Wasn't YS sold out?

Maybe:

BTW, I wonder what the deal is with the stock of this game.

It is completely sold out everywhere. Resellers online are having a heyday. Companies like Amazon.jp are showing a 1-2 month-away restock. I have seen various Falcom tweets about the next batch of stock, but it sounds like it could be a ways off.

Did Falcom underestimate demand? Or did they ship it low on purpose?

At least in today's day and age we always have the option of buying digital.

honorless

We don't have "get out of jail free" cards, but if we did, she'd have one.
Shiren 3 Wii - 97,227
Shiren 2 DS - 99,814
Shiren 3 PSP - 31,373 (port)
Shiren 4 DS - 89,576
Shiren 5 DS - 38,266

Franchise fatigue, or was Shiren 5 just that bad?

AAA games being Japanese or Westerner are, for most of them, multi since the start of this gen, they don't give advantage to one system or the other.
As far as Japnnese game selling better on PS3 than 360 it's jsut an impression I have but impression can be misleaded hence why it was a question instead of a statement however you are implying Dark Souls did significantly better than Demon's Souls thanks to a 360 version, since it's an statement I guess you have evidence of it.
My exact words were "the number of 360-only users is too large to ignore when a western release is considered", not "Dark Souls did significantly better than Demon's Souls because there was a 360 version". If I'd meant the latter, I would have written that. There are many more factors involved.

What I was saying is that Dark Souls was PS3-exclusive in Japan. Why would From and Namco incur the extra cost and dev time involved in going multiplat if they didn't think it would result in bigger overseas profits than a PS3-only release? They're not clueless. They weren't moneyhatted. They looked at the market, previous sales, yada yada, then said "A 360 release will be worth it."

Amazon Watch: new batch of MH3U Wii U bundle sold out again in a matter of minutes, Bravely Default sold out, Project X Zone currently in stock.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.

I'm still not seeing the MH 3G HD standalone available online at any Japanese retailers. Trying to gauge demand of the hardware bundle first?

A bit late today guys. Been really busy with the new baby and the job, but here are a few impressions from this week. I usually try not to inject personal feelings in these but after looking over this post I feel it got a bit rant-y I’ll try to write a better one next week.

1. I was asked to look for Bravely Default. Well the game is at the front of the 3DS sections at stores and they have several empty boxes in a row signifying that it is a big release, also there was a small LCD TV at wanpaku showing some gameplay, but in general it was no big campaign. No posters in stores and no Kiosks. I know there is a television commercial (I saw it online) but in the 2 or so hours of primetime TV I and my wife watch everyday we have not seen it. I do not really watch Anime (at least not on television) and that might be the audience they are most targeting. Still, for a game announced and hyped at LAST Years TGS, I expected a lot more.

2. Kiosks, flyers and posters everywhere for Biohazard 6. Crazy amount of advertising. Saw 5 ads on TV for it this week and it was featured in some variety program. The movies have also been running on TV in the lead up to the game. I think they showed every one (one a week) except the newest.

3. Another retro store bites the dust. The Wanpaku in my town got rid of any game older that the PS2 and replaced the retro section with some tables so kids can play Yu-Gi-Oh. I died a little inside. That shop is where I used to buy all my PC Engine and Saturn stuff.

4. The amount of 3DS units available is above Vita in many stores. Lots and lots of launch colors are available. Still people are choosing to buy new rather than used. And of course casual fans and parents are not buying them from game shops anyway, but department stores that do not sell used units.

5. Despite the fact that the game is already out and by now off the charts, there is considerable advertising for Miku at every game store. Not sure why. Maybe just her smiling face is bringing people in? Just to keep the franchise in people minds?

6. My town must not have gotten the memo. Let me explain. I was not able to go to every game store this week but I did want to see how Wii U pre-orders were doing. As I said last week, I have seen zero hype for this thing outside of specialist publications (Famitsu and the like). But I saw picture on the Internet of posters and preorder kiosks in Tokyo and Osaka and it brought my hopes up. But it seems like my town didn’t get the memo…

Book-net: Still nothing in the way of advertising but the guy at the counter said he could take preorders if I filled out a form. The only way to even know this form exists is to ask for it…

Goody: Nothing.

Famicom Dojo (mom and pop): Too small to get in on the pre-order program and no advertising materials were sent to them from Nintendo.

Best Denki: It’s a chain so they can take pre-orders but the woman at the counter didn’t know if they had any. Maybe they sold out? Never had them? I’ll try that store again when I can talk to someone else. No advertisements in the store. But a weird hand painted calligraphy banner for Biohazard 6 hanging in the stairwell, I’ll try to snap a picture of it.

