So that one little bit of inconvenience makes it a HUGE deal?? Obviously I'm mostly talking to people in the US who are the ones being very vehement about it and saying "I'm never buying any games digitally, even ones I can't get any other way", but I still don't see that as a huge deal even in Europe. Most electronic devices don't die within a year (that's why stores in the US push extended 1 year warranties so hard, because it's almost free money for them, such a low percentage of the people who buy them actually need them).

People are talking as if this is the worst DRM ever, as if this is as bad as games forcing you to be online to play or giving themselves root access to your Windows Kernal, but there's almost no downsides to the way Nintendo is doing this.

It's obvious you're never going to consider another position. First it's about piracy, and now it's about not being a big deal. It's fine if it means nothing to you, nintendo changing it would literally have no impact on you while improving it for others.

I play with other people, and a lot of my enjoyment comes from local multiplayer or coop, and have done so for years. Being able to take my digital stuff like my xbla titles to a friends house is a big deal to me, and not being able to do it with a wiiu will only make them not want one and me not buy anything digital.

Every other competent digital service around today allows reasonable profile migration and content management. MS, Sony, Google, and Apple all do things the complete opposite way that Nintendo has chosen.

It's a big deal for me and others. I want freedom on the console to enjoy it more.

Hi,

Have mine pre ordered on Zavvi here in the UK. Do you think they will dispatch it on Fri 30th (launch day), or do you think it will be dispatched a couple of days before to reach me on the launch date?

If companies have them in stock, it seems stupid to actually post them on launch day doesnt it?

Regarding Virtual Console on Gamepad, I actually wonder if some people will end up disappointed by it. I've noticed that stark color shifts like the edge of Mario's hat or the red-on-black Bowser logo in NSMB really make the image compression stand out, so given the color limitations of software from SNES and earlier I wonder how pristine they'll actually look. Probably the fact that they'll be scaled up from the original will hide the effect a bit, though.
lol they told me to change my Miiverse profile because I had my Xbox Live, 3DS and PSN ID's on it.
After hearing things like this and seeing their guidelines to not put identifying information in there I've been wondering how long it will be until they make an issue of my NNID being JoshuaJSlone.

So a pro controller u doesn't work in Wii games, but will the Wii Classic controller pro work in Wii u games?
It can, but whether it's actually supported is on a game by game basis.

Not sure, but I think we're all relatively concerned about having to rebuy VC games just to have gamepad support.

Oh, really? Wow, hopefully that won't be the case. The Wii U is my first venture into Nintendo's online ecosystem so fortunately I'm not vested in it in any way at this point.

On another note, I just checked my Miiverse notifications and had this post removed:

Apparently for 'sexually explicit' content. Haha. I figure it must be for my crude drawing skills more than anything else.

That reminds me, I need to add GAFers on to my friends list. My NNID is timaza, is there a list of other GAFers NNID's floating around anywhere?

Question time for the lucky ones that have a Wii.
If you plug in headphones to the gamepad will you get sound from the TV too?
If I plug in headphones to the TV will I get sound from the gamepad?
If I plug headphones in the TV and gampad will I get sound fom both?

I know stupid questions but the honey doesn't like to be disturbed with my video gaming skills while she is trying to sleep.
Thanks guys and gals 😃

Nintendo Land is a lot more fun than I would have thought at first, silly internet making me doubt this.

The multi-player stuff is the PERFECT kind of gaming for me and my fiancée.

I'm going to see how five-player modes work tonight, hopefully.

First question: yes.
Second: yes, as long as you turn the volume level on the Gamepad down to zero.
Third: I'm not sure, but I would think so.

Is it possible to wipe the WiiU back to factory fresh.

I'm getting the WiiU next friday and will need to check that it works but it's a Xmas prezzie for my kids so I'd like to be able to wipe the contents so that it looks like we're setting up the machine for the first time on Xmas day.

I am pretty sure there is a menu option in Settings for such a thing.

After luckily getting a replacement Deluxe for my DOA pre-ordered system, I have played quite a bit of Nintendo Land and messed around with the Miiverse. Wow, very good package, though NL feels a bit insubstantial, like eating appetizers instead of a full meal, but an excellent showcase of input and concepts as well as being a fun time with four others, locally. Miiverse is perhaps the greatest contribution to online since XBL in the console space, offering a real way to possibly combat the lack of community felt in P2P-based gaming where you don't run into people more publicly and with some sense of familiarity without having to make them 'friends'. We'll see if Ninty can keep it up with the moderation as there's obviously a fine line that can easily be stepped over with many false positives, though I think public messaging fair game to overly strictly moderate if the goal is pleasant vibes for anyone and everyone. Definitely a new opportunity for direct and viral marketing while allowing developers interaction with their userbase. Outside of the surround audio over optical thing, the need for faster, better OS/app loading/initialization speeds via updates, the mildly short battery life for the Gamepad is the only real issue for the system that needs to be definitely be addressed sooner than later. Also not a fan of the fact that you have to buy directly off credit card or in increments that don't build in taxes as I bought token $10 amount in the e-shop only to have to charge an additional .51 cents to card just to finalize a $9.99 purchase of Nano Assault Neo. Lame.

Overall, I have a lot of hope for this platform over the next five or so years despite it lacking against the now-ancient competition, spec-wise, this is the most powerful Ninty hardware ever and with HD as the baseline visual quality, it should be great for exclusives even if it's not so great for multi-plats.

