Is it a UK model you've got?

What can you actually do with TV control? Just change volume, switch video inputs and turn the set on and off? Or can you change channels on satellite receivers like Sky+ too?

(I was sort of looking forward to downloading the update. Which sounds stupid even to me.)

When I connected the Wii U to my WLAN network it started searching for the update and said: Your console is up to date or something like that.

So far I have only tested it with basic functions, meaning switching channels, adjusting the volume and changing the inputs of the TV (so HDMI 1, 2 etc.).

My Wii U is from Austria.

EDIT: GUYS! We should still be sceptical. Maybe the update will go live on the 30th :(

There is no eShop on my Wii U. I only have Youtube and Love Film.

Right... so the EU update just isn't live yet.

Argh, I hope Media Markt also has that 326€ for the Deluxe version deal in Germany. And of course also that 50% off the second game thing.
Come on Media Markt, don't let me down ^^

Edit: Wow, actually pretty good prices for the games too. About half the games for 55€ and the rest 50 or 45€..

Sorry for the false hope! When trying to use YouTube it says that an active internet connection is required to use the app, but I am connected. So nothing is live yet.

We will probably all have to update the system at launch!

Could you create an account, though?

Youtube, Hulu Plus and Amazon Instant Video updated separately from the main update, so y'all are probably still good.

Yeah this aint working yet :)
I can't connect to the Nintendo ID because the console needs to be updated - the update tells me there is no update.

Report: GameStop Cancelling Wii U Waiting List

As expected, the Wii U is pretty much sold out at all retailers. While Nintendo is doing the best they can to meet the demand and avoid the shortages that the Wii sold, it’s undoubtedly going to be a long wait for many consumers. GameStop, having experienced the problem of taking more pre-order requests than what they could commit to, had previously attempted to alleviate the shortage problems by opening up a “waiting list” SKU.

Once more Wii U units arrived in store, those on the waiting list would be called, and they would have an opportunity to come pick up their Wii U similar to a normal reserve for a limited time. However, likely due to the extreme demand for the system, local GameStop management has confirmed that company is discontinuing the waiting list. Read on for the details.

With such a high number of pre-orders for the Wii U, there’s simply no way retailers like GameStop can keep up with the demand at this point. GameStop’s waiting list SKU was meant to help people make sure they could get the console as soon as it became available again, but the demand is too great even for that strategy. If you are on the Wii U waiting list and you have not already received a call from GameStop informing you of the change, you likely will soon, as the Wii U will soon only be available on a first come first serve basis.

At this time GameStop employees are being told by Nintendo representatives that they are not to speculate on when the system will become available again. That said, Nintendo itself has stated that they are going to try to restock shelves as soon as possible, and there will be more Wii U systems available before Christmas hits. If you aren’t among those fortunate enough to get your pre-order in before the Wii U sold out, you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled.

After a week or so after launch, I've read a bunch of reviews - latest games being ranked on Metacritics are Blops2 and Assassin's creed - but I haven't heard anything about digital-only games such as Little inferno, Nano assault and so on.

How have said games been received from early-adopters so far?

Yeah, you will need the 1gb update. It made the US Wii U's version 2.0.0.

Sorry, UK/Europe.

I think Japan might get lucky and have it preflashed, since they're still weeks away.

this is so confusing in the Nintendo sold 1.2 million hardware last week thread no one believes the thing is sold out many report seeing some around. But now GamStop is cancelling the waiting list program because they cannot get a new shipment?

They speculated the "why."

However, likely due to the extreme demand for the system, local GameStop management has confirmed that company is discontinuing the waiting list.

And they also quoted Reggie's "nearly sold out" statement.. which for the most part, people know to be an exageration.. considering the plethora of Wii-U's available at retail.. also evidenced by the Ebay prices for the thing.. which are only getting $25-50 above retail.. many aren't even selling at "Buy it now" prices in that range.

GameStop COULD BE having supply problems themselves.. but that would be because they are just one of many retailers.. and probably the main retailer for Pre-orders.. but that hasn't really been verified.

They might have cancelled the "waiting list" SKU because so many people on the list had already purchased a Wii-U from one of the retailers that have had plenty of stock for instance.. so no new "waiting list" customers.. the entire point of that is to just have good customer service.. I wouldn't be shocked if GameStops were just telling people to go to another store.. they are pretty cool like that.. I've had GameStop managers inform me that stock was plentiful elsewhere for various items.

edit: I'm seeing others claim that they've called GameStops who have told them they have several Wii-U's in stock for sale.. could also be why the waiting list SKU was cancelled.. plenty of stock.

I have an Onkyo ONTXSR605S TX-SR605S Home Theater Receiver (Silver) that I ordered back in '08. It's been an awesome receiver and it has two HDMI inputs, and I think it will support surround sound from the WiiU, but my problem is that it doesn't support 1080P output and I have a 1080P TV set, so my question is essentially this:

Would I notice a huge difference passing HDMI through the receiver and displaying in 720p instead of 1080p since the games are all being natively rendered around 720p anyways? I feel like any small IQ sacrifice would be worth the gains in sound, right? As of right now I'm going HDMI straight to the TV and then Optic to the receiver and I understand I'm only getting stereo sound at this point.

TL;DR: 720p with 5.1 or 1080p with Stereo?

I recorded the intro of Nintendo Land plus Balloon Trip in 720p60, but the file size is rather huge (544 MB). You should be able to download the file without an account and fullspeed (hosted on Rapidshare). I will play around with the bitrate, currently it's set to 10 MB. DL here. I also have it on YT but of course only 30fps and I am only running around in the plaza.

Edit: 720p with 5.1! Most games will probably run in 720p and sometimes lower, so go for the better sound in that case!

Your TV will upscale the image instead of the Wii U. You might not even notice a difference.

You don't need people telling you that they see them in stores. All you need to do is check store availability online. Half the Targets in my area (there's about 12 of them) have one or both of the models of Wii U available for purchase right now. There's no need to rely on anecdotal evidence when real evidence is so readily available. You'll know Wii Us are near impossible to acquire when the prices of Wii Us on Amazon rise. Right now they're falling.

The in-store availability that the website shows is not accurate.

Wii Us are not impossible to find like the Wii was, but if you want one and don't want to risk wasting your time it's going to involve a phone call and talking to an actual human being.

People aren't picking up their wait listed wiiUs. They can't get new WiiUs in stock unless stock is depleted. People that come in to the store can't get a wii because they're all being held for the waitlist people...who aren't picking up the consoles.

That being said, I was able to walk in to wal-mart and grab a basic model no problem. They have had them in stock each time I've went (3 times in the past week).

About the situation in Europe: I have had the Wii U for two weeks now (press), and there's no update. Contacted Nintendo and all they say is wait for launch day. So I don't know for sure if there'll be an update or not but my guess is there will be.

Also, yes, in all Media Markts in the netherlands you can get the second game for half price.

ah that clears up the reason. If people wanted on bad enough to be on a waiting list they might have gone to Target or Walmart and found one already.

Well his point was to ignore what people are saying and check stores.

But all evidence suggests that the articles claiming super short supply are misleading.

Which is good for perspective buyers to know.. don't resort to Ebay or amazon 3rd party sellers.. check stores.

Calling in stores is almost as inaccurate as those sites.

A lot of people who answers these phones at retail will lie to your face and tell you they have something just so they don't have to check, it's happened to me i can't count how many times. Smaller stores it doesn't happen so much but places like Wal-Mart are notorious for telling you they have something they can just get off the phone.
