Nintendo's New 3DS Ad Campaign - "I Am Not A Gamer"

Is anyone actually outraged by this? :lol

Yes there are actual people.. I originally saw this being debated on Kotaku... and I still don't see what people saw in the ads to imply it.

It's an ad-campaign squarely focused on enticing girls/women to play video games.

This...isn't related at all with the commercials.

Of course it is. No one with a brain and common sense would make the decision Diana supposedly makes in that ad. Someone who "isn't a gamer" would never go near a 3DS, and by all accounts they aren't. I doubt these ads will do Nintendo any good in their pursuit once again for my mother's attention.

It alienates people with brains and common sense. It alienates people that have been paying attention to what's been happening in the mobile/handheld space. People aren't idiots. They're not going to look at these horrible ads and go, "Yeah, I think I'd like to stop spending 99 cents on games/apps that I could pay Nintendo 20-40 dollars for." Nintendo is so completely out of touch with reality. "Hmmm do I buy a camera/art app on a device with the worlds shittiest ****ing cameras and screens? Or buy one on an iOS device with an amazing camera/screen? Tough choice."

Speaking of brains and common sense, have you noticed this is a New Super Mario Bros 2 ad?

meh, i took this to mean she wasn't playing a game but having an experience, or something like that. "i'm not a Cheetoh-stained dweeb, i'm a human being and yet i play games, too" doesn't seem to be the message here.

either way it's a terrible ad

No one posted this yet?

The more bizarre thing in the ad is whether or not she's using "point totals" purely as a gymastics scoring reference or an oblique reference to high scores, which I feel like represents an incredibly small component of modern games.

I like these ads, they target the "non gamers" that Nintendo wants to get back.

I mean, I can definitely understand the differing opinion expressed here and the intensity for as much, but this is pretty much how I'm seeing it.

I think it's better to say "I'm not a gamer but I enjoy Mario/Art Academy/whatever" rather than "I'm so hardcore and Nintendo games are the shit".

Geez, way to incite gamer rage with that thread title, OP.

I like this new "I am not a gamer, but I am fuckin' gold medalist Gaby Douglas. Suck my dick, bitches!" campaign.

Campaign isn't aimed at us anymore. They're done with that. Along with Glee's Dianna Agron and Modern Family's Sarah Hyland, I like that it's targeting the female demographic that's harder to persuade to buy the more traditional gamer-centric 3DS in this day and age.

But as others have pointed before, $30 for a crossword game? Yeah, eat dick.

I clicked on the Diana ad. It's an ad for Art Academy. No games in sight. Just a 30 dollar crappy app that utilizes the low res 3DS screen and awful cameras.

I can't believe someone is actually outraged at this. Get a fucking grip.

It's not the ads some people are mad about it. It's Nintendo's blind stupidity. 30 dollar crossword puzzle game. 30 dollar art app. In the face of apps and games that are either free or 99 cents and are better. I'm not sure if Nintendo are just idiots, or they think people are idiots and will forget the options they have.

The thing about gamers is that you don't need to advertise to them. All you need to do is "have gamer games."

Didn't the DS Art Academy retail title sell very well?

i'm legitimately convinced that baconsammy would literally murder a nintendo employee if he believed he could get away with it. like, actual premeditated first-degree murder.

You're talking about the relationship between players, Nintendo devices, and iOS devices. I don't think that is related to this advertisement campaign at all.

Don't buy it, story done.

If someone buys it and enjoys it, who cares, if he doesn't like it, won't be the first or last mispurchase.

Sony doesn't have the word "game" in their ads. So no, not as bad.
Yes, they have crying baby dolls.

nobody seems to actually be offended so i wish everyone would stop saying that.

it's possible to have a discussion where all sides are not offended.

edit: disregard the journalists who act offended for hits.

Actual quote: "I am not a gamer; With my 3DS, i'm a coin collecting champion"

Thread title: "I am not a gamer"

Why? Is there a way to monetize gaf clicks that I'm unaware of or something?

Bad wording and a terrible ad. But the point does seem to be shes not just playing, shes competing. Still stupid.

Still a waste of a face; Nintendo of America aren't really adjusting well to selling the 3DS are they?

Am confused how this made it out tbh, surely someone experienced thought 'this is maybe a bad idea...'?

I've never really liked most Nintendo ads since the Wii launched, but this one doesn't seem any worse. I don't think it's an affront to "gamers," it's simply acknowledging the very real fact that many people out there have a negative view of people who play games habitually, and they want those people to give them money. Not sure if it will work, but it's an understandable tactic.

Anybody who watched the entire ad, and is still offended, either he has an extreme bias against Nintendo or needs to get his head checked.

Yeah, the ad was pretty bad but you'd have to be listening pretty selectively to think that they were calling people basement dwellers.

Get a bunch of people in Nintendo costumes to sit at a bar saying...

Mario: "He made me fall into a pit..."

Link: "He didn't go get hearts before the final fight..."

Pikachu: "Pika Pika Pikachu" (Never went to the Pokecenter)

Donkey Kong: "My programers got back at that jerk with DKCR"

Samus: "Guy spent 5 hours and never got the hang of bomb jumping."

Pikmin: "He burned my entire family, and drowned the rest of my town!"

All: "Screw Michael"

The way I interpreted the ads (at least the Art Academy one) was "I'm not a gamer, but I still like using the 3DS". It didn't offend me.

Yikes cry me a river, it is just an ad and she doesn't even mean what the title seems to suggest. Leaving out part of a quote can be more deceptive than just making it up. Anyways I don't know who this girl is, maybe they should have gotten a big time athlete like Tebow.

The reactions in this thread are exactly why Nintendo is advertising that you don't have to be a gamer to enjoy the system. The gaming community can seem very inclusive and jaded.

Poorly executed commercial, but the point being made is you don't need to be a gamer, as well as you are more than gaming, you are using your imagination.
