What if it comes tomorrow?
I'll be a happy camper! It's just that the youtube app being released early made me expect the maps one before iOS 6 hits officially. If we don't get it by tomorrow I hope it's out at least until the end of this week.

I wish we could hide apps from the home screen. Why won't you let me hide stocks and newstand apple? :(

Oh, and contacts app too. I can access those through my phone app as I normally do.

I just want a blank no apps front screen, oh well, my single app (the calendar) idea is ok.

Just waiting for google to release googlemaps app already, Maps has improved from beta 1 to golden master, but still it ain't no googlemaps.

I'm curious about the South American region of the new Maps app and how often they're planning to improve on it, at least in the more populated areas. If it's considered lackluster in North America I can only imagine how's the situation down here.

(I know, I can download it right now, install and play with it but I'm not really in a rush.)

Yeah, transit mapping drama is going to be a clusterfuck tomorrow. Justifiably so; iOS 6 is great in all other ways, but taking crucial functionality out of your OS is a huge no-no.

Any word on when Google Maps is coming? I assumed they'd throw it up by Friday.

I think the Maps update is going to really piss some people off.

Seeing a bunch of app updates tonight with iOS6 compatibility, but haven't seen anything with Passbook yet.

Nooooo! A few minutes after I have to leave for work. So will have to download it when my shift is over.
Probably better off that way. I can only imagine how slow the update is going to be when it first hits and everybody downloads it at once.

Tried out turn-by-turn again, keeping an eye on the battery. On a 10-minute drive on a straight path with two turns, it ate up 5%.

MapGate is going to be a pretty big deal IMO. Hopefully I'm wrong but I have a feeling A LOT of people are going to be angry.

Traffic information has been getting better as the week as been going on (I'm assuming more and more people are installing GM?) but there are also tons of restaurants near me that are in the wrong locations not to mention the lack of transit data.

This launch reminds me of the 3G (3gs?) launch when Apple decided to release a new phone, a new iOS, mobileme, iTunes and I want to say even a new version of OS X all on the same day.

I know a lot of people (myself included) have been harsh on this launch but A LOT of stuff under the hood everywhere is changing. Removal of the youtube app, worse maps app, app store is completely redone (as of 7:30 PST on the eve of the launch - still isn't working how it shoul), itunes music store is totally redone. Neither one are better IMO than the old ones. Passbook has the potential to be either awesome or the new Newsstand app. I could really see it going either way at the moment.

While not directly related to Apple - the new Twitter app got updated today, which a lot of people have said is for the worse. Could leave a bad impression for one of the bigger selling points of iOS6 - Twitter/Facebook integration.

Tomorrow a lot of people are going to update their phones to iOS6 and I'm not sure everyone will welcome the sheer number of changes that are going on.

Man, I seriously hope Passbook becomes something big. Specially here in Japan where we already have some phone wallet services.. it would be awesome to be able to pay all my shopping just by placing my phone on top of the scanner...

But alas, I have yet to hear anything about this here in Japan :(

Grandpa Mossberg:

The biggest drawback I found is the new Maps app. Apple has replaced Google Maps with a new maps app of its own. This app has one huge advantage over the iPhone version of Google Maps—it now offers free, voice-prompted, turn-by-turn navigation. Google had made this available on its Android phones, but not the iPhone. Apple’s navigation worked very well, with clear directions displayed as large green highway signs.

But the app is in other ways a step backward from the familiar Google app. For instance, while Apple’s maps feature a 3-D “Flyover” view of some central cities, they lack Google’s very useful ground-level photographic street views. And they also lack public-transit routing. Apple will instead link you to third-party transit apps. Also, while I found Apple’s maps accurate, they tend to default to a more zoomed-in view than Google’s, making them look emptier until you zoom out.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but any time I use any mapping or gps while in my car, my phone is charging. I consider my car a secondary charging station.

I don't see how you're being a jerk, Alex. lol

I lack a charger, but I wanted to see how much battery it would eat up on my drive earlier.

Yeah, I've used a turn by turn app on my iPhone for a while now, and it always destroys the battery. Im fairly certain that's true of every smartphone.

If you're on a road trip using turn by turn, bring a charger.

