What about Other M? It came out when there was a huge install base and did quite poorly iirc.

I'm pretty sure Other M was critically panned for being bad and hated by most gamers, while Prime was praised and loved by most gamers.

Also Other M still sold over 1mil world wide so my point is right ;)

That's the last thing I want Nintendo wasting money on.

I'm really fucking sick of this mentality in gaming now adays that says everything has to have a fucking multiplayer functionality to it.

Leave Metroid 100% single player. Let the time and money continue to be spent on creating the best single player experiences.

To be clear, I'm not necessarily saying it's the right thing to do; I'm just pointing out that's what would need to happen for it to appeal to the mass consumer in order to sell 6+ million instead of 1-2 million.

I quoted the question on why it's not selling as much as Halo/ME. I'm not saying what I personally want the franchise to be.

I'd love to see an open-world, multi-planet Zelda style action/adventure Metroid game. A Super Metroid Galaxy so to speak...

Metroid Prime: A better and more important game than Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time combined.

Should have sold 100 billion copies.
Come one, guys. Let's make love, not war. All three of those games are God tier.

LOL @ the guy who considers Wii DKC better than the Prime games though.

Going through all the recent hires paints a picture:

- Two Vigil character artists
- One Vigil creature artist
- Uncharted 3 environment artist
- Black Ops level designer
- Borderlands and Rage lead artist
- Mythic and Bioware MMO engine engineer
- Out-of-core specialist
- Unit13 and InFamous 2 designer

I see first person, open world and fantasy.

I definitely see open world and fantasy, but I see just as much third person as first. I could easily see this being Zelda, Metroid, or a new IP. I think those 3 possibilities are what everyone expects. Retro would not waste their time on an on-rails shooter like Star Fox. It just doesn't seem up their alley.

Wants the largest console games publisher to avoid Nintendo's platforms.

Erm, are you trying to say love is a battlefield?

I've never understood why Metroid isn't a bigger brand than it is. Clearly, sci-fi sells in gaming, we have Halo and Mass Effect to prove that.

The Metroid games are even action-heavy at times. Has a visual unique, and really non-threatening main character.

Fantastic games that get rave reviews, but for some reason never really cater to a wider base.
Metroid needs to be treated more like a Western title in it's marketing than a Nintendo title. If they have something to show and some marketing guy laying around then all we need is a minute long trailer full of space pirate guts, Samus swearing and Ridley graphically tearing someone in half. A couple of those trailers at events like E3 coupled with good online multiplayer and you got yourself a stew 3 million seller shooting franchise. Knowing Nintendo... they'll probably hold everything to their chest while threatening to sue everyone until the week before launch when they show something.
Dude you can't try to resolve somebody else claiming a game is better than another, then say another game IS better than another...
The sarcasm and goofing around kinda flew over your head, eh?
Erm, are you trying to say love is a battlefield?
No, but love can bloom on the battlefield.

I have no idea where this is going.

Interesting? I rather say boring and stupid article about Nintendo vs. Apple, again.
That's still very positive for the Wii U, specifically the Gamepad, to be compared somehow to the iPad. A controller for a 300$ system make people so enthousiasts about it that they can't stop comparing it to a independant 500$ device.

I stopped reading at "article from GamesIndustry".

Also, when people go to tech blogs to read about the new iPhone the next day, what's the top story that day? To say it's a bad idea is ridiculous. It couldn't be more perfect for them.

It's actually not a bad article at all. Whether you agree with it or not, there's some pretty intelligent criticism of Nintendo's PR strategy there, not just hasty APPLE WILL CONSUME ALL doom and gloom.

And you're thinking of the standard iPad. The iPad mini is widely expected to retail in the $299-349 range, obviously much more competitive with Wii U.

I think in doing so though, you're going to alienate the Japanese market completely, and probably alienate the long term, hardcore Metroid fans.

I think having a series that sells 1 - 2 million is ok, considering they have other series that sell a lot more.

Metroid has never been a top seller, the way Zelda or Mario were. Let it continue to be what it is I say (in response to the original person you were responding to).

Yeah I would love it if a Metroid game sold 6 million copies, but not at the cost of making it something that it isn't.

All three Metroid Prime games combined: 4.4+ million worldwide.
Donkey Kong Country Returns: ~5 million worldwide.

There was one passionate dev on the web who called for Retro studios to do another Metroid

The games seems to be on top of the charts so much people can still see potential, and I agree.

