Cliffy B departs Epic - Takes break from industry - GAF writes disturbing fan fiction

Whenever Cliffy talks about game design what he says is essentially exactly the opposite of what Epic makes. I've wondered about that for a while - maybe it finally got to him.

"I'm most interested in games with strong systems that let players explore a large mechanical space with freedom." Makes a linear cinematic sequel.
Been thinking the same thing. For a while it seemed his most honest and legitametly excitement or hype was for Infinity Blade. It was by far his biggest innovation leap since gears.

Thats a lonf gap and I am very excited to see what he ends up making.

Fuck the haters.

Cliff's not only an incredible mind in the industry. He's a trendsetter. What's he's done for the industry is far beyond being the architect behind one of the greatest developers in the business. His example has put developers in the forefront of the industry. He's turned developers into rock stars, and furthered the relationship between devs and gamers. He's someone all gamers should look up too.

He's a trendsetter alright. He's already apologized for what Gears has done to the industry, which don't get me wrong I appreciate the apology but the damage has been done. Then again I'm of the mind of don't blame the first, blame all the followers (like EA) who can't think of the original idea themselves.

I only hope that if he decides to come back to the industry he can join someone like Valve and make some truly great and innovative stuff that helps the industry in a positive way. Or at the very least just don't become famous developer #246 to open up an ios studio and fade away there.

i play lots of gears games and play nothing from boring old bad graphics valve. last thing i played from valve was, well i guess portal 2, which bored me to tears and was one of my worst gaming experiences ever, at that point i pretty much swore to never, ever, get suckered into playing a portal game again. also, the half life series while ironically being lauded for it's creativity, is one of the most cliched, rote, boring, and tired series in gaming. though dont get me wrong the first one deserves it's status, it was amazing. the successors are garbage.

hope that helps.

That actually helps with nothing. I have no idea what your point is. I have an easier time finding out Mitt Romney's points than yours.

You want him to work on steam?

My point was someone like Valve would let him work on what he wants to work on if they have faith in his abilities, which they would if they hired him. There wouldn't be someone breathing down his neck saying he has to tweak this or that so the focus groups can play it.

Wow, that's crazy.

Hope he comes back eventually. Seems like a really cool dude and he's made some fun games.

Good luck, Mr. B!

Bunch of grump asses in here. I can't think of single game he's had a hand in that I didn't enjoy, fucking Jazz Jackrabbit consumed my life when it first came out. I eagerly anticipate his inevitable return.

Cliff, thanks for the good times dude.

You've earned the right to kick back and just enjoy life. If you ever decide to come back, we'll be here.

If not....I've seen your wife....I wouldn't be back either.

whenever you read things about "taking a break" and such, i always wonder who got fired and why, who quit, and whats the real story.

nah mean?

Not to say the surface story here couldn't be true as well.

My best guess is, Cliffy just wants to run the show, strike out on his own for gold, that kind of thing. Control, autonomy, excitement, etc.

It is very unprofessional to get a new gig while you are being paid by someone else. I didn't want to do that. I honestly want to just chill at the beach for a bit with my wife and dogs, maybe show her Japan at some point. And yes, we did steal Casey that night. Strange thing is she's now marrying Tanya Jessen's ex husband.

You should hit two birds with one stone. Okinawa. That's where I plan to go the next time I go to Japan. There, Hokkaido and Osaka.

Hopefully you'll stay in touch with GAF or that we'll still see you on Bonus Round or whatever every so often.

Cheers, sir!