Oh, duh. Yeah, that reminds me of my HTC Evo. GPS/Turn by Turn with 3G data just destroyed the battery. Actually made the phone into a nice heat source.

Yes, my 4S also got pretty hot. Though, it's been an ongoing problem for me for some time now (4S gets hot, but nothing is running and the phone is on sleep).

My 4 gets hot when I use my car charger. Also charges faster, Likely due to the higher current drawn by the iPhone. Likely, similar thing is occurring with iPhones now. More power = more current = more heat

Having trouble with iMessages. Okay, so I use Messages on my iPhone, iPad and Mac. When I send from my Mac or my iPad to my brother, he gets the messages as a separate message group on his iPhone.

Why wouldn't they be combined as one? He claims he has my email address in my contact...

It goes by the first message in the whole series, so you must have sent a message from your phone number on your phone first. You have to send a new message from your phone from your email.

I wouldn't worry about it, though. 10.8.2 and iOS 6 are merging phone numbers and emails so all devices can use them as merged IDs.

Because thats how Mountain Lion works right now. Thats how it was on the iPad also until iOS 6. It will be fixed with 10.8.2 I believe.

Quick, have you made any observations about the data use for turn-by-turn at all?

I haven't checked how much exactly from the last time I did turn-by-turn, but it barely made a dent on my data. I drove around with it for about 15 minutes on separate occasions in the same day, but around the same area.

Next time, I'll reset my Cellular Usage in Settings, and do turn-by-turn to see how much data exactly it eats up.

Anyone with Ford Sync managing to get the text message feature working (which required Bluetooth MAP profile)?

No luck with my iPhone 4.

I used it before, it's probably best on lockscreen mode--the screen is off, only pops on to remind you of upcoming turns, etc.

It seems to cache a lot. When I tested on the 4S, turning off cellular data, it could still have map data for a mile or two, and kept the directions on pace. It would even re-route me if I specifically made multiple wrong turns. You can eventually get it to try to ask the server again, and/or lose map data, if you keep going too long without data.

The fact that maps are vector probably save a lot of data from the previous tile-based image maps.

I wonder if icloud.com, iPhoto iOS/OS X will be switched over to Apple maps from google anytime soon.

I hope they switch over iPhoto iOS from the ugly POS they use now. iPhoto OS X is a maybe once they port the code over to Mac, and there have been hints that they are doing so. iCloud.com, on the other hand, probably not any time soon. Maybe they're working on getting their maps viewable in browsers, but I wouldn't be surprised if they don't really care about that.

I really do hope they offer a direct method for users to contribute changes to their maps though, like Google has with Map Maker. It'd be a big step in trying to catch up with Google. There are so many inaccuracies and mistakes in it that I'm itching to fix that it's not happy. I've submitted a lot via "Report a problem," but none of them have been addressed.

At this point, I can't wait for Google to release their own Maps app because their's is hands down the most comprehensive and reliable.

I have a feeling it could be some ways off. Maybe Google wants users to throw a big fuss about functionality that's now missing in the new Maps app before proudly announcing that they've got the solution, LOL.

Traffic information has been getting better as the week as been going on (I'm assuming more and more people are installing GM?)

That seems entirely anecdotal. I haven't seen any evidence at all that iOS 6 users contribute to traffic information and it doesn't seem to have improved at all in Sydney since it was introduced. All I know is that traffic information is (partially) sourced from Waze and it's about as sparse as Waze is.

So I open up passbook and the brightness immediately goes all the way up. Then it shows a page with a link to the App Store. When I click it, it seems to just show me random apps. How does this work?

In preperation for iOS6 I just wanted to check my options. I've only ever had a 4S which started out on iOS5 so I've never upgraded personally but when I tried to upgrade a friend's phone from 4 to 5 it said that I would have to sync the phone or lose everything on it. Is this still the case from iOS5 to 6?

The only PC I connect my phone to is my work laptop. This means that I can't have all my music/apps on there and I don't sync with the laptop - I manage my files manually. Is there any way I can update to iOS6 without losing everything on the phone? Having to start again on my music and videos would be a real pain

Would I also lose all the saves for the games that don't save on the cloud? Is there any way around this to prevent stuff being lost? I can't be the only person in the position that doesn't sync their phone to a device - surely there must be some workaround?
