People think Versus is the worst thing that SE is doing right now. I think it's investing all your resources on FFXIV.

Thought the thread title said 'Eidos' instead 'Enix', Came to the thread to lay down some what-the-fuckery.

Someone strap this chuckle head down and force him to watch the director's cut of this:

Yes, Enix would probably have been better off letting Square finish burning itself out and then buying IPs during the firesale... hindsight and all that.

Hmm, well Dragon Quest has been propping the company up in Japan so I don't see how they consider that a failure. Their own management has just been abysmal.

No he didn't. He stopped serving as the pointless and I'm sure constantly ignored position of Special Director in 2005, after the merger woes really started settling in.

Sorry, I should clarify. He left his position as CEO in 2001.

Squarsoft was run to the ground.
Enix bought them.
Enix IPs (basically Dragon Quest) are doing very well
Squaresoft IPs are doing dogshit

Eidos doing well so far (Deus Ex).

I don't know, "collecting monthly fees for 3 MMOs at once" sounds like a pretty good vision for a company to have.

I blame Toriyama and the word mediocrity.

At least Lord of Vermilion and other MMO's keep them floating among niche awesome handheld releases and subpar console games. Along with worthless social gaming and the awesome Eidos that pretty much is their life support.

This guy was in charge when the company had its huge ass losses and now he criticizes the only way they had to stay afloat after everything that happened when he was running it

what an asshole

basically, what nerve

Square-Enix has been awful for people who loved them for their work during the SNES/PS1/PS2 days but I'm enjoying their output since they bought Eidos so far.

Maybe he went it was a failure from Enix's side? If they didnt merge Square wouldnt exist in any way (well the IP's would probably have been bought off). The merger saved the company, how could it possibly be considered a failure

With a budget of 137 million dollars Final Fantasy: The Spirits Withing only grossed 85 million dollars worldwide. Bear in mind that on average studios earn approximately 55 percent of the final gross so Square saw approximately $47 million, add the marketing costs and we have a loss that comfortably surpasses $100 million.

Square did not remotely shoulder all the production costs alone.

Man the misinformation in this thread is out of control.

In Japan, as it has always done. And you mean Enix IP, not IPs. Star Ocean 4 was probably the worst SO of all time, and, honestly, besides DQ, Enix doesn't really have any of their old IPs doing too well. Enix doesn't really have a richness of IPs like Square does.

Yes, DQ is still worth just as much, if not more, than what it was worth 10 years and 20 years ago and FF is a shell of itself, but, in terms of catalog, Square has a much better and diverse selection of IPs.

That was what, 10 years ago? How many of the peopple involved are still with the company now? Their current losses are the current management's fault, not the team from 10 years ago. Sucks to see they're losing money when it looked like the stars were aligning to make the best studio in the world back then. I still enjoy their games, but I seem to be in the minority which doesn't do much to help them financially.

pretty much this. the blame lies on noone but the present heads of the company and a poor console development structure starting at the beginning of this gen.

The amount of series Square-Enix has fucked up the last 10 years has been astronomical. From Kingdom Hearts to Final Fantasy, Square has fucked up so badly when it comes to publishing titles. Even with IPs like Star Ocean, which had the enormously popular (by JRPG standards) entry on the PS2, they released it without any damn marketing at all in the US despite the growing fanbase for the series. Star Ocean could have been much bigger than it turned out to be, with it going from a multi-million selling series before Star Ocean 4, to basically being completely dead due to their incompetence.

Eidos fucking saved them. It should be renamed Eidos-Enix.

Yet Square does not make use of them, since FF is the only thing they think they can make.

And need I mention Toriyama the Franchise Killer? Front Mission Evolved, Parasite Eve, and now Final Fantasy.

They only thing they really screwed up with KH is the huge gap btw mainline titles in the series

The fact that SO4 was a terrible game didn't help

I agree that fucking up XIV was bad and possibly irreversible to the public, but you must not realize how much FFXI made them. MMO's that are successful print money.

They had such a good gen with the PS1. Its really tough trying to accept that Square has struggled since. It almost makes no sense to me. I damn near worshipped their RPG's that gen. I even liked play Ehrgeiz.

Versus and KH HD are the only good things SE are developing.

FFXIV will bomb hard. It will probably lose as much money as XI made them.

Yes they are, even when Eidos side is left out. Stop thinking a couple of FF games on home consoles = all of Square Enix's production.

Instead of stating yes they are, perhaps you can name titles to prove your point. Only trying to help you out here.

It's already been known that the handheld releases are generally stronger then current console releases.

The only good things are a game we know next to nothing about and an HD port collection? If we're including things we don't know very much about, we might as well include DQ11 and the new action RPG that Ichimura is working on. Also, what about DQ7 3DS?

I think the key term is developing.

I don't think in his mind games like Vampire Type 0, Bravely Default, DQ7, among others matter, and even more so if the user has a console mindset.

I don't see how it is a failure. Someone may have to explain that one to me.

For those of you missing what he's trying to say:

Square-Enidos is .3 billion behind where they were when he was the CEO (over a decade ago). That is the failure.

Basically: Square is in the position of "being dead" as they were a decade back if he didn't do the merger, however the merger is only prolonging that death march is what he's saying.

Basically it's: They're no better off than they were when I was the CEO of Square. Maybe they should really be dead?

Kinda a dick-ish thing to say, but for CEO's the long-term goal is what they're after and he isn't necessarily wrong...
