WiiU - Undercooked and rushed to the market?

My expectation was that a brand new console would at the very least be as good as the current gen consoles. I'm an idiot for expecting that. It's nowhere near the quality of the PS3/360 experience. NSMBU is in HD and plays great though. So there's that.

The fact that this is still a step back from the 360/PS3 in terms of OS, online and even graphics blows my mind.

After the undercooked 3DS that I bought a year and a half ago, none of this surprises me. I'm glad I decided to hold off for a while.

So this. Getting the 3DS at launch really made me very cautious towards approaching Nintendo products with their current philosophy. I really don't know why gaf doesn't makes 3DS's problems more known and just harp on Vita instead, which imo has a stronger software lineup relative to their times out on the market.

We'll really see what happens with the WiiU next year when the PS4/720 come out

Dunno about the hardware but they clearly rushed the console to market for black Friday. The 1 gb patch is nutso

Those. Were. Not. Equivalent. Versions.

I'm saying the Wii U launch is worse. I remember the 360 launch vividly and went through 3 consoles as a result of RRoDs. I'm not talking hardware issues here, I'm talking strictly software issues.

So you are fine with a console dying three times as long you forget about buggy and cutted down launch titles like Madden 06, NBA Live 06 etc.

So yes, for you is the WiiU launch is worse. Keep forgetting and accepting dying consoles.

Consoles aren't particularly good at launch.

Hopefully Nintendo gets all of these issues sorted out in the next year (and has a new 3D Mario and Retro game out by then).

Madden 06 ran on a completely new engine on 369 and was a separately created game. Not. Equivalent.

And also there's the fact that the 360 was rendering those games at a higher resolution. However the 360 and PS3 versions of these Wii U games are every bit as HD as the Wii U games. I don't understand how you can't understand this.

Why not?

They were terrible ports on 360 and PS3 of perfectly playable PS2 and Xbox games and that was on superior hardware.

Definitely feels a bit like that given the lack of info pre-launch or info that came very late like miiverse Nintendo Direct stuff. That and the delayed, previously advertised features, and technical issues. Still not as bad as the 3ds launch with the eshop and browser and Nintendo Video among others coming 3 months after launch.

Off the top of my head, Madden for 360 was a disaster, and King Kong was so bad that Ubisoft recommended people buy the Xbox version. Couple that with the Red Ring disaster and loads of PS3's still on shelves.

Console launches always inherently have major problems. NeoGAF just fails to realize this.

From what I remember, Madden was a different game entirely, and King Kong was mostly fine. I remember it being pretty impressive visually, at the time. It used totally different models/textures/lighting than the PS2 and Xbox versions, for sure; it was the DS and PSP versions that were an utter disaster.

But yeah, not really the same thing that's happening here. The closest example would be Gun, which was ugly as sin but ran fine at the 360's launch if I remember correctly.

A unequivalent bad game is still bad. I would know, I got NCAA 2006 a few years later for the 360 for $5. It wasn't worth it. Your overall point remains valid, I guess.

As far as the topic goes, yes. Most consoles are, at least in some of the ways described in the OP. This is a bit worse than most, if failure rates aren't included. As long as my Wii U doesn't fail and there's a decent OS update by Christmas, I'm happy with it (getting it for Christmas).

Hey, if the 360 could survive its massive failure rate during its first three to four years, and the PS3 could survive a lack of compelling exclusives for a good 2 years, I'm sure Nintendo can survive a few teething pains for their new console.

Good point. While the launch is rocky at best, WiiU's 'bigger' problems seem to be on the horizon.

I was planning to pick it up in a month but that's changed to Never or when/if something truly groundbreaking is announced.

I'm annoyed by the constant updates for everything when you open any app for the first time.

Other than that, I'm happy with it.

It's been a subpar launch, not an utter failure - yet. Depending on what sales figures come though. I thought Nintendo would come out guns blazing with the slow lull of decline the Wii went through, that Nintendo had to have had a stacked lineup at launch they were ready to show off at E3 and didn't.

I'm just confused in general at Nintendo. Almost everything they do feels undercooked, even with long development cycles.

Yeah, you're probably a better source if you played it that I am since I'm just rattling from memory :p

I still think this is just typical GAF overreaction, though, in general.

Seriously though how are they going to fix one of the biggest mistakes, the day 1 patch. I guess they can put it in the newer shipments.

Definitely sounds like a pretty bad console launch, and I'm a Nintendo man. Can't say I'm not disappointed (based on internet reports, I don't own one).

I said it before, saying it again: Anyone who buys Nintendo hardware at launch is a huge sucker. I'm sure Mario is fun but nowhere near $300 worth of fun.

So he's a better source but I'm not? I had a 360 at launch, hell I even attended the Zero Hour launch event, I know everything that happened with the 360's launch, plus owned all those games. It is not equivalent to the multiplaftform games on Wii U which are the same damn version as on the PS3 and 360, and run worse.

Ports, with around a 6 month dev time, running on code built for different and older architectures. There is a reason that the first party games are not having the issues the ports are having.... Things will get better.

While the hardware certainly isn't setting the world on fire, I'm sure the games will get better when more time is spent on development. Get hype for December 10th lol.

Half that list in the OP is silly. Was anyone really expecting Nintendo to hit PS360 parity day fucking 1? Late Console ports developed by b teams (except CoD), that I think is safe to assume were largely rushed, as irefutable proof of its power? Watching people react to bandwidth numbers the majority of them don't fucking understand? This is a console launch people. Things get better from this point.

Keep on keeping on GAF.

I love you.

I might have bit if there was a Mario Galaxy/Zeld HD sequel but yeah, rather let the platform mature and have the first adopters beta test the hardware.

OS issues are always expected when launching a system. The sluggish OS will likely be fixed in the up coming months.

As for buggy third party games, these can also be patched.

But yeah, likely rushed to the market to make the holidays. Hopefully Nintendo has some big plans for the near future to re-invigorate the hype machine.

How are the load times with Nintendo games?
Hopefully this is just a third-party issue, but if Nintendoland and NSMBU also suffers from this - well, then I might cancel my Wii U pre-order.

Usual suspects doing usual schtick in here. Product launches always suck.

Or, in the words of that Moblin:

Grumble, grumble.

Nintendoland and NSMBU are great.

It's almost like there's a conspiracy to destroy non-Nintendo handhelds! Crap, you're onto us.

Out of all makers, Nintendo hardware usually takes the longest to drop its price, so there's not much of an incentive to wait if you think you're going to buy it anyway. Might as well get to know it and experience the new console launch rush.
