Gov. Mitt Romney's Binder of Women - Not his idea, and not implemented well by him

From the Rush Transcript of the 10/16/12 Presidential Debate regarding a "binder" Mitt Romney apparently came up with in order to hire more women in his staff:

CROWLEY: Governor Romney, pay equity for women?

ROMNEY: Thank you. An important topic, and one which I learned a great deal about, particularly as I was serving as governor of my state, because I had the chance to pull together a cabinet and all the applicants seemed to be men.

And I -- and I went to my staff, and I said, "How come all the people for these jobs are -- are all men." They said, "Well, these are the people that have the qualifications." And I said, "Well, gosh, can't we -- can't we find some -- some women that are also qualified?"

And -- and so we -- we took a concerted effort to go out and find women who had backgrounds that could be qualified to become members of our cabinet.

I went to a number of women's groups and said, "Can you help us find folks," and they brought us whole binders full of women.

I was proud of the fact that after I staffed my Cabinet and my senior staff, that the University of New York in Albany did a survey of all 50 states, and concluded that mine had more women in senior leadership positions than any other state in America.

Now one of the reasons I was able to get so many good women to be part of that team was because of our recruiting effort.

According to this article:

Not a true story.

What actually happened was that in 2002 -- prior to the election, not even knowing yet whether it would be a Republican or Democratic administration -- a bipartisan group of women in Massachusetts formed MassGAP to address the problem of few women in senior leadership positions in state government. There were more than 40 organizations involved with the Massachusetts Women's Political Caucus (also bipartisan) as the lead sponsor.

They did the research and put together the binder full of women qualified for all the different cabinet positions, agency heads, and authorities and commissions. They presented this binder to Governor Romney when he was elected.
...according to MassGAP and MWPC, Romney did appoint 14 women out of his first 33 senior-level appointments, which is a reasonably impressive 42 percent. However, as I have reported before, those were almost all to head departments and agencies that he didn't care about -- and in some cases, that he quite specifically wanted to not really do anything. None of the senior positions Romney cared about -- budget, business development, etc. -- went to women.
Secondly, a UMass-Boston study found that the percentage of senior-level appointed positions held by women actually declined throughout the Romney administration, from 30.0% prior to his taking office, to 29.7% in July 2004, to 27.6% near the end of his term in November 2006.

tl;dr: Mitt says he had womens' groups bring "binders of women" who were qualified to work on his staff because he wanted women to be better represented in his staff. Insinuated he and his staff commissioned the binders. In reality, said binders were commissioned prior to even knowing who would be elected as governor and were presented to him after he was elected. He hired many women from the binders to departments he he didn't care about and positions where they didn't do anything. Over his term, senior-level appointed female staff positions declined from 30% before taking office to 27.6 when he left.

So Mitt told yet another completely disingenuous whopper to the American Public on national TV. But apparently Mitt and only Mitt has license to do so.

Its really upsetting that none of the Post Debate lies make any news...

Just fun memes and articles for leftists, but nothing more. I'm sure facebook is already full of "Romney Aced it again! Definitely voting for him based on this debate..and nothing else.."

If Obama told a lie this brazen in the debate, Fox News would be screaming bloody murder right now and people would be calling for him to be impeached or something.

Instead, they just find a way to say that things he said that were accurate, may not have told the whole story and that's just as bad as a bald face lie from Romney.. Love dat false equivalency.

OK we get that Mitt talking about a binder is funny hur hur hur.

But the fact that he lied like this should be serious.

Yes.

But I'm feeling that no one 'opposing' Romney even cares anymore, as that's pretty much 'business as usual'. Making fun of its stupid behavior is in that sense a more effective way to dismotivate people to vote for Mitt than taking the time to elaborately explain why so much is wrong with Romney's (intended) policies.

Mitt lies about half the shit he puts up there.

Mitt on taxes:

A. Lies about math

B. Lies about studies backing him up

Mitt on healthcare

A. Lies about pre-existing conditions

Mitt on gas prices

A. Lies about not liking high prices http://www.tnr.com/article/politics...chusetts-governor-gas-prices-renewable-energy

Mitt on Gun Control

A. Passed Assault Ban and didn't like em

Mitt on Climate Change

A. Believed in it, suddenly doesn't

Mitt on Abortion

A. Was Pro-choice, suddenly not.

B. Says he won't endorse laws against abortion, but also says he does. Says wants to also overturn roe v wade

Mitt on Immigration

A. Pro Amnesty. Suddenly not.

We can do it all night. Mitt contradicts and lies all the time. the regular media mostly lets him skate by. They'll let this skate by as well.

Of all the lies, this is one of his smaller ones. He's a joke candidate with a joke platform telling all of us a giant joke. And the media doesn't care.

Put it this way. If the media cared about Mitt's positions and lying, the election would have been over in summer. Media can't have that.

A guy on my facebook that is obscenely right wing said the debate was a tie with the breakdown being 40% romney win 37% obama 23% tie with it being a narrow Romney win in his mind...so you know that was a schoolyard beatdown for Romney if even he can't call it a stellar victory.

Candy should have forced him to answer the actual question. Mitt refuses to say he supports equal pay for equal work. Why do you hate women, Mitt?

Romney lies and bullshits, what's new? He's a very bad speaker too, he keeps speaking towards obama instead of looking at the people. he sounds like a little kid 'NO YOU'.

oh man. So looking for someone to hire because of their race is the devil's own fave activity. But looking for a specific gender is so OK you mention it in a debate?

WTF republicans?

He ended that section by completely flip-flopping and acting like he supports Planned Parenthood now.

That entire section was a disaster for him.

The great thing about Romney's personal anecdotes like this is also that they have nothing to do with the policies he wants to enact.

He can go ahead and tell one of these stories and at the end of it he still hasn't addressed the actual policy-based question.

Though I would take issue with the "post-debate lies, etc." I would MUCH rather hear news on those topis as opposed to the "binder full of women."

Can someone explain why the phrase was offensive? I took it as he was actively searching for female cabniet members and saying that many were qualified.

Can someone show me the error of my logic?

It's the idea that you need such a binder in order to find qualified women to fill your positions in the first place I believe.

Really? I thought it was some sophomoric S&M bondage joke or something. At least that's what the memes imply.
I'm sure people have riffed off on the idea many different crazy ways as memes usually go.. I haven't really been on 4chan or Facebook to keep up with it TBH.

Cable News wants to keep this election close like a horse race to rake in the ratings, they have now intent in telling the truth or fact check

Meh, I guess...

I mean, when we hire where I am, we get "binders full of resumes" to flip through and find out who we want to interview.

I guess I don't see the "outrage." (Though some of the memes are funny).

As commedieu stated, Id m.uch rather have news focus on inaccuracies of the canadites statements.

For me, while I was watching the debate, it sounded more like "Oh, shit guys, we're gonna be called on this shits, quick, get me some token women to fill in some leadership spots"

Well, for starters, your explanation is the lie. He wasn't actively searching for female cabinet members. He had a binder delivered to him by a 3rd party demanding he hire more female cabinet members.

this is one of those weird things that people think its an awesomely big deal - but to the rest of us it really doesn't mean anything.

Romney had the most females in his cabniet than any other Governer (though that did drop by the end of his term).

His "right-hand women" for the last 30 years was a women (met at Bain Capital).

I dunno, it just doesn't seem like a big deal to me, a funny meme (especially the Bill Clinton one), for sure, but that is about it.

He wanted diversity and he went out and got it. I don't see the problem. Isn't that what most of the minority groups want?

Im very confused as to this comment.

The meme results along made it worthwhile posting about :)