Wanpaku: Success! Sort of… No posters, no kiosk, but at the front counter there was a computer printed ad for the Wii U and the different bundles were listed. The lady at the counter asked if I wanted to pre-order. The ad said one of the bundle choices was the Monster Hunter Bundle. I asked if it was sold out and she said she didn’t know but I could fill out the pre-order for it anyway.

Jusco (department store with a game/DVD/misc electronics section): No ads. Asked the lady at the counter and she pointed to the Wii section. I said I was actually looking for the Wii U and she gave me a confused look. I loaded up a picture on my smartphone (my main communication method in general) and showed it to her. She asked me if it was a controller for the Wii. I should note at this point that she was 50-something and obviously not a gamer. She was also very nice about the whole thing and really did try to help me.

Yamada Denki: I was not able to get to this store, but the chain as a whole seems to be on the ball with Wii U stuff so thins might be the place to go in my town. I’ll try to check it when I’m on that part of town.

Mr. Max: This store doesn’t have many games but it was a great place to get a Wii or DS lite when all the other stores were sold out. No one thinks of looking there. Apparently not Nintendo either. Nothing in store about the Wii U.

Now my town is only 60,000 people (80,000 of you count the surrounding area) but I am still stunned at the total lack of.. well anything regarding the Wii U. The only explanation I can think of is that Nintendo really believe there will be an extreme shortage and they are focusing only on the big cities and will expand to dinky little towns like mine when more stock is available. Or I suppose maybe they think the system will sell itself and they don’t need to advertise until the thing is already out. Do any other JapanGAF members time outside of a major city? I would like more information. I am worried that I am living in some anomaly. Wii and DS were well advertised here. As was the Vita before it’s launch. Maybe I am expecting too much, too early?

7. I think I found a connection between the Vita and the 360. Both are considered otaku systems and both are often sold back after the otaku centered game is completed. PS3 and Wii are bought often by people who would never venture into a “game store”. If they stop using them they get put in closets rather than resell them. Take the mainstream hit the Famicom, while cleaning at my wife’s parent’s house I found a Famicom, a disk system and a bunch of games. I instantly saw a valuable discovery but to them it was just something they were not sure how to properly throw away.

8. And since the most commented on part of my last report was the Kirby Gumballs. I will close with a crowd pleaser. Here is a collage of the Dragon Quest slime flavored gum I bought. It tastes like lime with a hint of “s”.

Ok, time to sleep before the baby wakes up again.

Weird that Square Enix did not promote a game like BD.

I said fuuuuuuuuuuuuck. Hope they produce a port or it went heavier in digital/mail-order than usual or something, 'cause that's got to be a disaster otherwise, especially in the face of the Trails series producing consistent 200k+ results at this point.

Falcom seemed very pleased with first-week. Heck, the bigger second-week drop is (somewhat) due to it going out of stock at most retailers.

This could just be the joy of a total bomb getting upgraded to a poor performer, buuuut.

This or...

Nintendo World 2012 to be announced soon, "real" pre-orders to follow, including ads, people lining up and everything.

I'm guessing it's a confidence issue.

To my understanding (and well, general observation), they've been scaling back marketing for things that aren't seen as potential major hits in favor of spending more marketing money on the bigger titles.

I have to wonder if this also applies to development resources/greenlighting, given the dearth of announcements from them.

Yeah, seems like only yesterday that point #9 on one of my "reports" was that was going to propose to my wife. What does that say about me that it wasn't higher on the list?

Glad you guys like the reports. Still not sure how useful they are without hard numbers, but I enjoy writing these and I'll keep it up as long as I can.

They're useful because many of us cannot live everyday life in Japan, so we really don't know how things work there. Though in a small city, you give us nice insights about the video game market over there, and most important thing is that they're not rushed impression like "no ads for Wii U! Wii U won't sell!" but they're reasoned such that they're a pleasure to read.

It's sold out everywhere, though. Falcom is scrambling to make more copies, but it looks like they won't be shipping for another month or two. Thank goodness for digital availability when stuff like this happens.

I was wondering if we'd see this happen with a game on Vita. The DS had some games absolutely collapse due to cart production (notably SMT: Strange Journey) and it seems Sony (or their manufacturer) aren't much better. UMD's a pretty terrible format for a consumer, but for publishers? Seemingly better than carts as they're cheap, and easy to make. As you mention, luckily for Falcom there's PSN.

The comparision between FF: 4WoL and BD: FF will be interesting to follow. Not only because it will be a test to see if the formula can sell again but also to check if S-E's mid-profile games can be profitable enough to see more of them on 3DS.

