Bayonetta 2 - WiiU (Director: Yusuke Hashimoto, Pub: Nintendo, Supervision:Kamiya)

They were, but people bought into the marketing for some reason. I always thought it was odd that Mario was supposed to be kiddy in comparison to Sonic. They're both bright and colourful, but Sonic is rescuing cute little animals, and Mario is trying to get some action from a Princess.

You haven't been in many sonic-gaf threads then.

Many considered classic sonic as a felix the cat type character.

I was talking more about the genesis era IP's you could see a clear difference in demographics by then, but SEGA games lost none of their colour or vibrancy in the process.

its only really this gen that mature=Dudebro/Brown/Depressing

Before you get excited, you should be reminded that this updated GameStop Wii U launch window release schedule list is likely still inaccurate overall. Aliens: Colonial Marines has a January 2014 release date while other games like Monster Hunter 3UHD is listed for April despite Capcom having stated it's been planned for March. Also, many of the other games are listed for May release despite Nintendo having said that the cut off point for launch window schedule was considered to be March.

GameStop has Bayonetta 2 listed for a May 2013 release.

I doubt Bayonetta 2 will release that early, but Reggie has teased us twice now about other launch window surprises that Nintendo has not revealed to us yet. It's just that we only saw a very brief Bayonetta 2 teaser trailer so one would assume the game is not ready to be show off in proper form.

Same day as Wonderful 101

I look forward to seeing both games at TGS this year

I don't think either game will ship before then. (Maybe Wonderful 101. but I feel we'd know ALOT more about it if it was truly launch window at this point)

Well, back in October 2010, Atsushi Inaba of Platinum Games said "There is no concrete plan or schedule that we can talk about [in response to a possible sequel]. It's not like Kamiya said, 'Okay, we're going to make this.'But Bayonetta is definitely a special IP for us. We loved creating that game. We think it was a really good game. We would love to make a sequel to it when the time is right. That's all we can say."

Hideki Kamiya, on the otherhand, felt confident when he responded to a fan's Twitter question about whether Bayonetta 2 would return. Kamiya said, "I believe so. By May 2012, Sega publically announced several unnamed projects were cancelled due to the company's restructing issues. After Bayonetta 2's Wii U announcement, Hideki Kamiya stated the following:

Even though there has been a bit of a gap since the release of the last game, but I still got lots of request for a sequel from gamers. We were secretly making one the entire time.

Needless to say, this will be one project that will be interesting to here about the details of how it came to be. One would guess that we'll eventually get an Iwata Asks on Bayonetta 2. I think we'll likely see the game at E3 next year taking into account that Nintendo doesn't regularly attend TGS.

If we even have to wait that long. Now that Nintendo is in charge of the project, they'll probably feel free to showcase it at a random Nintendo Direct before the show.

if they cant sell on ps3 or 360 they will certainly not sell on wii with the style they are going

also tbh metal gear rising looks like it will sell

wonderful 101 (which gives me a viewtiful joe kinda vibe, which i actually really love) and bayonetta 2 dont look like games that will do that well

Highly disagree that W101 doesn't look like it can sell. It has a SUPER marketable look and theme. They can go ultra cheesy superhero game, or play it straight with a semi-serious heroes vs. super giant monsters vibe, but either way, that game has "mascot IP" written all over it. People have been asking for new Nintendo characters for years, well I think it would be a huge missed opportunity for them to not try it with this game.

This thread bump makes me feel better about the doom and gloom posts plaguing the GAFverse.

Can't wait for the first in-game footage to drop.

Nintendo should bypass all of that and just drop a demo for ambassadors. No screen shots, no announcements, no videos, and no regular thursday eShop updates. Imagine loading gaf on a cool Monday evening and right at the top you see "Bayonetta 2 demo available now. Ambassadors only."

I would pay good money just to read that thread as it happened, let alone play the demo.

I expect Bayonetta 2 to look like the first one.

What does that even mean, they will not bother? Who are they? The guys at Platinum games? They have as much history on Nintendo platforms as they have on Sony platforms. And even then, they don't care about silly console wars, they only want to make the best fucking games.

