Nintendo Power ceasing publication

SMT

this show is not Breaking Bad why is it not Breaking Bad? it should be Breaking Bad dammit Breaking Bad
You know what, I stopped giving Nintendo Power my money for a reason, I was right; it turned into a shitfest.

The magazine is no longer what it was, I'm glad they pulled the plug.

Good riddance motherfuckers.

-the Dragon Warrior mini guide that came with one issue
Did they really have that? The original Dragon Warrior game itself came with every single thing you'd ever need to know about the game. A huge map complete with monster difficulty areas, all their stats. A booklet with every item, weapon and town in the game and what to buy where. All you needed was the game itself, and NP was giving that away practically free back then. $15 shipping. The day that game arrived it was so exciting. My parents were away and we had to beg our grandmother to call dad to make sure we were allowed to open the package.

Back then I was a wuss though. I would turn off the volume on the overworld because I always got scared out of my pants when the MONSTER APPROACHES! sound played. It was so loud and abrupt. Peaceful overworld music--LOUD SOUND PLAYS HERE COMES A MONSTER!!!!!

I felt when I cancelled that I had outgrown the magazine, but at this point I feel sad to see it go.

I remember it being like they had reset the target demographic to kids just getting into gaming at some point. It seemed like everything had gotten dumbed down and much moore juvenile. I canceled my sub since I felt like I was being shown the door and I was maybe 12 at the time? It might not have been all you...

Still, a great run for a game magazine, especially one focused on a single company's consoles.

EDIT: How I hated dragon warrior, which I bought based on Nintendo Power's feature on it. I got it since that whole turn-based combat thing seemed innovative, but having "run away" fail, just felt like horrible design. Why give me a choice that doesn't work? Didn't play another RPG until Secret of Mana, which I enjoyed much more.

End of an era for sure. I still remember sending in a letter with envelope art, are they still showing those in the letters section?

It actually got "rebooted" somewhat a few years ago and was a lot better than it had become, but thanks for saying "good riddance" to a bunch of people losing their jobs and a historic publication going out of print.

Yeah, it was inevitable. But during its hey-day, it was my prime source of news. And I loved the comic inserts.

I really hate to see this. I had a subscription until some point during the life of the Game Cube, and from then on only bought it now and then when I happened to see it in town.

As if the existence of the internet didn't do enough to kill this form of media, the entire smart phone and tablet scene seems to be putting the final nail in the coffin for it as more and more of the big magazines drop out. I can't really blame them, but I still think it sucks to see. I'll miss being able to physically flip through the pages.

Last two years has been pretty good and worth the sub. They were clearly trying to get to the quality level of the earlier issues. Too bad that came a little bit too late.

And "good riddance motherfuckers"? Heh

Man. Even if it wasn't at it's peak quality under Future, it's still a sad day. Wish they could've at least set up an arrangement to keep it as an online-only publication.

NP has been a legacy player in this industry for decades, and I still remember the day I saw one of my letters printed in the Feedback section. It introduced me to games I never would've payed attention to otherwise.

It was supposed to go out of print a while ago, and then they rebooted it. I should have bid its goodbyes long ago.

Yeah, pretty much, that magazine was catering to 7 year-olds when I canned my sub.

What's past is passed, do not cling to what once was. You can't hold a publication on name alone, especially with the intranets, Nintendo Power just proved that.

Erm, if I just subscribed to NP a couple months ago, what happens to my subscription? Do I get partially reimbursed?

At least you got a free duffelbag out of it, right?

What I really miss is GameNow, Gamepro.

We're saving trees people, chill.

End of an era. Going to the local library and checking out their back issues before heading to the rental shop was a big part of my summers as a kid.

...wow. That sucks. Nintendo Power is something I have nostalgia for, even if I haven't subscribed recently.

Hope they digitize the entire collection as a parting thing. I love looking at old issues, and seeing the stuff that got announced but never localized.

Man. A Torrent of every single issue in PDF form as a thank you gift to the fans would be amazing.

Have ever read an early NP? What did you think it ever was?

Now that they are closing, I must know - how did they create the maps for games like SMB3, of all levels? Photographs sound impractical, plus they were too sharp and lacked enemies, huds etc.

