Famitsu: Wii U region-lock confirmed

I'm thinking here, has Nintendo ever released a console (not handheld) that wasn't region locked in some fashion?
I believe that the DS Lite was not region-locked as I remembered playing the Japanese Dragon Quest IX before purchasing the North American version. Interesting, the one can change the menu language of the DS Lite to Japanese.

I'm big on importing so this is disappointing to hear.

Perhaps the valiant heroes who defeated the Wii and freed the citizens of Importia will make an appearance once again.

Come on then hackers, get over any of that Nintendo nostalgia and make this your priority box to crack wide open.

Simply unacceptable, and a lot more more furore should be generated and displayed about this than there will be.

I don't think it's nostalgia stopping them.

More the part where Nintendo (now) actually designs their system OS properly.

I still find it amazing that region locking is allowed under various laws which exist in the world such as the EU Treaties in that companies cannot price fix or run a cartel.

region locking is price fixing, there is no argument on this. You are controlling how much the consumer must pay, but introducing artificial systems for no other reason to control the price of the good.

in a globalized world and with free trade agreements in place between numerous nations, it should be illegal.

Oh man! Nothing worse than only getting to play a demo 30 times! Oh wait! That's more than enough to form an opinion on a game. Such a silly "burn" on your part.

Why limit them at all? And in case you haven't noticed, there's demos with a 5 play limit as well. But yeah, you're right, let's just apologize for shitty anti-gamer behavior. Thank god Nintendo figured out how to limit plays on demos before coming up with an achievement system or learning how to tie purchases to users instead of to hardware.

Vita's retail games are region free, as were PSP's, and PS3's. Sony's stupid PSN account stuff is because they view handhelds as 1 per person, thus only 1 account needed. They view consoles as family devices, hence more than 1 account. PS4 won't be region locked.

You can't say that for sure but it probably will be.

I'd never import a game that I couldn't read the text in, but it still sucks for the people who are going to get fucked over by NoA, NoE seems relatively ok at bringing stuff over.

Unfortunate. Personally I'm fine with buying multiple handhelds in different colors and so on. As a collector I'd do it even with them being region free. They don't take much space. Home consoles though.... I'll have to pass on that.

This gen should tell you that it's not always games in foreign languages that don't get released in certain regions.

This is so fucking stupid. It's punishing a niche for no good reason.

No matter what my overall opinions about Sony and Nintendo are, I dearly wish Nintendo would take a page out of Sony's book in this respect.

I had long assumed as much. One of the primary reasons I'll be picking up a launch unit is that they're invariably the easiest to crack.

Unsurprising and expected. Nintendo will continue doing this because they can. People will bitch and moan from time to time but in the end all wrongs will melt away because they'll always be the golden savior of the industry in the eyes of their fans.

I honestly haven't really kept up with what gets released and what doesn't, I just know that I'm relatively fine in the UK, save from a few (very) late releases.

Blame the shitty dollar if you wanna blame anything. US games are already massively cheaper than JP ones and the yen is so strong Japanese gamers could easily import most language-light games on the way cheap. Need that yen.

The entire EU is in the same console region.

While I agree with you about the nature of region locking, see the previous paragraph.

Unless the UN become an economical governing body, or nintendo goofed up and introduced sub-regions in EU and/or US, there's no international law that can meet your demands.

Yep, we are indeed fine in the UK. We got brilliant localised versions of Xenoblade, Last Story and Pandoras Tower.

...america didn't. Took all hell to get the first two on extremely limited release, and the latter never arrived there.

A cartel is when competing (the key point) companies collude to fix the price of a particular good or service. Region-locking is different from that.

It more falls into the area of protecting regional licensing agreements. While some free trade deals attempt to remove those protections, there's nothing preventing a company from behaving in that way.

It's got less to do with the state of the USD and more to do with there never being a Nintendo home console that was region free. In the past it wasn't as much of an issue because it was easier to get around, but this is standard operating practice for Nintendo since the NES days.

Pretty much everything video game related is cheaper in the US, in the UK we're paying the equivalent of $485 for a deluxe WiiU (except for those lucky amazon preorderers who got it for $320). So yeah it's not just JP that gets shafted by pricing.

Expected news and I wasn't that interested in a Wii U in the first place, but if this was region free I'm sure I would've taken a harder look @ getting one... I'm not really interested in paying Australian prices...

Yeah same. I might take the trouble to import from the US one day...and I might not.

Would have got a launch model if region free just because.

I don't blame Nintendo though. If you region lock the shit out of your stuff and it still sells like hot cakes, you would be pretty stupid to remove it for your next console.

Oops I guess I meant was there a region lock specifically for Australia but from the responses it looks like it just it's just PAL region locking. Thanks

You would like to think so. I have asked Nintendo of Australia but they have no information about it. 99% it will be PAL but you never know because locking to Australia/NZ makes a whole lot of "sense".

I can only read English, so to me it doesn't make any noticeable impact so long as NoE keep up their good work this gen.

There were a few games we didnt get in PAL (Trauma Team, Fatal Frame 4, Excitebots) but we did get Xenoblade, Pandora's Tower, Disaster Day of Crisis and Last Story. Thats a much better record than in recent generations.

No doubt it will suck when inevitably a game comes out in the USA that is great and never comes out in Australia. No doubt it sucks for PAL/NA gamers who can speak and read Japanese for those games that never leave Japan.

However, as much as I dislike region locking, I have to concede it has had no downside for me personally on the last system I bought (3DS). Well, not as much as it used to do years and years ago where the PAL delay was typically 12 months plus.

Totally expected, totally expected. This is actually the first time the subject of Wii U region free gaming had even crossed my mind.

And yet... Eeeeeeehhhhhh, this always upsets me as an avid importer. :C

How is it anti-gamer behavior? The issue is a bullet point on peoples lists who hold the company in an ill light. Its a demo, demo the game and decide if youd like to buy.

Its not as if the 6th or 31st play would have been the one that pushed someone over the edge on their decision to buy. It harms literally no one.

Also don't forget to criticize the others. Microsoft has quite the anti-film viewer approach by charging you to view Netflix and Sony took away otherOS!

Nintendo had a good run.

But seriously, it was a nice selling point when I picked up a PS3 but I wouldn't expect it since none of my other consoles fully embraced it.

Yes it is but I believe companies operating in the EU (Like Nintendo) are not allowed to operate systems that restrict people importing goods right?

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
For those constantly referring to the NoE situation and their work this generation, the Wii had such a sorry state of titles in its later life that yes, only the first party published fare were what was to anticipate. But...

For those to dare to dream that their £300 launch console may actually be a success with fthird parties this time around, anticipate your very own Persona 4:Arena situation and more when third parties drop the ball and kick it into the sewers.
