Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII announced for 2013 [Up3: Famitsu Details]

FFXIII is a bad game IMO, there's just not enough 'game' there.
XIII-2 went a long way in remedying the problems with it, a nice amount of exploration and whatnot
I think XIII is better looking back. They both have pretty pronounced issues, and neither are even comparable in quality to something like FFX.

Damn I wish we'd heard an update on XHD at this event. It's going to get such a thrashing on my Vita.

It's been a few hours since I checked in on this thread: any confirmation of the story details? I.E. is this FFXIII-3 or just a spin-off starring Lightning?

I'm actually kind of interested. I didn't play 13-2 cause I really didn't enjoy 13 much, but this sounds some what interesting. The clock in the corner of the screen sounds really dumb though.

Two issues with me, first I just don't like the FFXIII world, story and characters, although Lightining is effectively the best one.
Second thing, I'm 29 and at this point I'm not spending tons of hours in a RPG to be fooled with a crazy/crappy story which doesn't make any sense.
Toriyama and co. want to create the drama at all costs, but they can't come up with anything which is credible and doesn't feel awkward (ex. the girl with visions in FFXIII-2, the whole goddess and Caius thing).
In this sense I'm not giving them my money fore something which continues what I strongly disliked (FFXIII-2, the first FF game I've ever sold).
If as I said, this ends up being a completely new game about Lightining and they cut the bonds with the stupid past to create a new story with a new world and compelling open world gameplay, I might consider it, but at this point the only SE game from the japanese branch that I'm honestly looking forward to play is Versus, then if even that will suck when it's released Square Enix is pretty much done with japanese RPGs.

See and here lies the problem. You would love a game that cuts ties to the previous games because you didn't like them and feel this seems to be a departure but you're still put off by the FFXIII name and the fact that there's an FFXIII character there.

On the other hand there are people that liked the two XIII games and would love to continue the story created. They're screwed over too because it seems that there will be no direct continuation of the story while still keeping the name FFXIII and the hero of the game.

And so the game tries to appeal to both fan camps but falls short. I can honestly see this as a huge bomba and that is not something I'm very happy about as I love the Final Fantasy games.

I wonder if we'll ever see Type-0, I imagine if they don't announce a new version at TGS, it's not happening.

I personally think we'll see LR and Vs in a fairly close time period, much like Japan got XIII-2 within weeks Type-0. I think Versus could even be Nov '13 and LR June '14.

That's a pretty massive assumption there, who's to say it won't bring both new characters and worlds together with the old and bring a good sense of closure by the end? It's the end of Lightning's story, and Etro and Chaos too, it will tie up the loose ends in some way, there's no reason to think otherwise

The core gameplay is different, the world is actually completely different and it's set hundreds of years after FFXIII-2. I'm not too hopeful we'll ever seen Noel's, Hope's or Snow's arcs completed.

An FF with just one character? I don't like the sound of that. The description sounds like an action game, Final Fantasy: Revengeance? I hope it is an action game or the battle system is completely new, the paradigm system is not really suited for solo play imo.

Given the ending to XIII-2 there has to be some explanation as to what happened to the world, it's not the kind of thing that can be left out

And gameplay changes don't really matter in that way, as XIII-2 was a departure from XIII in itself, so I personally welcome them

Yeah the battle system is completely new.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?

Knowing Toriyama we'll get '..and the world was engulfed in Chaos and so a new world was born' and that's it.

There's a difference between changing from linear to more open world gameplay and then making it an almost action RPG with a solo character.

Simply said, this is not a mainline FF title and no one should be fooled into thinking it is. It really is something like Dirge of Cerberus rather than a FFXIII-3.

Versus will probably be there in trailer form, not playable
Pretty sure the past two times Versus was shown they initially denied it would be, and yet we got media

Versus... was that the game with the Italian theme-song? Sorry, that's all I remember from that title.

Well done on jumping to conclusions again!

Honestly dude, are you getting a mainline FF vibe out of the information we got about the game? It didn't even get the numbered sequel treatment. The gameplaye mechanics are in total contradiction of what FF games have used in the past and how they evolved and we're getting a measly 1.5 year full production for this game. It certainly doesn't scream mainline FF to me.

At most you will get a statement that development is progressing fine and to please be patient. SE already gave out their one piece of Versus media this year so they're done until next year.

My rough translation:
I talked to Hashimoto-san about various things. It seems that Versus XIII won't be at TGS. They are concentrating all their resources into the conclusion of the Lightning saga and FFXIV.

This franchise is at its lowest point in history. I cant believe how shitty these games are compared to the past games and they keep shelling them out COD style.

Were going to have 3 games of this crappy series before we can actually see a playable demo of Versus. This generation is so sad for JRPGs.

'Mainline FF game' doesn't mean much these days considering SE experiments with so many different styles. Versus didn't get the numbered sequel treatment. The gameplay mechanics are new, that's not a bad thing, it's good. Didn't the classic FF games of the PS1 era get nearer to 1.5 years than something like 4? What's the measure of a games length in production to it's quality?
Nothing outside of FFXV should scream mainline FF if you're going by your standards (provided it stays in development for 4 years amirite)

*slow-clap* Oh yeah, shocking news too!

Someone should make a new thread for this so that we can talk about Lightning Returns here.
