First Hitman: Absolution reviews hit

Really, with the accidents system, melee/shove ability, and a greater selection of gadgets, I'd argue it's the most complicated of the series.

Those all made the game easier though I attribute the syringe as the real cause of making it a total cakewalk. Getting Silent Assassin in Contracts or SA was hard as hell while it was comparatively very simple in Blood Money.

Also Blood Money is when all the PC roots of the series had finally been stripped out.

Can't magazines start using the whole scale from 1-10?
can we please stop saying this in every review thread
-No saving, checkpoint system is awful - even an AI glitch can lead to you having to restart the level, also doesn't save data such as disguises or items you've left, and guards killed will respawn
- Focus on (embarrassingly bad) story over gameplay
- A lot of gameplay involves you getting to a door to trigger a cutscene
- The amount of kills you have control over how they're executed is about 25%, even then it's not as expansive as Blood Money
Haha, FUCK THIS. I'm going to go find a copy of Hitman: Contracts and forget about this game.

edit: Hitman Absolution |OT| more ass than assassin

I feel like Blood Money is where they figured out where they wanted the series to be. If you don't like that so much, Contracts is a mix of Silent Assassin's gameplay with some of Blood Money's "forgivingness," i.e. moving at any speed higher than a slow walk or looking at somebody for more than 2 seconds are no longer crimes punishable by death.

The problem was that Hitman 2 (and I do mean the PC version) was an incredibly unforgiving stealth game with incredibly restrictive gameplay. 47's sneak mode was incredibly slow, it seemed completely random when you were detected or not (it probably isn't, but someone who isn't dedicated to the game won't figure that out), the aiming didn't feel reliable, and 47 is just incapable of doing anything unless he has an item specifically made for doing it. There were times where you had to just sit and wait, and you wouldn't know how long you need to wait or where to wait until you had played the mission over and over again until you pretty find the perfect route and order. In Blood Money, you can pretty much wander around the level, follow people, and figure out your route as you play rather than realizing you've irreversibly screwed up and need to keep starting over. 47 can also actually climb on and over objects rather than playing like he's on a 2d plane, in addition to all the environmental interaction you can do to create accidents.

Also, it never gets old shoving people around with 47's half-hearted push.

Deadly Shadows was a better stealth game than Dishonored to me. Chaos Theory as well.

Chaos Theory is a top-quality stealth game, so that was obvious.
Not sure about DS instead. I'd probably agree, but after replaying it recently I'm not sure... other than the claustrophobic levels, I felt like Garrett didn't control as smoothly as in the other two.
Still, as I said many times, Deus Ex is a more fair point of comparison for Dishonored.

Well, there are better stealth games than Dishonored without a doubt.
Derrick also dislikes the game itself, though.

thanks. I thought it was a amazing game personally and featured some great stealth. that's just my opinion though, I know people who thought mark of the ninja was a much better stealth game, I love both so it's never really bothered me that some thought one game didn't offer as good stealth as the other.

If I ever post something in Japanese which I don't understand, please BAN me.
I gotta say i'm really happy the next Hitman game will be developed by a new studio. I can't wait to see what they can bring to the table.

I agree. Loved both, with Dishonored being my GOTY.

I've honestly never played Thief 2. I re bought DS on Steam and it kept crashing on me, so I just said fuck it. Loved it back on the original xbox. No clue about the crashes. Human revolution wore on me by the end. I loved the atmosphere, much like Dishonored, but I'd still put DS above it overall as a proper stealth game, warts and all.

Heresy!
Just joking, obviously, but while DS is a pretty cool game, Thief 2 is IMO the greatest stealth experience ever made. You should play it.

I simply want to compare Dishonored to the Deus Ex series because they have the same style of choose-your-own-approach gameplay, which I absolutely love.
DS is probably better, but as I said it lacks the fluidity of the first two (and Dishonored).

Shitty as this sounds, I don't think I can go back to a game like 2 because of the graphics. I need them to pull me in to a degree. DS and Chaos Theory still hold up despite their age because of that leap they took beyond their predecessors for me.

