Crystal Skull was all Lucas.

In a sense, yeah.

Although I wonder if Spielberg is obligated to solicit Lucas' bad advice, just due to the nature of their relationship.

There are a share of composers that could easily take up the mantle. My first two suggestions would be Michael Giacchino and Alexandre Desplat.

Bring back Marilyn Manson to do a techno-rock store a la the first Resident Evil movie!

I'm hoping for a Goofy and Jar Jar Binks comedy in which they are both shitty cops that somehow get involved in a case involving a Hutt and Ursula from Little Mermaid.

Day one.

I'm just going to throw it out there:

The rumor is that Nolan is leaving WB. Nolan is very loyal to Alan Horn, who was the head of WB until they let him go. Horn is now the head of Disney. Disney has the rights to The Prestige in North America.

Put 2 and 2 together and you get pizza.

I don't see Nolan wanting to do something like Star Wars and I don't see him as appropriate for Star Wars....

Nolan hates 3D (this WILL be a 3D film), and can't shoot fight scenes or CGI to save his life.

I like his movies, but he's the wrong call for this.

Ask yourself...what's the best space opera made in the last 20 years? Isn't it The Fifth Element? Didn't that guy in it have "a very nice hat?" search within your heart, you know it to be true.

I'm yet to see any compelling evidence as to why the new Star Wars films will be bad.

You can't say the prequel trilogy - George Lucas was heading that up and he's now unaffiliated with any creative direction.

Clone Wars TV series will have no direct link to the potential creative integrity of a new trilogy.

Disney have done a good job with The Avengers.

There's a fucking WEALTH of good Expanded Universe lore already, such as Thrawn Trilogy and Heir To The Empire. If they utilise that content, it's going to be good.

People need to stop being emotional, and start thinking. Admittedly my first reaction was "OMG THIS WILL SUCK" but after some cooling down time and logical thinking, I'm failing to see any definitive evidence as to why this will be a bad thing.

Just read the last line of the post you quoted again.

Although, how many people quote the first SW film outside of 'These aren't the droids you're looking for? We got two more Avatar films coming. Don't you worry!

Dude really?

People have been playing off that 'Use the force' theme for 35 years.

People, movies, and other pop culture have been talking backwards in a Yoda voice for 30 something years.

So many lines ive heard quoted in other media over the years, i can't even recount them all. 'I am altering the deal. Pray i dont alter it any further. ' 'i am your father'.

I mean shit there are so many. Maybe they don't get quoted or used as much in the last 5-10 years as that original trilogy has faded from public consciousness, but i know that growing up and being there when these films first hit theaters, they been quoted and referred to probably 10,000 times over the next 25 years after they were released.

When Disney announces early next year that they've bought the Bond franchise, this will all make sense.

can't argue with this. some things from star wars have ingrained themselves so well into pop culture people don't even think of them as movie references anymore.

Avatar is not at this level and never will be.

I'm actually OK with this.

He wasn't doing anything special with star wars in the first place, and I don't think I'd prefer him over anyone else for writing a new episode.

If anything, I hope this means a star wars themed park.

Exactly. It's very possible for an HD release of the original cuts. Lucas really just didn't want it to happen.

There are a number of collectors (and Lucas, supposedly) who own PRISTINE technicolor prints of the original film. In fact, there was a public screening that managed to sneak by the Empire Lucas a few years ago:

This is all on Lucas. He simply doesn't want them released. Unfortunately, I doubt this will change even with the whole acquisition. Maybe when Lucas is dead.

I'll give you 'use the force', but the other two lines come from the sequels.

And again, I'll say read that last line you quoted again. Avatar influenced the industry in other ways - mainly how films are being made the the kind of content we're seeing now. I'd say the Star Trek reboot had a small hand in the resurgence of sci-fi in Hollywood, but basically every studio and their dog wanted to make the next Avatar. Because like the original Star Wars - it was the first event movie/cultural phenomenon in years.

What are the odds that they'll completely ignore all the old EU stuff?

Given this move I'm putting money down that is what happens.

I love The Fifth Element.

Now there is something, Star Wars directed by Luc Besson.

So what's the over/under on how long until there is a remake of the original Star Wars? Right after the next trilogy is done? Or later?