It was reported all over I belive though I've seen it just vaguely, i'll try to find the article.

Many many potential customers of WiiU may be welcomed by this, it's not what you call a new IP, but it's a very good launch period booster for the core market.

If they could remaster it with fixes and also slight improvements and all the stuff that can be done without having to re-do stuff or call in big resources, I think there's a ton of things that a few programmers can do, texture resolution is a tricky think if they have the higher-res raw source they can easily use less compression.

This is not a case of remake begging, I have never done this (okay in past, recently it was only majora's mask but that was due to rumor), I think Metroid Prime deserves it most and genuinely, and it deserves it way more than all of those other remakes.

I'm pretty sure the first Metroid Prime out sold the other 2 by quite a bit.

They we're all a stable 1.5 Million, which proves in the second two the fanbase never left and was coming back to buy the new ones.

Original prime did 2 million because it was sold as PAK in Europe.

This just leaves Nintendo to sit on a case of "do-nothing". No innovation. Everything was "fine the way it was", and in light of a new console, same game, different setting.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
Gah, you beat me. I was just about to post that.
Anyway, looks like it could be pretty fun. Hopefully it's hard enough to keep my attention for longer than most iPhone games do.

Also, seems like NintendoLand has gotten a rating of E10+.

I'm intrigued as to what the "crude humor" could possibly be, unless you have to fart to inflate the balloons or something?

Thanks for the link.
I like what I see but it looks like a Mario Party mini-game :s

Or the type of game that would top the charts on an iOS device...

Edit: Not being an idiot advocating this should be on iOS, just that it's the type of game that sucks a lot of people in on that platform and could do the same for the U.

What I find most interesting about that Balloon Trip preview is this text:

Click on the banner below to enter our Wii U coverage hub, which will be updated throughout the month with many more videos and previews.

So, hopefully, there will be a lot more info coming.

Balloon Trip looks like simple fun. Love the music.

Wonder if we'll get a slow trickle of information this week leading up to the event. Exciting.

In part I agree, but say what you like - Hunters was great.

The game looks like a fun iOS title. Which isn't bad, but also.. not something would spend 50-60 bucks on.. granted not alone.

Yea but you're not paying 50-60 bucks for it. There are 11 other games in the package as well. You're comment made it sound like you'd have to pay full price for that Balloon Trip game.

10 quotes? My work here is done.

But yeah, looks crisp and fluid. I am betting destroying all the mines on the GamePad for extra score will become quite challenging.

Balloon Trip looks pretty cool and the art style makes me wonder if we'll see more of the Little Big Planet/Epic Yarn-like visuals later on in future Wii U titles. These Nintendo Land games look like fun but local multiplayer is something I won't be doing much of anymore.

Oh hmm.. I see

I guess what saying is.. it wouldn't sell me on the game on it's own.. and the first official thing we've seen since e3 of the title if not mistaken.

With Gameinformer releasing a lot of Nintendo Land info, I hope that means Nintendo will not spend too much time talking about it Thursday, I would hate for them to eat up a lot of the time going over Nintendo Land once again. They can just put out videos with deep explanations, more games less talking is what I want.

Gameinformer will share info on the upcoming launch titles.
as Nintendo will do in the conf. It's a launch title, they will talk A LOT about Land. And New Mario. Ad price-date-etc...

We all know that.

If new games can come, it will be from a Japanes event (Direct or something like that)

You, me, Gaf...cannot be so sold about Land, but it's obviously a crucial title for Nintendo Wii U launch

Online multiplayer; scratch that, good online multiplayer is what sells Halo. If Metroid can add "good" online multiplayer I'd assume it would add quite a few extra million copies sold than what the original Prime games did.

The Prime games sold to the core Metroid fans, but it didn't sell to the mass FPS crowd because it lacked multiplayer.

Nintendo should focus on having good online for Mario Kart and later Super Smash Bros. That's what sells based on MP.

On the subject, who here is hoping Nintendo incorporates Mario Kart 7's "Communities" feature system-wide in the Wii U? What are the chances realistically?

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.

Did it sell over 400k in Japan?

Interestingly, the game is called Balloon Trip, but the footage of the game is Balloon Trip Breeze.

Therefore, perhaps Breeze is the name of the level, and the other levels will be named after different Weather effects?

Breeze could also be the level of difficulty. "It was a Breeze to get through."