I always go back and forth with liking these take your own approach styles. Usually talk it out, shoot it out or sneak past. If i deviate from one style, I feel inconsistent. It's more with me than anything. Dishonored annoyed me with relying on line of sight and disregarding shadows so halfway through I decided if I fuck up, no reloading. Just playing to get out of the situation. It let me down in a bunch of areas, but stealth mainly, just wasn't what I wanted in that game. Atmosphere was great, though.

Well, first of all there's a very light shadow mechanic in Dishonored. After some tries, I figured it works at a pretty close distance. Not really the main part of the game.
In any case, I honestly fail to see how Dishonored could bore, really. Stealth is fluid and dynamic thanks to the powers, while combat takes Dark Messiah's brillant combat system and mixes it with a Riddickesque counter system. Love it.
To each their own, I guess.

I think it's a terrible time for games in general for me as far as keeping interest. It was my most looked forward to game and just fell flat. Haven't touched anything except Curiosity on iPad since then. So...yeah.

It seems the PC Gamer review completely trainwrecked the hype train for this game, people are lashing out not just in this thread but all over the place.

Surreal how fast the consensus shifts.

Pros
- Nice looking locations
- Contracts mode is good, although not an adequate replacement of a proper Hitman game
- "One very good mission" near the end, but still not as good or as free as Blood Money

Cons
- No saving, checkpoint system is awful - even an AI glitch can lead to you having to restart the level, also doesn't save data such as disguises or items you've left, and guards killed will respawn
- Focus on (embarrassingly bad) story over gameplay
- PC performance was awful, they tried out on 3 different PCs - two can run Skyrim smoothly yet get 15fps in Hitman on minimal settings, with occasional freezes of over a second, and load times of over a minute
- A lot of gameplay involves you getting to a door to trigger a cutscene
- The amount of kills you have control over how they're executed is about 25%, even then it's not as expansive as Blood Money
- Equipment system - can't choose weapons in main missions, or carry weapons over between missions
- Guard AI is strange, they will sometimes detect you walking where commando rolling wouldn't get you detected
- "Sneak by covering your face" idea is laughable
- DRM on Contracts mode - can't play any contracts, even your own, offline

"I desperately hope the reaction is strong enough to convince the developers to change direction, because I couldn't stand to watch the series die like this"

No I think the game is solid. It's just kind of a sub par stealth game as all hybrids are.

Think of it like this. This Hitman game was basically already developed by a new studio. It says IO but most of the studio left between now and Blood Money's release. They're like Starbreeze now, living off name only.

That's a problem of the genre, I agree. As much as I love Deus Ex it can't even try to compete with Thief when it comes to stealth.
I do, however, prefer them for the liberty they give.

derrick, what did you think of mark of the ninja? I found that those of my friends who didn't like the stealth in dishonoured, loved mark of the ninja and its purist approach to stealth. those are their words, I consider stealth to be stealth, but apparently there's stealth and there's stealth.

OOOH I like this one a lot, more than mine even. This needs to happen.

Funny you bring that up I just finally went back and finished it about 10 minutes ago. It's reaaally good and a great stealth game.

It's funny that when there are early positive reviews people are all "meh, I'll wait til the REAL reviews come out" and when there's an early negative review people will be "OMG, the game suxor's!" Seriously, Does anyone here enjoy games anymore? Yeah, it will have flaws but what game doesn't? I don't like the checkpoint system or the magic pockets but I'll play around it and I'll have fun. you know, fun, something you're supposed to experience when you play a game.

well, I think I'll trust the experience of some actual hitman forum goers over early reviews, positive or negative, and from what they said it's going to be a fun hitman game. I'll get off of my soapbox now and leave you all to your nitpicking, it's what you are all good at anymore.

Derrick, you're turning me into a bitter man. I held out hope that Absolution could prove to be an evolution of Blood Money and this is what I'm rewarded with. You knew all along...

Also fuck yes to Mark of the Ninja being the best stealth game this year and in recent memory. It's awesome and I hope we get an expanded sequel.

It's not just reviews, as I said many times. The videos showed small levels and a pretty dumb disguise system. The reviews just confirmed what we already knew. Or at least me (and Derrick, of course).