I dont know if I could ever see Disney doing a "remake" of the original trilogy. My hope is this either continues after Return of the Jedi, or its a completely separate time period in the universe.

There is so much that hasn't been explored, I'd like a "reboot" that went back to the very first Jedi and the very first Sith that actually builds the foundation for the universe.

I think it is to Lucas's credit that he has great story ideas or scene ideas, and has a great visual and dramatic sensibility. However, he is often better having someone else work to bring those ideas to screen.
That's true I think. I didn't mean to suggest Lucas gets zero credit, no way. I just meant what you said in that second sentence. The film where he had other people on the screenplay and in the director's chair was by far the best in my personal opinion.

What resurgence? Sci-fi movies still mostly go to theatres to die. I wish Avatar would've saved the genre, but it's clearly not happening.

Meanwhile he's executive producing Pfister's movie for Warner Bros.

You must have a short memory. Avatar came out in 2009. Let's look at what other movies came before that:

The Matrix (1999)
Pitch Black (2000)
X-Men (2000)
A.I.: artificial intelligence (2001)
Jurassic Park III (2001)
Planet of the Apes (2001)
Vanilla Sky (2001)
Men in Black 2 (2002)
Minority Report (2002)
Resident Evil (2002)
Signs (2002)
Star Trek Nemesis (2002)
Star Wars: Attack of the Clones (2002)
Ang Lee's Hulk (2003)
Matrix Reloaded (2003)
Matrix Revolutions (2003)
Terminator 3 (2003)
Xmen 2 (2003)
Alien Vs. Predator (2004)
Butterfly Effect (2004)
The Day After Tomorrow (2004)
Chronicles of Riddick (2004)
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind (2004)
I, Robot (2004)
Spider Man 2 (2004)
Fantastic Four (2005)
Serenity (2005)
Star Wars: Revenge of the sith (2005)
War of the Worlds (2005)
Children of Men (2006)
The Fountain (2006)
Superman Returns (2006)
V for Vendetta (2006)
Xmen: the Last Stand (2006)
28 weeks later (2007)
I am legend (2007)
Spider man 3 (2007)
Sunshine (2007)
Transformers (2007)
Cloverfield (2008)
The day the earth stood still (2008)
Iron Man (2008)
Jumper (2008)
Wall-E (2008)
2012 (2009)
District 9 (2009)
GI: Joe (2009)
Moon (2009)
Star Trek (2009)
Terminator Salvation (2009)
The Time Traveler's Wife (2009)
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)
Watchmen (2009)

And those are just the major releases. If anything, you can point to the success of the Matrix for kicking off the interest in Sci-Fi, or Xmen for kicking off the comic book explosion. both of those two were FAR more influential than Avatar. Avatar is notable for pushing 3D equipment into theatres. in terms of interest in science fiction? it gets no credit whatsoever.

avatar had a lot of internal impact on Hollywood but the public? Pop culture? Little to none.

Look at the 3 years after episode iv came out. Kids were buying Star Wars merchandise like mad. Nearly every boy had Star Wars toys or Star Wars bed sheets or Star Wars comics or all of the above. Kids were dressed up as Star Wars characters every Halloween. Everyone was quoting and referencing the movie, kids, adults, politicians, celebrities, etc long after its theatrical release.

Avatar has none of that. Ask a 9 year old boy if he saw Avatar. Don't be surprised if he has no idea what that is. Ask a 9 year old boy about Star Wars in 1979? Completely different story.

Avatar completely disappeared after its theatrical run finished. That is unarguable. And the complete opposite was the case with Star Wars.

Exactly. you can even compare the impact of Jurassic Park to Avatar, and Jurassic Park kicks the shit out of it. Dinosaur interest was everywhere for YEARS.

The final 3 films were supposed to be Luke re-establishing the Jedi
order when a new threat more powerful than the emperor emerges.
Solo and Leia were also to have force bearing children that would be
a major story point in the films. Doubt this is the route they'll go
but I like what they were proposing.

2015 Films

  • Avengers 2
  • Justice League
  • Avatar 2
  • Star Wars: Episode 7
  • The Hobbit: There and Back Again(?)
  • Angry Birds: The Movie

We're gonna need a bigger box office.