Im talking about platinum and they want to sell games primarily. I dont think they have much of a chance on that front on wiiu. If nintendo moneyhats them thats a different story. But im saying nintendo shouldnt moneyhat platinum and invest on their first party releases instead

But more kid friendly. I mean, we didn't even see her face. I'm pretty sure it will be more mii-like.

I'm thinking something chibi style, no blood, and a simplified touch based combat system.

The same was true with viewtiful joe... A few years later the series is dead.

I dont want nintendo to waste their precious R&D money on lost causes. But its their call how they spend their money...

Do i personally want to purchase the game? Sure i do! I bought the first one on 360 and liked it a lot.

Not gonna lie, I'd buy the shit out of a bayo chibi spinoff. Just don't kill off the main series.

Something like this

I dont want nintendo to waste their precious R&D money on lost causes. But its their call how they spend their money...

B2 is potentially a system seller for core audiences, one of the few exclusives I can recall over the past years that would be. Besides, I doubt this portion of the money would've been ratcheted out to R&D anyway, it was probably earmarked into the publishing/third parties budget. It's like when people say 'Why did you spend so much on marketing and not the game?' - it doesn't have anything to do with the way corporations actually manage their cash.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
So much weirdness. Might as well say Nintendo shouldn't have bothered with the Super Mario Galaxies and just made a few more NSMB games for Wii since the former would never approach the latter in sales while obviously costing way more money. Appealing to niche markets has benefits too, dude. Smaller, sure, but no, it doesn't harm their ability to serve the other markets they intend to. Nintendo Land 2 and NSMBU2 in 2013 would hardly be a great idea too. Especially before even seeing how such games perform.

The same was true with viewtiful joe... A few years later the series is dead.

That has nothing to do with them being on Nintendo systems, though. Viewtiful Joe sold nearly six times as much on GCN than it did on PS2. Unless your point is "Clover alumni are destined to forever fall short sales-wise and should just not bother making games at all"?

Why on Earth do you give a shit about how Nintendo spends money, especially when it's on games that will very likely be some of the best games to ever grace Wii U? Are you dumb?

Nintendo is a company of certain size, there's a limit in how much they can put money in their own game development (without having to expand, which isn't always the best decision, in the long run).

And again, we'd like to see that crystall ball of yours, since you seem to already know that Bayonetta 2 will certainly fail. It's not a lost cause at all and not everything Nintendo puts money on needs to be another Mario, sales-wise.

Yeah but Capcpom's dumb. If Nintendo wants to make something out of the W101 brand, I truly think they have an opportunity here. A few CG "character introduction" trailers, good marketing, get them in Smash Bros 4...baby, you got a stew goin'.

because nintendo could take that money and make the games that are actually selling a lot better

imagine wii sports resort with each mode having a lot more content (for example the skysports mode alone to have content equivalent to pilot wings resort). i adore those games but they also could make them a lot beefier more jampacked etc.

also yes i do think nintendo needs to grow with the strategy they have. their strategy is to be a full content provider for a platform. they can do that if the platform has a userbase like gamecube but they cannot if they have a userbase like wii. since they are totally capable of selling numbers like wii or ds they should definately aim to release such variety of games on their own to pretty much satisfy most of the gamers tastes rather than supporting third parties that will jump ship the first opportunity they find

Farnham, you have to realize that nobody here is going to agree with the case you're making in here and in the Zelda thread. Very few people here are going to prefer a fully fleshed out Wii Sports game over a new entry in the Zelda or Metroid series, regardless of how they sell. I'm sorry that you're a bigger fan of Nintendo's minigame collections and sales numbers than their core IPs. You're just not going to convince many people to jump on that bandwagon.

i am aware that i cannot convince other nintendo fans. but to be honest if nintendo would have just released the same shit over again with a new coat of paint like they did on the GC (with some notable exceptions mind you) i would have stopped gaming with the Wii generation.

games like wiisports made me buy those and made me continue to buy those old games with a new coat of paint too...

I hope these kind of third party exclusives are given proper breathing room to allow for a decent marketing push.

