Destiny (Bungie MMOFPS, 360/PS3) Story Details, Concept Art Leaked [Up2: More Info]

What? Last year's VGAs were better than this year's E3.

But I also hope we will see Destiny

Last year's VGA show was awful. There was what? Miyamoto, Deadmau5, 45 seconds of Star Wars 1313, and a hilarious trailer for Revengeance, and Last of Us being the only thing to stand out to me.

Not to go too off topic, but I remember a lot of people anxiously awaiting Bungie's last VGA appearance(being Reach) with lots of excitement. They sure as hell know how to put out a great trailer.

At least they changed the mask.

Edit: Ah okay, not official.

Well, it's probably official, but contractor art that might not actually match the final product fully.

Like if you look at Massive Black's art for Bayonetta it's way different than the final design.

That would make sense.

Here were their designs for example, when Sega and Platinum were still considering how the character would look:

bayonetta2a-867x700v7kez.jpg

bayonetta1a-900x620dojm5.jpg

The top middle one seems the closest to what they ended up with.

quoting for people to see on new page.

IGN should fix that ASAP, don't want this to turn into a mess.

I added it to the OP as well a little while back.

I wouldn't take the contract as cast iron given how long ago it was, but yes, they were only going to make a PS3 version if they found it technologically feasible at the quality level they wanted, since MMOs are memory heavy and the PS3 has latency there.

Contracts don't...get old though.

So how does that work, they give a basic trait outline of a character and they just mock some stuff up? (Like saying Character need to have: Etc etc etc)

I'm asking because I have no clue how that sort of thing works.

(Also edited my post so it doesn't get misquoted.)

Well, that was a cylinder, wasn't it?

Yeah, I mean conceptually as opposed to visually:

IGN said:
A massive, mysterious alien ship hangs overhead like a second Moon. No one knows where it came from or what it’s here for, but only that it’s our protector.

Wikipedia said:
Rendezvous with Rama is a novel by Arthur C. Clarke first published in 1972. Set in the 22nd century, the story involves a 50-kilometre (31 mi) cylindrical alien starship that enters Earth's solar system. The story is told from the point of view of a group of human explorers, who intercept the ship in an attempt to unlock its mysteries.

MMOFPS eh? Wonder how it'll measure up to Planetside 2 since that's the game to beat right now.
Planetside 2 is pretty bad imo. Shooting mechanics, weapons, objectives, spawning system are all bad to disappointing. Add to that jank, bugs, lag, bad graphics. I'd take Battlefield 3 over Planetside 2 any day for the large scale fps battle fix. Sure P2 has more people on a single server, but who cares really if the game plays like that.

Yeah, that's a pretty good short summary.

Here's a more explicit one for Cole from Infamous: http://massiveblack.com/mbwp/?p=713

Contracts don't...get old though.

They do get amended however.

These are all a billion times better than that lanky freak the final game ended up with.

Well then...

I've been digging at the Destiny IP for a couple of years now. That doesn't make a ton of sense, I know.

I've been theorizing on the plot for this IP, and this leak has the general concept, but not what I was waiting for. Oh, well!

Anyways, this is what I've been working on.

The reader's digest version:
Marathon had Durandal, paralleling Count Roland.
Halo had Cortana, paralleling Ogier the Dane.
Destiny will have Joyeuse. It will parallel the story of Charlemagne.

Needless to say, I just about shit myself.

This looks amazing from the art. It has this wonder to it and just wow. I cannot wait for this. I really hope it's still planned for next-gen as well. That would sell me on Xbox 720 no doubt.

Ah I see. Ya it would be weird though for them to ammend out the desire to have a good PS3 version you would think.
But who knows! I am just happy its coming to the 720 or any next gen right away.
Looks like whatever Xbox next, 720, Durango, its gonna have this going for it.

I don't think they amended the desire to have a good PS3 version, but rather that the PS3 version would come at minimum one year late.

I wonder if they amended it so that the current gen versions come out at the same day but the next-gen version is Xbox 3 exclusive (timed or otherwise).

Gotcha.

I wonder if they would have to pay MS back for that? I am assuming there was a money exchange to make such a distinction.
Though I love Halo 4, this really does make me happy to see and read about.

Is there any reason to think it was amended at all? Or is that just wishful thinking? Sorry I didn't see if there was a specific thing to make this change even something to consider right now.

It's possible.

I mean, they could have amended it to just about anything. It's just that we're unlikely to ever know something more in that realm until E3, since it's the kind of detail that leaks less often.

Yeah, there's often a buyout fee with these things, but since Microsoft and Activision have a great relationship, they might have just released the contract to keep that going in a very happy manner.

I mean, even for multiplatform, unattached shooters like Borderlands you see a huge Xbox skew to the sales, so there might not even be much point in having it as an exclusive.

So none of this is official art? :(
Still a bit grey in places but if they bring those colours into this gen then ama happy bunny.

The piece in the first post is directly from Bungie.

The rest was likely made for Bungie (perhaps by Massive Black since they're listed as a client, yet the only Halo product I see on Massive Black's list is Halo Online) to help conceptualize the universe before they settled on the style seen in the top piece.

Like IGN said, these seem to be test run mock ups for adverts or magazine articles. I think the art itself is legit (well, duh), but it was just edited for shits and giggles.

Ya I am just wondering how this came up? I keep looking back and am not seeing anything indicating there would be a reason to assume something was amended. You know what I mean? It just seems odd to even bring up. But I may be missing it. Lots of posts of excited peeps!

Not really. Bayonetta is freaky, but she's also extremely memorable.

That aside,

the art (official piece and contractor pieces) are looking pretty gobstopping.

I sense Bungie is channeling a bit of Studio Ghbili with those shots.

A bit of Howl's moving castle and Nausicaa Valley of the Wind.

It'd be pretty ace to have an MMO where there's a variety of scales traversing the same landscape... fight troop battles, get into vehicles, then into massive land and air platforms and walkers.

There's room for pure imagination here.

Wonder why they picked 360/PS3 instead of the next-gen consoles? I mean this will probably be coming out right as XBOX 4 releases if not later.

PS3/360 are the only consoles that are locked in for release. I'd say 720 at launch is a very real possibility, but they can't exactly spill the beans before the console is announced.

i dont like MMOs but I love Bungie. FML

Think more Borderlands or Demon's Souls than WoW.

Oh okay. I like the orange on the tank at least. Seems like their going for very foreboding and a dangerous feel to it. As oppose to the more adventurous stuff you might expect in other MMO's. Which does fit the FPS side to things; more planning up front/in the action as oppose to heavy pre-planning.

I hope its not on this gens consoles....ive seen enough of what bugine can do on the 360 and its not pretty IMO.

Save this for a launch game or launch window for next gen. Would sell systems

Well they state right in the contract its for the next Xbox.

Thank god!

After talking to a friend at bungie, he said they're not calling it an MMO. And now that i think of it, no one from bungie has called it an MMO either.
it has a persistant online, social, and a multiplayer focus, but not an mmo. Perhaps its more like guildwars, where there's some questing mechanic or something.