Haha, I forgot about that. I probably sent in a good 10 or more letters, all with envelope art on them. Never got published, but I still have all the reply letters they sent back to me. As a kid, I thought it was awesome that you got a true, personalized reply with every letter.

No, they don't publish envelope art anymore.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
That's downright depressing, but just about everything else is gone, so why not this too?

Someday, all we will have is IGN.

Fuck.

How did it change, exactly?

Also, great message for the team. You must make them feel so proud.

There was a point after the N64 that nintendo power got pretty bad but as i'm thinking about it now. Nintendo itself was pretty bad then as well.

Nintendo Power was a huge part of my childhood.

The maps.

The comics of the early 90s (the best thing, ever).

The posters.

I stopped reading soon after the SNES came out, though, and have assumed this would have happened a lot sooner, but I'm still sad for the loss of both another gaming mag and one that meant a lot to me in childhood.

Kills me, seeing this.

Is it weird that I can still SMELL what this magazine smelled like back in the day? I see that and I remember my best friend getting it in the mail and I remember the way the room smelled, the way the mag felt in our hands, fucking a, I remember how cool it was in the house...

Was there? Lots of video game pictures, reviews, features and news. How did it change? NP was originally written for a fourth grade reading level.

This is sad. With EGM and GamePro gone the era of my childhood game mags is over.

Same.
I remember hanging a few of the posters in my room back in the day but mostly for a few Mario spinoffs and c-tier n64 games that looked cool(The Buck Bumble one was surprisingly rad.)

A local library had backissues all the way through the start of the 90s so I spent a lot of time there reading about old games

This seriously sucks.

I remember my first issue was Mega Man II on the cover. I think back then I had the 6-month subscription, and recall how they'd entice me to renew with a free strategy guide for a game I never had but swore I'd get eventually.

This is pure horseshit. Why can't they release it as an e-magazine?

Really? WTF. This is an extremely sad news, though I understand that dedicated publications have been replaced long ago by internet.

I always liked the Final Fantasy one they sent me. I don't think I ended up playing the game till after FF 2 (IV). But the amount of effort that went into these books was fantastic! Always wondered why they made one for Ninja Gaiden 2 though.

LOL such a tiny airship.

Damn this is news to. Subscribed to NP since the first issue and only stopped during the Wii years. Getting a new NP when I was younger was better than getting a new game sometimes.

Whoever was left from the Phantasy Star Online Card Game, Custom Robo, and Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes days have my support.

I wish them luck in finding jobs.

The rest can go.

Wow, another piece of my childhood dies.

I remember being in the 5th grade and sneaking the new copy of Nintendo Power into my PeeChee folder (anyone remember that?) and reading it during class while we were supposed to be reading "WHere the Red Fern Grows"

Im 34

The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!
I have super fond memories of NP from my youngin days. I remember one time when I re-subbed, you got to pick from one of like 3 strat guides as a free bonus. I didn't own any of the games that the guides were for, so I included a letter in my like 10 year old handwriting asking if I could please have a Chrono Trigger guide instead. Sure enough, a month or so later, there's a Chrono Trigger guide in my mailbox.

Also, I won a N64 from one of the random like phone-in trivia contest in the back once. I literally couldn't believe it. It took a few months, but one day I got home from school and there was a good-sized UPS box sitting at my door that had Mario and the Nintendo logo.

To this day, that's the best/most expensive thing I've ever won in any sort of contest/lottery. That was a good day.

I remember getting the exclusive ULTRA 64 reveal issue in middle school and being blown away.

The rest of the Player's Guides, like the Game Boy one, were good, but this particular guide was godly to me as a kid:

np_mariomania.jpg

I went through it so much I wore out the spine. It had all sorts of extra little tidbits in it, like when they went through and measured the jump distances of the different games in blocks, and I think it was the first time I saw an image of the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2.

If there was one bad thing about it, I think it didn't quite cover one of the games featured all the way through, but I can't recall which one it was.

I had a year subscription towards the end of the N64's lifespan. Yeah...probably the worst time to have a subscription to Nintendo power.
