a character designer, Noogy ;)

But if you remember this is done by a person who never did programming etc before: Fucking good, man.

Oh yeah, game blacksout sometimes and throws you back at the dashboard (happened to a friend, too). Played about 5h and happened twice.

I love the character design. My only wish is to see my equipment equipped in the next game :)D).

BTW goddamn 5/6 sheep; I friggin' spelunked the frak out of those caverns and that last sheep is a lie dammit. I'm never going to see sunlight again.

The sheep
should also appear on your minimap (as a circle indicating treasure). Hope that helps. They are all indeed in the caves, would have been too cruel to put them in other regions.

It's quite possibly me :)

Yeah, you're in the game twice. Quite possibly the worst mistake I ever made. 1/4 stars.

Awesome news about the reviews and reception I really hope that Europe responses well to to the game next week and people start buying it! :D