With the future of 3rd party titles on the system looking as shaky as it does, I believe it's key to ensure each legitimate one is ensured a decent success. At least early on in the system's life anyway.

One of these things requires development staff. The other requires throwing money at Platinum.

Nintendo doesn't employ an unlimited amount of people. If they want to provide quality software for two different platforms, they need to contract out to other studios sometimes. This is a quality game from one of the best developers in the industry that will cause a segment of the market to buy systems they'd otherwise pass on. And because of previous sales issues, they would actually owe a lot to Nintendo if their games do well.

This is a great, relatively-low risk business decision for Nintendo, and the only arguments against it I'm seeing from you are based on incredibly broad generalizations.

1. nintendo needs to employ more people and needs to expand their teams. they cannot compete with all third parties at once content wise manpower wise. if you look at the market situation however its nintendo vs. sony and thirdparties vs. ms and third parties. nintendo needs to equalize their lacking third party support (lets dont kid ourselves third party relations will never improve unless nintendo completely abandons first party game development. which would be suicide) with more manpower. this costs money
2. platinum, like any other third party, will abandon ship at the first opportunity they see (which is their good right) as they have better chances to sell games competing against other third parties than competing against a juggernaut like nintendo on a platform that is extremely nintendo centric.

so in conclusion i never said this is not a quality game. i do think however its better to invest in more employees than throwing money at a development studio that will jump ship as soon as they can.

As someone who is unfortunately saddled with ps3 bayonetta, my only hope for this title is 60fps ;A;

on wiiu...? people seem to have problems in getting consitant 30 fps. but as i said platinum will abandon ship once they get on foot financially or find other publishers anyways.

wii__ titles were fresh new experiences while old nintendo franchises got more and more stale up to the gc and to a certain extent with the wii as well... zelda for example did not change dramatically since oot.

I'm not sure why you're buying into literally every self-defeating myth about Nintendo. They only reach Nintendo hardcores, kids, and grandmas, third parties can't sell on the platform, Nintendo has to produce everything for everyone on their platform... Why?

The Wii U is a new machine. Nothing is set in stone. Nintendo games will obviously sell well there, but other companies can succeed if they put out the right product. It happened on the Wii, and it'll happen here. If Nintendo wants to encourage a healthy developer ecosystem, they need to take the initiative to show that their platform can work for others. If that requires funding some games, then so be it.

If Platinum leaves, they leave, and Nintendo still gets their game. If the game is successful, Platinum has good incentive to stick around. It's low-risk (much lower risk then hiring up a new studio), with some nice potential upside.

And why on Earth would they have to do things that way? As a gamer, you should be happy that they saved a potentially GOTG-level game that was cancelled by its original publisher. That's all that matters.

imagine wii sports resort with each mode having a lot more content (for example the skysports mode alone to have content equivalent to pilot wings resort). i adore those games but they also could make them a lot beefier more jampacked etc.
Dear Beelzebub, no, Nintendo doesn't need to put any more money on WiiSports.

Also, Nintendo publishing Bayonetta 2 is IN NO WAY money away from shit like WiiSports. Game projects have budgets that are decided independently from other projects. It doesn't mean Nintendo will spend less money on Zelda Wii U just because they decided to pick up Bayonetta 2. Game publishing & development simply doesn't work that way.

also yes i do think nintendo needs to grow with the strategy they have. their strategy is to be a full content provider for a platform. they can do that if the platform has a userbase like gamecube but they cannot if they have a userbase like wii. since they are totally capable of selling numbers like wii or ds they should definately aim to release such variety of games on their own to pretty much satisfy most of the gamers tastes rather than supporting third parties that will jump ship the first opportunity they find
Sure, they could use a bit of growing (and AFAIK, they actually have hired more people), but that doesn't mean they should not pursue any cooperation with 3rd parties. The fact is, they can't survive with 1st party efforts alone. I certainly wouldn't have purchased any Nintendo platform if I knew I'd only be getting games developed by their own teams, stuff like Sin & Punishment 2, Little King's Story, Muramasa etc. were more of a reason to own a Wii for me than Nintendo developed games (and I LOVE Donkey Kong Country Returns, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Xenoblade & the like).