Really wanted to grab Mario Galaxy 2 and Skyward sword, still so expensive though!
Yeah i wanted to go back and play a bunch of Wii games i never played like Mario Galaxy 1+2 and grabbed a new copy of MG1 for $20 but Galaxy 2 is still going like $40 strong :( I almost caved in but bought the Kirby 20th instead.

I don't think they will but it'd be nice if sainsburys fucked this up and sent me the console early!

Mine says the same thing, which is both a good and bad thing. It's good that Sainsburys are looking likely to send it, but bad because due to a long talk to with their customer services I was under the understanding I was not because my card expired so I ordered one elsewhere. So now I have two on the way and I REFUSE to be one of those guys charging a fortune for them on Ebay, so I guess I'll have to return the second one as the Sainsburys one is cheaper.

I had my personal website on my profile and had my profile blocked until I edited it out.

I didn't even know what the offense was at first since they didn't specify why they blocked my profile, just a simple messaged that my profile had been restricted for viewing for violating their Miiverse code of conduct. It wasn't until I went through their entire terms and conditions that I figured I most likely violated their "marketing or advertising" rule set.

Not just that but no personal info which I'm assuming also means online profiles is allowed either. I don't think they want you to setup alternate ways to have people contact you.

A mod sent me a message a few days ago telling me to edit my profile and had it blocked from public viewing. My profile was (paraphrasing) "can't wait to have VC support on gamepad!" followed by my GAF username. Seriously.

You can hit me up, my ID is countchozo; there is a Nintendo Network ID thread, just search it but it should be within the first few pages.

Do yourself a favor and don't do that. Otherwise Christmas morning is going to be spent waiting for downloads to complete, and then waiting for updates to install. Get all that shit over with before they open it, and Xmas morning will be a lot more enjoyable for them. Just scrub the users/Miis, and unless they go into the memory section within settings, they'll never know you installed all the mandatory updates ahead of time.

Has anyone had anything ship from Newegg that's WiiU related? I've been waiting for a very early pre-ordered Pro Controller. As I've watched their site, I've notived the dates slowly slipping back. First it was a week, then 12/11, and then 12/18. Now it's 12/31. I go to Target and Walmart and I see a number of them on the racks. What gives?

this is actually a damn good idea. I had patience, but if I would have had to do that at 7 years old with my NES on Christmas morning? Hell to pay.

I'm in agreement with this, and won't spend anything over $5 - $10 on the nintendo store until its fixed/modified

i find sony's to be pretty reasonable

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
$10 says my "EatChildren" account gets banned/blocked, just as it was with EA.

I had Scribblenauts ship, which I need to figure out what to do with now, gragh.

But I am in the same boat, waiting for a Pro Controller.

same problem many of us have probably, you can try the Google DNS "trick" that has been mentioned or go into your router settings and find your own DNS.

Well that blows. Doesn't seem like supply is an issue when it comes to that product in stores... And I wouldn't even care if it wasn't for the great deal I got on the price of that sucker!

I remember reading the other day about someone complaining about the sound quality with Amazon Video on Demand and he is right. The sound is muffled on Wii U. Seems like you get stereo sound only (I do have my Wii U set for surround), as on my home theater system voices and sounds only come out of the left and right speakers. I stopped the show on Wii U, started it again on PS3 and you get a full range of sound including voices where they should be on the center speaker. Hopefully Amazon fixes this with a patch ASAP.

What trick is this?

The Wii U sometimes has trouble auto-obtaining an IP, so you need to enter the info manually.

If you don't know your router's IP range, default gateway, and subnet, you can run command prompt and type "ipconfig". (Adding 10 or so to your PC's IP address is usually a safe approach to assign the Wii U an IP).

For the DNS, you can use Google DNS, or otherwise find your own in your router's status page.

So according to Gerstmann it's still easy to find Wii U in stock even after Black Friday. What IS going on?

Either demand is low or Nintendo made sure to keep stores well stocked. Doesn't matter, really. People who want one should be able to get it and that's not a bad thing.

So according to Gerstmann it's still easy to find Wii U in stock even after Black Friday. What IS going on?

Well, aside from spotty even non-existent marketing for the system and a mixed message about what it offers for such a relatively high price in a cash-strapped economy, it might be that Ninty's more aggressive shipments are helping to create a more negative impression that it's simply undesired. I imagine it's actually doing well and will put up nice numbers, compared to most worldwide launches of the past.

I can think of a couple things.

1) Nintendo has shipped a lot more Wii U consoles than Wii

2) Wii U demand is not the same as Wii

3) Economy

4) People think the Wii U is a controller add on

5) It's the basic set available that no one wants

6) People who shop on Black Friday want those $199 PS3/360 specials

I did some shopping yesterday and found Wii U in stock at Best Buy and Target. But only a couple units and they were the basic model.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.

Anecdotal reports on gaf appear mixed- some posters reporting plentiful stock, others reporting a sell out.

Absolutely easier to get one than in 2006 with the Wii, but if we believe Nintendo's statements they also shipped more.

I do think the Basic model was overshipped.

From what I've seen, getting Basics isn't a huge problem, but Deluxes are pretty tough to find. Not well allocated by Nintendo, I reckon.

It's a good point. I'll install the updates and then put it back in the box.

I've seen a lot of Wii U's (both sets) in Toronto and Mississauga. I think its harder to find Deluxes in the US though.
