Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward ("Good People Die") - US 3DS/Vita release, fall

RurouniZel

Asks questions so Ezalc doesn't have to
*sigh* So my sister comes home from Japan with her copy of Zennin Shibou Desu (VLR).

My will power broke. I'm playing it now. It's quite good, but I'll say no more than that.

Scrafty, you son of a bitch! :) I just started watching the anime prologue and DAMN, I get all shivery seeing Zero and... knowing... what I now know...

*trembles*

I'm not sure NeoGAF will be ready for another bubbly font of Neiteio enthusiasm when VLR comes out (see also: the LTTP thread).

I have a feeling this time will be extra bubbly.

EDIT: Judging from that CGI rabbit... A certain someone is a sicker fuck than ever before!

But this time, most of us won't just be watching your reaction, we'll be experiencing it as well. I have a feeling I'll be extra bubbly as well.

I'll be bubblier than an over-carbonated rootbeer bubble bath. I hope K makes more appearances; I love his design, personality and English voice.

If it'll help you calm down, I have a nice relaxing medication I can recommend. ;P

True! Personally I'll probably avoid any threads on the game until I'm done, though. I don't want to be spoiled!!

Wait, where can I hear his English voice??

A quick English trailer for you :) (doesn't have English voices though)

That rabbit is... actually kind of cute.

999 spoiler:
I can't help but fawn over Akane, even as she tries to kill me.

Who, me? Why I would never
BUY THE GAME
do that!

LOL! And this is weird: When I quote your post, Scrafty, it includes the phrase "BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT IT'S SO GOOD BUY IT" with the word "email" in brackets like image codes. Yet it doesn't show up in preview or when actually posted! o_O

That's my signature brand of subliminal messaging. It's a Devil family trade secret :X

Still incredibly excited for this, but after seeing the trailer I wish they stuck to 2D environments and portraits, in the worst case all the characters should be 2D!! It just looks so much better, more detailed and believele. As soon as you bring people into a 3D space the graphics have to be incredible in order to be immersive.

Is there a way to experience the story of 999 without having to play through the game multiple times? I don't like replaying games, especially not immediately after finishing them.

I believe you only need to see one other specific ending before being able to get the true ending, so it would be 2 playthroughs minimum. If it helps, most of the puzzles are different on each of those playthrough because you choose different rooms (look up a guide), and the story is definitely different enough to not feel stale at all.

Think of it as playing an A side and B side of the same game

Mmm. I'll have to think about it. I'm also not a fan of following a guide step-by-step to make sure I get the proper endings. Kinda removes the sense of adventure. Maybe this game isn't for me... I dunno. I might look at some LPs to make up my mind.

There's a third ending that's good to watch and adds something to the story.
The other three endings can be looked up on youtube, but the game is so good that I reccommend multiple playthroughs...

It's not really step by step so much as it is which "path" you take through the game. It's as simple as
5, 8 and 6
and
4, 7, and 1
, when choosing which numbered doors you go through. Notice that they're completely different, which = completely different puzzles that you wouldn't have been able to experience without doing a 2nd playthrough. There are an additional 4 dialogue choice conditions to the 2nd playthrough but like I said, it's hardly a step-by-step thing since you could sum up the walkthrough in about 2-3 sentences.

Yeah, thinking of playing through 999 multiple times as a "replay" is really missing the whole point of this type of game. That would be sort of like stopping as soon as you get your first Game Over in a difficult platformer. It says the game's over, but it's not really the end of the game, just the end of that "session", and playing multiple "sessions" to reach the final ending is an integral part of the experience.

As perorist says, since any one playthrough can only take you through something like a third of the game's puzzles and scenario, there's very little that's "the same" between the different runs through the storyline (and those parts that are the same, the game fully expects you to skip over). You probably will end up doing a few of the puzzles more than once if you want to get all of the endings (which is the best way of experiencing the game IMO), but it's entirely possible to reach the true ending without doing any puzzle twice except the one at the very beginning.

Incidentally, the sequel, VLR, goes even further with this. You need to skip back and forth between a huge number of different routes, so you could theoretically say you're doing tens of different "playthroughs", but there is literally never any need to do the same puzzle twice, and it's quite rare that you'll read scenario text that you've read before.

So... People who have played VLR... Don't spoil the context or give away the details, but tell me...
Do we get to see June, unmasked in polygonal 3D?

Haven't played VLR, but I can answer this from what I've been spoiled on. Check your PMs in a moment.

(And the rest of you, take no meaning from that if you're trying to read between the lines: I've been spoiled on who doesn't appear as well as who does. Only thing I'll say publicly is that Clover's in it.)

Akselziys, I've been meaning to ask this for a while. We all know the 3DS is region-locked, but early on the 3DS' lifespan it was stated that devs could choose to make games region-free. I don't know how accurate this is, but would you guys be able to make VLR (or any 3DS game, for that matter) region-free if you wanted to?

Hmm, as far as I know I haven't heard of that being an option regardless.

But I'd think if it were, the devs involved might shy away from it, especially in this case where Europe is also releasing the game. Since we could potentially cannibalize one or the others' sales.

Another reason for shying away from it, is you'd potentially damage any releases in other territories, if the game could easily be purchased and played. Publishers in those regions probably would lose interest if they couldn't have a monopoly on a product in their own region.

But yeah, as far as I'm aware I don't think that's an option, but I could be wrong :)

Mr. Ringo, I love this picture, and I must ask if you would be willing to create an avatar size for little ol' me? :)

That already is avatar size (it is 90x120 and up to 100x120 is permitted), so you can use it straight away.

On topic question for Akselziys, do you have any estimate for when you are going to able to reveal more info about that VLR watch?

Every time I see this thread bumped, I think that it's new information on the preorder watches. Once again, I leave disappointed. ;_;

There are like, three flags in the entire game to determine endings. You won't be following anything step by step, the process is nowhere near that complex. You look at a tiny picture with like 5 lines and some boxes and you're like oh.

I hear ya, man. I had a bit of a crush on Lotus before I realized she was like, 40.

tumblr_lr7bazLVzM1ql9idp.gif
Me too, only thing is, finding out her age didn't change anything for me. Lotus is a MILF, plain and simple.

Clover on the other hand, I thought was like 13, do I was scared to have a crush on her for fear of feeling like a perv. xD

We're getting more news t-?!?! That's almost here! Needs info.......x_x

How old is Clover supposed to be in 999? I figured around 18-21, but I cannot seem to remember if her exact age was addressed.

If Lotus is too "MILF-y" for you and Clover is "barely legal," just have both of them and the average age is, like, 30 or something.

MATH.
