Halo 4: Review Thread

In a few months this review will look favorable compared to impressions here I'd bet.

:lol

Halogaf may be a bunch of cynical, opinionated bastards, but I doubt we will see people digging on the game for sucking due to the lack of ADS and too many open environments. That EGM review is a bunch of BS since they pass subjective opinion along like its game design fact.

These low points are openly exacerbated by the series’ staunch refusal to get with the times when it comes to game mechanics and level design, ignoring obvious enhancements like big-ticket sequences and proper iron-sights mechanics in favor of their age-old addiction to slow, methodical combat in unnecessarily large environments. And while I get that 343i was deathly afraid to come in and mess with the elements most consider Halo canon, it’s a lot to ask of us who play other games in the genre to continue to stomach a core most left behind half a decade ago. Mind you, some folks might find the videogame equivalent of being forced to eat your vegetables a comforting alternative to Microsoft putting a dash of modern in their combat, but when stacked up to Dishonored, Far Cry 3, and Black Ops II, Halo 4’s campaign feels as empty and uninspired as its strong, silent protagonist.

What is this I don't even...

I like Geoff, so maybe I feel bad for making him the DoritoPope.
However, here's the original pope hat

How can any reviewer claim that halo is behind the times and Use a COD game as an example?
Specially in reference to the campaign. WTF? do they not like AI?

cod is a dated engine but the "modern" style of play is considered having ads, perks, fast movement and xp. its dumb that even most of the press wants every game to be like that.

Ironic considering the only thing Halo 4 is missing from that list is ADS. As noted in the review itself, what Halo 4 is missing are small linear highly scripted levels.

I don't play Halo and I don't really care for the genre or series at all. However, I read the reviews and I just wanted to pop in and congratulate everyone who is a fan for getting something that was worth looking forward to. Its always reassuring when a series that switches hands that may not hold up not only does well, but to many grows as an experience. Its not for me, but it still made me happy even though I'm not a fan to see this game score so high and not die on folks who it meant so much to.

Congratulations Halo-GAF. Its good to see fans get nice things.

I wrote the review over at EGM you folks love so much, and saw the quotes from the 5/10 (which were largely spot-the-fuck-on, btw), and I'll be interested to see what folks think once 2012 has come to a close.

I loved the original Halo, and enjoyed ODST and Reach quite a bit, and even though this game looks fantastic and offers some solid MP options, I wasn't even remotely impressed with the bulk of the campaign.

We'll see what y'all think once you've actually played it, but if you're still whoopin' it up after the 8th or 9th hour of doing the same stuff, I'll be genuinely impressed.

Would you like to start by justifying this crap?

Just got a chance to watch the IGN review. Wow. That may be the best video review I've ever seen. I got goosebumps.

And the Geoff Keighley doritos gif is effing incredible.

You called for iron sights and tighter fighting spaces. LOL. Hate the story all you want. Hate the game. Don't care. But when you start openly wishing more games were more like COD, that's when I start pointing and laughing. Your review reminds me of all those stupid EGM/IGN/1UP stories that go something like, "What can Halo learn from Tetris."

You also gave Resident Evil 6 a 9.5 lol.

Here's a part of my review for Halo 4. It focuses on the dialog and the sandbox in Halo 4's campaign..

You don't understand that adding the ability to aim down the sights slows the game down. That's negligent.

And I'm not 'whooping' anything up, I've been critical of this game for months, I just don't come out saying or publishing stupid, unjustifiable bunkum.

Are you serious? Halo 4 needs to "get with the times" by adding things that nearly every other shooter has? This is the reason people like Halo. It's not another example of The Chronicles of Dudebro McSplosion that the modern shooter genre has become.

You're more than entitled to your opinions, but the way that you suggest your criticisms be addressed is preposterous.

The EGM review does call out a lot of the same problems that other reviews also call out: bland repetitive objectives in sets of threes, thin narrative and characters outside of the two leads, etc.

I don't agree with the part about how it needs to be more "modern" like COD but I think people are missing the point of reviews here: his opinion is very clearly stated and if you are someone who prefers COD-style gameplay the review text is useful. If you are someone who doesn't like COD-style gameplay and prefers classic Halo gameplay the review text is still useful.

Personally I don't need any more games to be more like COD in any way, but it is a valid opinion.

The point of a review is not to tell Halo fans that every Halo is the best Halo yet, it's to tell people what to expect in a game and help them judge if it's a game they will enjoy.

People freaking out because a reviewer expressed an opinion is inane. Whether or not you agree with that opinion doesn't make a review good or bad. The review makes it pretty clear who will enjoy the game and who won't - which is what a review should do.

Its unfair on Halo this iron sights bollocks. Iron Sights clearly change a lot of the gameplay and level design firstly. Heck, its not even needed in a Halo game! Weapons/enemies/damage work very differently.

Iron Sights has been around a long time lol, its not new so am not sure why it needs to 'get with the times'.

Welllll this is awkward

edit; Were you at least impressed with Halo 4 constantly threw you in different situations on a level to level basis and even in the middle of levels? That's one of the things that stuck out to me most in the campaign. Kept the gameplay very fresh throughout.

I think we found the sequel title to Dudebro: My Shit Is Fucked Up So I Got to Shoot/Slice You II: It's Straight-Up Dawg Time.

Can you tell us why Halo needs narrower hallways, more scripted explosions, and standing still while shooting? I'm pretty sure there's another game that provides that.
