AKB48, sorry. A Japanese girl band, essentially.

...Yeah. Incredibly popular, sure, but not the stuff that a gaming platform should be running with as its big holiday game.

Oh, allright. Never heard of that.

I think those games will have a hard time competing with Animal Crossing though.

Praying that Soul Sacrifice and GE2 miraculously turn sales around next year.

I think it's a hard one, SS comes way to close to DQ7 and MH4 and that GE2 is coming out on PSP too. But if Vita does get a rebound and starts to sell well then its not good for 3DS, I see a lot of potential games being switched over which isn't good

So 3DS passes PS3 this season, how long did it take for the DS to pass the PS2?

took just over 3 years, but had a lot further to climb!

I don't games will be switched over for a long time even if Vita, trulys does decently e.g around 30's. These sorts of things are already planned, with there needing to be time and money to actually move over the games, combined with the prospect of selling on ios. PSP always had projects going for it a was selling reasonably decently, it'll take a while for the Vita to even acquire the the install base to warrant the investment. Where as 3DS and ios, would be the obvious choice unless there's a specific niche the Vita ends up catering better to.

Damn those Nintendo DS and Wii numbers are stupidly high. This is the first Holiday season I will get to see the numbers since I started to follow japanese sales this year.I hope to be surprised.

3DS in Japan is what is keeping Nintendo afloat it seems. These numbers are almost on par with DS - software is also catching up quite well.

It really seems that all the buzz of smartphones is hurting dedicated handhelds just in the west - how is Apple's and Samsung's penetration into the japanese market I wonder?

Nintendo must be so pleased with the number of download cards/eshop purchases made so far for Animal Crossing. I never expected it would be so huge.

Not sure garaph is updated yet but anyway, I digged a little into this site, and here it is the DS vs 3DS graphs:

linecompare.php

linecompare.php

Second graph starts on the first February month, so it will show technically the 3DS launch but not the DS launch/first holiday. As a result, it align the 1st holiday season of the 3DS with the second one of the DS. I think this setup is the more interesting. Even if the 2006 holiday is accurate too (1st holiday with the DSLite being available against the first one with the 3DSXL).
However, we can see the 3DS is doing a good run, but this holiday season will be compared to the all time record season of the DS, and this will be pretty hard to catch.

My god AC is god tier already. Let's hope it keeps the legs to go with it.

Excellent 3DS numbers, Nintendo's holidays in japan are getting started already.

Btw, MH4 comes at a good time. Sales indicate that 3G is not bringing over much more of the fanbase, and MH4 is the one in charge of that, now that it's very clear where the franchise will reside.

Other than that, it's nice to have a Vita bump, but it's like ripples in a pond..

the 3ds sure is becoming the dominant player in japan. if soul sacrifice doesn't do anything, then i think we can call this a day. good sales for the vita though. shows that people are really starved for exclusive content on the machine.

How are the WiiU Comgnet pre-orders of Mario and Monster Hunter (Nintendo Land?) compared to Wii pre-orders of Wii Sports, Wii Play and Twilight Princess?

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at people happy with the Vita sales. I guess Vita hovering around 10k would be an acceptable status quo? Remember when everybody freaked out when it went below that? lol.

The degree to which Soul Sacrifice would have to do something to make this a two-horse race is not something that is possible for just one game.

Even if it spawns a ton of imitators, they'd be in the oven for another year at least.

PSP(2011 YTD)= 1,726,928
PSP+PSV(2012)=1,309,189(-24.2%)

Looking ahead to Week 47, PSP did 33,151 in 2011.

3DS+DS(2011 YTD)=3,171,199
3DS+DS(2012 YTD)=4,041,901(+27.5%)

Looking ahead to week 47, 3DS+DS did 124,185 in 2011.

All handhelds(2011 YTD)=4,898,127
All handhelds(2012 YTD)=5,351,090 (+9.2%)

Some extra info looking ahead, total sales for 2011.
PSP=2,079,152
PSP+PSV=2,519,138(Not matching last year)

3DS=4,282,142

Vita bump likely had less to do w/ new software, more to do w/ new colors. At this point SS is nothing more than a me-too MH with a twist of its own (as they always do), and being a new IP it'd be wildly optimistic to think it can save a system tracking worse than a Dreamcast.

Is it still? It went up this week and Dreamcast was pushed by a price drop a few weeks ago - an effect that may well have leveled off by now.

Last I saw the dreamcast had a sizable lead that a 13k week wouldn't overcome. Especially when vita started selling 4k for a few weeks.

It's pretty nuts. I have to wonder though, did nintendo take digital purchases seriously before this? Because if they did, why wouldn't they want to give people a feeling of security when purchasing digital software? I hope this wakes them up and forces them to pay more attention to the eshop/VC

Animal Crossing seems to be bathing Nintendo in cash. I'm debating whether to get a physical or downloadable copy when it become available in NA.

Nice to see a bump in Vita sales even though it's only related to new colors. I'm interested to see how it does saleswise this Holiday season.

More than 3 million? hopefully. More than AC? probably not

Then how about MH4G?
That could sell more, also considering how much bigger the userbase will be by then.

Changing the subject entirely, am I the only one thinking that Nintendo doesn't want 3DS to steal the spotlight from Wii U?

In fact after Animal crossing there are not many other big titles coming, unlike last year, so maybe that has been planned on purpose.

Don't forget supply is holding it back.

And how long could supply issues last? Ideally, by the holidays, but it's not easy to foresee how/if this will affect numbers by then. It will sell tons in the end, but maybe not by march.

Speaking of which, could this problem affect other Nintendo games instead? Like, them shifting production of carts to AC (and thus lower availability of stuff like Mystery dungeon, etc.)

I don't think so. If that was the case we'd be seeing a lot more push for Wii U than 3DS, which is not the case. 3DS is simply in a comfort zone at the moment. With less games, 3DS is guaranteed to have a good holiday even if it won't match previous holiday numbers. Last year's was simply a push it needed, and it's been very useful.

Well with IE 1,2&3 being delayed that'll probably free up a couple hundred thousand at the factory

Maybe sony was right, maybe we should wait until Christmas.

All jokes aside, I had no idea how much Japan hates single colored handhelds.

eh, I think that's more due to nintendo's new MO of not announcing games until they're a quarter or two away from release. They like to spring new info on us from their nintendo directs.

Smash Bros aside, we really know basically nothing past Q2 2013 for the 3DS or Wii-U

I can see it now!

Sony: "Vita has seen its best Christmas holiday yet in Japan with over 150k units sold in December, showing that Vita has momentum and is posed to hit its stride in year 2013!"

Nintendo: "Sup bro, we sold like 300k in Xmas week"

Sony: :*(

Maybe that will happen maybe not but with lots of big 3:rd part software releasing now till next year it looks like 3DS will have another really big boost in sales!
