Considering the confusion there seems to be around the Wii U, I don't think releasing a 3rd "Wii ___" console with a different name would be a good idea.

Right, but they could still make one and keep calling it "Wii." It's not like Sony actually called the "PS2 Slim" the "PS2 Slim." It was PlayStation 2. But that's also why I think the rumor leans on the false side.

They can make with HDMI and HD output, for Netflix and other video services. But not upscaling the old games, of course!
That would still make it Not A Wii. Netflix and YouTube are just Wii programs. Doing something extensive like that would not be a priority for a late-life cheapie model.

Nintendo is probably the last company I'd buy a digital download-only hardware from.
Seeing how the next PS and Xbox will probably lack BC I'd rather buy from Nintendo because they, at least, gave me a way to have all my Wiiware/VC games on my U. I highly doubt MS or Sony will do the same.

you can't put a price on sparks
Yeah, a year ago Nintendo revamped the Wii to make it horizontal only and at the same time removed Gamecube compatibility.

i totally missed out on that. or maybe i just dont remember.

makes me absolutely not want to buy a Wii now even for dirt cheap.

Has nintendo ever redesigned a (home) console and not made it worse?

NES -> new model only supports RF and has issues with that
SNES -> S-Video removed
Gamecube -> Removed D-Terminal port (component video)
Wii -> gamecube compatibility (and the horiziontal thing, which I didn't know)

It's pretty annoying

When they crammed the Famicom into the same casing as the toaster NES, it got the SNES-GCN AV multi out rather than an RF connector.

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
Has anyone entertained the possibility that this system will have a built in hard-drive instead of a dvd-drive? And with the Digital Download platform they are rolling out, they will include the full Wii library for this new version?

Um, why wouldn't Microsoft? BC will likely be easy enough for them (unlike PS3 to PS4 from what the rumours say) and 360 has partial BC ..

Panasonic did that, so it doesn't count.

My Gamecube discs go in and I play them. It counts. :p

You lucky man, I had the opportunity to have one once but I chocked for financial reasons.

Well, I think you made a wise choice. It's a totally superfluous purchase so if you need the cash, don't do it.

I'm really torn over picking up a Sharp Famicom Titler that's on ebay right now.

At $2,000, that's really pricey for a vintage NES... But it's a NES with a touch screen and S-Video (and RGB)! lol

While I'm skeptical, an idea occurred to me...

Could Nintendo make a dinky Wii with HDMI and HD -just- for streaming video purposes?

I don't think it's necessarily possible, but I could see a rejiggered Wii as a cheap streaming box with Netflix, Hulu, and Youtube... perhaps even an Amazon Video app.

Annoying, maybe, but the good thing is the old ones still exist!!

Nintendo really should have figured out how to make GC games work with the Classic Controller and internal memory long ago.
They should have, but as you can see with Wii compatibility in Wii U, they're actually moving backwards.

does anyone know how well the snes junior sold?
Based on shipment numbers from around the time of its release compared to several years later, probably somewhere around 3 million.

This would essentially be designing an alternate backwards compatible successor to Wii, one that allows new software to output at high resolutions.

Does the Wii even have enough power to render 720p much less 1080p video?

I was thinking during my drive home from work...

This could be Dreamcast shaped (but much less chunky), and even have four ports on the front for GC. This won't happen, but it would be rad.

If it's $99 I'll pick one up. My launch Wii is starting to die and I'm not ready to step up to a Wii U yet. I doubt it'll be that cheap though. :(
