Blizzard just gave me a free copy of WoW Battlechest

Anyone else got this? It's legit.

edit: From what I'm seeing, the criteria is that you should have Diablo 3, not own WoW, plus some luck.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
This must mean that Blizzard as a company is about to die right? They're desperate now, and soon we'll see them canceling StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void.

30 day trial.
You still purchase the client though. Amazon lists its regular price at $20, so it's nice I guess...?

For context, only some Diablo 3 players are getting this. No one knows what the criteria is.
Well, on my D3, I got several classes to beat Inferno.

Conspiracy: maybe Blizzard is exploring the idea of making the older clients/expansions free.

Didn't you get the memo, HotS is officially killed project now. Not enough subscribers to fund it.

Criteria: Own and played diablo 3, doesn't have WoW registered. It may be random outside of that... I don't know a whole lot of people who have diablo 3 but not wow.

(edit) Deadly, your first few characters aren't likely to get past 2 expansions worth of content in 30 days unless you have someone helping you level grind.

Same here. Wouldn't we need to buy Cataclysm+Panda to play anyways?

No. You can play on the first expansion but you will have to download all the other expansions to connect online. You just wont benefit from what the expansions give to the people that bought them.

I got the gift as well; I was surprised because I've only sunk a couple of hours into Diablo 3.

I do own everything single Blizzard game except WoW though.

I got this as well.

Then when I tried to activate it it said I already had too many WoW codes activated on my account. I checked and for some reason I have 8 WoW Started Editions and I have no idea how they got on my account =/

I got one too. Now I actually bought the battlechest set years ago and played it but I think I had it on a different account and all. Not sure if Ill use this code yet, but maybe Ill give it a spin for old times sake and all.

Sounds fishy.

How is it fishy? They make it sound like you're special, give you 30 days and two expansion packs, make you addicted, make you pay them a monthly fee and buy the last two expansion packs.

Come on, people. This is basic marketing. Nothing unusual, strange or fishy. Battlechest is really cheap anyway.

I don't understand the confusion? Valve is giving you the razor, you just have to buy new blades for it every month.

Some of you remind me of our chihuahua. We had to stop using metal dishes for his food because every time he saw his reflection he got scared and ran away.

It's a ploy to buy more Blizzard stuff. Game's free, expansions aren't, and you'll run out of meaningful content in less than a day's worth of played time since powering through anything other than Pandaria takes no time at all.

Blizzard? Loss leaders? Naaaah.

Should be noted that the battlechest now includes the first three expansions rather than just Vanilla and Burning Crusade, and that's actually a pretty healthy chunk of content right there.

Keyword is powered through. If you're new to the game, you aren't likely to "power through" it all, especially because they'll want to try most of the classes I'd think... then again, is there anyone truly new to WoW at this point?

Eh... for newcomers, Vanilla WoW + Burning Crusade + Wrath of the Lich King is enough to keep them busy for months. Especially if they want to play multiple classes and see both factions.

If you've ever played any modern MMO, you've probably played WoW. I think it's just a question of whose coat of paint you prefer.

I do wonder at times what a Dark Souls MMO might look like. Or for that matter, a Proteus MMO. Then again, the goals of those games maybe aren't entirely conducive to being the money-making machines that MMOs are.

I got this the other day too, was wondering whether I should bother with it since I've no plans to play WoW. Maybe I should register it anyway just in case some time in the dim and distant future WoW goes free to play.

EDIT: oh, it's for the US WoW. Tried to redeem the code on EU battle.net and it told me to get bent, but if I log in on US battle.net it works.

It almost seems inevitable that they'll introduce a true F2P option for WoW at some point, if only because of the bursts they get at the launch of expansions and the drop-off a month or two after.

All things considered it wouldn't be surprising, but with the caveat that they stated they'll cease expansions after level 100 is reached. I suspect the F2P will probably come with a real money store once level 100 (whatever expansion that is) becomes a reality. Likely in the same manner that TF2 currently offers hats...

Got it, having played 5 hours of laggy Diablo 3 that always ended with me being disconnected in 5 minutes that didn't get fixed for 2 months before I gave up. So if you haven't gotten it yet, it may still very well be on the way.

Will you want thousands of people running around in dark souls?

My valor in Diablo 3 isn't enough I guess :(

Though even if they did give me this I probably wouldn't play it. It is a key though they send you? If I do get one, I'll just give it away if possible.

If you get one, do make sure which region it's for, they do seem to be region specific.

Blizz doesn't give keys, they usually associate it directly to your account. Though I wonder if the link in the e-mail is "universal" (that is, not tied to an account). I know I had an old "free month of play" sent to my wife, but I used the link and logged in with my account and claimed it there.
