Far Cry 3 PC performance thread

Oh well, the game can actually look quite nice when you really find a decent lighting position.

I don't even want to think what my GTX 460 would go through trying to run this at a decent resolution and framerate... guess there's no point even trying?

I want to know this as well. Getting concerned my GTX 460 1GB getting a bit old. Can we at least run it on medium?

I have the same card as you, with an i5 3570k. My settings right now are 1080p, DX11 mode (with D3D11MultithreadedRendering="1"), 4x MSAA, Enhanced Alpha To Coverage, SDAO, High Texture quality, High Ambient Lighting quality, High Shadow quality, Medium Post FX quality, Very High Geometry quality, Very High Vegetation quality, High Terrain quality, Very High Water quality, and High Environment quality.

Game runs pretty smooth in the first quest area, usually around 50 - 60 FPS with some spots being higher or lower as expected. Let me know if your experience is substantially different, I'm curious why this game seems to be performing so erratically across different hardware configurations.

Thanks for all the tips everyone, the framerate was horrible for me - Optimal settings the game decided on had a framerate of like 15fps tops. But bringing down the shadows alone makes a huge difference. My humble 550Ti can keep up with most stuff quite well at 1920x1080p now (I have a recent i7 in there so CPU isn't likely to be a bottleneck)

Will try with 3D later, but getting the impression that with Medium Shadow I may still get a half decent picture (passive 3D)

Reading this thread is like reading a different language. Is there anything I should be doing? running in win 7 with 2500k and a 6970

I don't know how your 460 compares to my 560Ti, but I can run the game very comfortably on primarily "High" settings, DX11, 1080p at 50-60 fps. So I'm guessing you won't have any problems as long as you can accept lowering some settings and maybe sacrificing 60 fps.

What resolution? Because that benchmark test says I should get 18fps average at 1080p on my 5850, but I am playing on 1600x900 on my 5850 maxed out I get about 30fps. Playing on medium I get about 40fps (only high textures and ultra FXAA).

Some screens, I used SweetFX for contrast and Sepia toned it. Mostly medium settings.

I think KyleN's mix of downsampling + SMAA on DX9, DOF removed, no AO, no motionblur has lead to the best results. His screenshots look gorgeous.

Has anyone tried disabling some of the icons on the minimap (diamonds, flora)? The config file on the previous page seems to indicate this is possible. I think just doing that would heighten immersion a lot.

Loot markers in an open world game is a horrific idea, I have no idea what they were thinking. Yes Red Dead Redemption did it with herbs, but the icon on the UI was generic to all herbs, not colour coded!

OK so he is able to use Smaa injector and/or SweetFX? I tried Sweet last night with DX9 and was still getting crashes or black screen. I'd love to Smaa as I haven't found any working inspector bits for AA yet.

I've done nothing with my life except eat and fap
can I apply FXAA through Nvidia inspector (the latest beta driver installed)? I usually use only in-game settings so I don't know anything about this stuff.

Just going by the screens you guys are posting it doesn't seem to look much better than Crysis did back in the day, except for the grass which looks quite nice.

Good lord, zooming in twice with the extended range scope for the sniper rifle trainwrecks performance. Drops to the single digits.

Damn, I'm away from GAF for one night and all this happens. Here's a comparison between SSAO 3 and 5 in DX9 (the first shot is with SSAO off) for anyone still wanting to see.

DX11 HDAO

It doesn't look as good as DX11's HDAO, but it's far less expensive.

IF you have 460 I have super oced one and this does it fine if you don't use 1080p. While I like 1080p this monitor does things fine at one or two notches below. The cpu is 3570 at 4.2GHz. OC your 460 if you can there is a bit of juice if your core isn't 800mhz plus or the shader is below 1750mhz.

when I get back next month will try to post pics.

Thanks Sethos. I'm just gonna stick with DX9 and SSAO at 5. I can't believe how sloppy the default SSAO is in this game. It's pretty crazy.

EDIT: Or 4, if it looks like HDAO.

Yeah, the default SSAO and HBAO to some extend are just poured on with a bucket of black paint. It's odd they have some much better ones available on DX9 through config changes that aren't available in-game.

HDAO in DX11 looks the same as "4" in DX9 to me.

If you do direct comparisons you'll easily spot the accuracy difference, however for the naked eye and in same cases for the untrained eye in comparisons, they may look similar, which is a good thing.

So for DX9 users, setting 4 is definitely the way to go.

However if you're running DX11 and got the headroom, HDAO is the superior option. However the majority of people probably won't really notice.

Anyone know why you'd want to use "Vsync 2 Frames" in FC3, I tried both and the framerate is best at Vsync 1 frame (hovers around 50 - 60fps) but if I use Vsync 2 Frames it stays locked @ 30fps.

It's 1/2 refresh lock I believe. Someone said it was triple buffering but I doubt that. So it'll lock at half refresh rate, i.e 30FPS in most cases.

That is desirable if your FPS is hovering around the mark, to give it a smoother feel without all the variation.

Okay i'm super confused by these comparison shots.

Why again is there literally NO noticeable difference between DX9 and DX11???

Second guessing a PC purchase, may just get it on the 360 now.

Searched in the thread but couldn't find anything so I'll ask. Does anyone know how the game runs on an E8500 3.16ghz Dual core cpu?

GPU and ram should be fine (1gB HD5870 and 4gB of some kind of ram that I cant remember at the moment)

From what I've seen, there are some notable differences, some more subtle than others but there is an enormous difference between max settings dx9 at 1920x1080 or higher and what you would see on either console at 720p.

Even HDAO isn't perfect. It gets the the weird halo effect on random things too, such as the base of the bed and the table next to it.

DX9 vs DX11 is the new "I cant tell the difference between 30 and 60 fps!"

I'm currently running the same card. Running settings at max on DX9 at 1080P. Game is completely playable with hardly any slow down, and looks great to boot. I'm not counting FPS because that's never been a thing for me, but it's stable and doesn't feel sluggish to me at all.
