PlayStation Omni? I'm not believing the rumor, but that's just a weird name. Vita sounds nice, but Omni doesn't in my opinion.

Omniscient does mean having unlimited knowledge, so PS4 will be the smartest console of next geneation?

I don't know what's up with Evolution studios, the people behind Motostorm franchise though. They got smashed in sales for Apocalypse because monumentally unfortunate timing.

I expect something special from them for next gen considering that they hired Ged Talbot, one of the lead designers on PGR3 and PGR4.

And finally we have PD. Expect a GT6 Prologue by 2015 at the latest. Yamauchi san doesn't give a rats ass about schedules because he knows his game will sell.

I know everyone likes to joke about GT release dates, but I really doubt that it's going to take to 2015. 2014 seems solid with some sort of preview next year. They've been working on the game since before GT5 was released.

I just hope Sony learns from Vita and PS3 and realizes the pricing realities of a market still dealing with a middling economic situation.

If they put a lot of power under the hood and end up with a system they can't price lower than $450 or something, it's going to be a pointless endeavor as the platform crashes and burns :p

Omni is a sick name

i expect both microsoft and sony platforms to be $499 at least. i would honestly be surprised if either went for lower. they're not going to be just consoles anymore, but media/entertainment hubs.

Xbox will be first and foremost. I can't see Sony going that same route with the abundance of IPs that they have.

No way PS4 will be a little better than Wii U in power. This is Sony.

what does it being sony have anything to do with it?

the PS1 was the weakest console of its gen.

The PS2 was the second weakest console of its gen.

Sony made a shit ton of money from those two gens and had the most consoles sold.

The one gen they actually push hardware, they are in third place and have lost a shit ton of money.

Why do people forget that this generation is the first generation Sony went balls out on hardware.

Crazy talk.

No matter which way you spin it, the PS1 was not weaker than the CD32, 3D0, Jaguar, Saturn etc. The only console that generation more powerful was the N64.

People don't forget. Your statement just isn't true. At time of release, both the PS1 and PS2 were cutting edge pieces of hardware. More so than the PS3, I'd argue.

I'm pretty sure the shit ton of money lost was in great part because of the other areas of entertainment sony is involved with, and not because of the playstation share of it. But yeah, on topic, I don't see Sony or MS going easy against Nintendo on the technical/graphics aspect. There will probably be a considerable difference. At least thats what I expect.

I really hope they're smarter than that because a market with little competition is a bad thing... but I guess time will tell :p

The PS2 was a bandwidth monster.

When the PSone and PS2 were released they were the most powerful consoles on the market. They made a big deal of the tech with the PS2. Don't you remember the Emotion Engine?

meh, they'll probably both use a 2 SKU approach at the least. I would guess 399/449 for the pricing.

I think if they get in at 400 they can recover over a generation. I hope they don't have anything over 400, though. I mean realistically a line has to be drawn somewhere.

Because it's not true at all. There is some serious revisionist history in that post. ps1/2 were very powerful when they were released and was sold on power. I specifically remember Phil Harrison touting the emotion engine in the ps2, how much polygons it could push, etc. The reason it wasn't as strong as the rest is because the competition released their consoles 18-24 months later. Which is an eternity in tech.

The main difference in the ps3 was the blu ray. Which unlike the ps1/2 media drive. It was ridiculously expensive. The philosophy of all three consoles were the same. Media capabilities (cd/dvd/blu ray) customized powerful hardware(Emotion Engine, Cell,) and games.

Bandwidth plays a huge part in power.

The Xbox's major weakness was that it couldn't match the fillrate of the PS2. So a game like ZOE2 would be a slideshow on Xbox without some significant omissions.

I remember the MGS2: Substance Xbox port specifically suffered during the rain portions of the tanker level.

Dat fillrate and dat transparent alphas.

I still expect the ceiling price for the PS4 to be $400. I know people point to the Wii U's price, but I don't think Sony is going to ship a $170 controller with the PS4. So all the additional cost would go into more advance hardware.

You got to be kidding me? That's not true is it?

Having said that, it just occurs to me, that people went out and bought kinects in a hurry.
Maybe Nintendo should had released the gamepad like wii fit or something. I could have seen myself buying a wiiu with the pro controller for a $199.

Ugh, can't find the quote about Sony and launch time frames.

*Edit*

I'm like a good 87% sure I didn't imagine it lol.

This is all i've seen them say

I think, if you look back at history we’ve never been first, we’ve never been cheapest, it’s about being best. And I think if you can build a better machine and it’s gonna come out a little bit later, that’s better than rushing something to market that’s gonna run out of gas for the long term. I think, ideally, in a perfect world, you want the best machine that ships first, that’s the cheapest. But the number one goal is to have the best machine, and that’s what we’re always focused on. - Tretton

Speaking to Eurogamer TV this afternoon at a press event for PlayStation Vita in London, Ryan, who stepped up to the SCEE top job in the summer, said: "I think we would consider it undesirable to be significantly later than the competition [with the next PlayStation]."

Indeed, also there's a huge pshychological gap between 399 and 400+. They'd be loco to launch at 499. STRAIGHT loco.

I think they should have a top 1% tier console as well, though I'm fairly sure they will go the two tier route.

I can't be bothered to find my earlier post. :p

C'mon now, if were a grown up back then you would know that when the PS1 came out it was absolutely the shit and trashed all other 32bit consoles out there. The N64 came out much later, it was already game over.

In 2000, the PS2 absolutely trounced the Dreamcast, it didn't matter what Xbox ou Gamecube did after, because once again, they were too late.

The only problem with the PS3 was the bluray thing, it could have been released in 2005 if is wasn't for that.

There's no way the PS4 will be a mediocre machine. If they abandon this, they are not Sony anymore.

It remains to be seen if this is the right move or how much it will cost them, but please, don't be silly.

Yeah, $400 is the ceiling I expect too. I think Sony is at least smart enough to not replicate the prices that drove PS3 into the ground early on.

I think Microsoft will be the interesting one here. It's going to have the next-gen Kinect tech built-in from the start, right? So if you add that into the package alongside a moderately competent technical package, things can start to get quite expensive indeed...

So you expect the PS4 to be priced $50 above a console that's effectively somewhat better than a 7 year old console. Interesting. Chances that Sony will be taking losses at that price.

The realistic ceiling would be $450 for the base model and $50 more for premium. Of course, whatever the negative effect of the price is, it can be mitigated by, and this has been talked about before, having some form of instalment pay plan or subscription model.

360 was priced $50 above the Wii. It's not like this has been unprecedented. I expect at least one of orbis/durango sku's to be $399.