I am wondering who will have the upper hand at the end. In any case, your tour in your city Vinnk tends to show that S-E has little faith in that one. And congrats for your child!

Time flies by.

It's also a real interesting case study of branding.

I still don't have high hopes for Bravely Default.

On another notes that has been discussed before, there is a strange lack of info on any 3rd party 3DS games coming out next year. Specifically early next year. I feel like we had a decent idea of January-March 2012 at this point last year. Are there any major (100k+) games scheduled for the first two months of the year at this point? I'm sure Nintendo will have something to announce soon, but the 3rd party situation on the 3DS does seem quite strange and I think Nirolak pointed this out a while ago, but I assumed TGS would have a bunch of announcements.

All should hopefully be revealed at the next Nintendo direct, and though jan and Feb are currently barren march will bring a little title called monster hunter, that might sell 100k+ possibly ;)

So far, we know about

Magi from Bandai
Vanguard! Card Battle
Dragon Ball
Layton 6 ( Spring)
MH4 ( March)
Shin Megami Tensei 4 is Spring too, right?

Probably there will be more announcements the more the time pass, not worried at all.

Just as a sort of append to what Vinnk said (even though I'm in Japan, I still enjoy reading your posts):

-Here in Osaka, Wii U reservations are plenty visible. At both Sofmaps there have been employees standing outfront holding signs that say reservations are open. At Yamada Denki they had a big sign at the front of the game floor and staff was waiting to ask me if I wanted to reserve. Sofmap also had a Wii U intro catalog that I took and it just has some basic information about the system (mostly about the tablet controller and software lineup).

-Ys Celceta is still gone. Everywhere. I haven't seen it in stock in any store (been to around 10 in the last week). Although, it looks like a new shipment just went out (Amazon restocked today and is already down to 18 left with more on the way). Obviously I can't speak for Falcom's projections when it originally started creating the game and the Vita wasn't out yet, but as for it's apparent projections as of shipping, it seems like it has done very well. Doesn't hurt that it is a very good game.

-About Bravely Default, I also find it weird that there seems to be somewhat of a lack of advertising for this game. Even at my Geo, they have a big TV showcase outfront for new games, and they were showing Project X Zone -- not Bravely Default. Strange. Also, regarding Vita Miku, the kiosks/TVs for that are still all over the place in Osaka as well.

Really? I haven't had time to check out many stores since yesterday, but the closest GEO to my place (I'm in Nagoya) had Bravely Default right out in front. It replaced the RE6 display that was there last week. Project X Zone is also right there next to it. Bravely Default was completely sold out.
I picked up my copy at a Seiyu department store(owned by Walmart) nearby. It was their last copy, but they don't have a big game section anyway (only some Wii/DS/3ds games).

Thanks, Vinnk. And don't worry about being late, especially considering there's a pretty good reason for you to be late :)

I liked a lot what Hobby did last week, with the impressions from various retailers translated. Maybe we could have the collection of first day impressions as a brand new feature like the "Vinnk Village Report". Something like "Hobby's First Day Impressions Collection", it could be good IMHO

Aaaaand a technical question: will the games installed on the various 3DS releasing in few weeks be counted by MediaCreate / EnterBrain?

Thanks! That is a good second perspective. I'm glad the Miku thing isn't just my town, but what on Earth is up with Wii U where I'm from. I am going to try to hit one of the larger cities this weekend and see how big a town needs to be for some decent WiiU stuff.

Famitsu fiscal year first-half results conference: famitsu.com/news/201210/12022707.html

- 3DS cumulative software sales are about 10 million units behind DS, launch aligned.
- 3DS 3rd party about 50%, while on the DS they were less than 30%.

Last year the big stuff was also mostly lingering pre-launch announcements (Kid Icarus, Resident Evil, MGS3, Kingdom Hearts), which might be why.

When I went to my closest Geo to get the game, there were more dummy boxes on the shelves for BD than PxZ. Not sold out, but I asked and the woman said there weren't many left. (all the boxes on the shelves are photocopied dummies for those two). Weird considering the complete lack of mainstream advertising. The FB page has got about 2,000 more likes in the last 48 hours, too. Both were 13% "off" the MRPP.
AC pre-orders were out in force too. Couple of posters up. Wii U stuff was up too, advertising pre-orders. Main focus was on MH.

EDIT: Also download cards were fewer and more expensive than at Yamada Denki. Only one hook per game (as opposed to four) and they were about 500 yen more expensive than the boxed copies, but still a little cheaper than the MRRP.
