I'm dedicated to Halo, I've been around since day one xbox CE and I'm outspoken on B.net and Waypoint etc. I'm not worried at all. Game has been out a 5 or 6 weeks and it's now XMAS holidays plus the developer has plenty of early next year updates, weekly changes and have stated ongoing support.

I have fun with Halo 4, just like I did Reach, just like I did 3 or 2 or CE. They've all had their + and -. Sure my friends list over the years has more COD games when they're online but the same core friends I played with in previous games are the same I'm playing with today. Why those same friends? Because we're all happy with a new experience each game and realise it's about the fun of competition, not just competition for the winner skilled sake all the time.

Sure some smaller maps, tweaks and classic iterations but that's coming so what's the big deal right now? Some features to get patched, ok so it's not perfect but no Halo or video game has ever been that way, so relax and have some fun with your favourite franchise.

ahaha dude I know, it's like, all these tryhards just criticize all day, and I'm here having a blast playing Halo 4 on the 360 that's installed in my Ford Truck while I blast Breaking Benjamin and chow down on beer and pretzels

People still listen to Breaking Benjamin?

Also, orznge, remember that Ozzy totally schooled you and ignored you yesterday so he can't see your response.

Hahaha I completely forgot about the fact he ignored him. You should've quoted it so ozzy had to see it anyway!

So I thought at a focal point like the last few pages I'd give you the benefit of the doubt and open up your ignored post for redemption...never again.

You mean Mountain Dew and Doritos, right? The truck comes with a glove compartment full of them.

Well damn its not like we try. But with all the random elements, no red x's, boltshots etc etc. Fun gets sucked out imo. You act as if having fun is something I can just turn on in myself. I want to have fun every time I play, but the games gotta meet me halfway here.

See the reason we pick on you is because this doesn't reflect how the ignore button should work. In real life no one says, "I'm ignoring you now." We just do it because we're adults.

Ozzy, you're not going to convince people who don't like the game to like the game, especially when said game has been available for consumptions for a month and a half. When getting into discussions with people over the merits of Halo 4, it's imperative to understand that.

So you never get the positive side of the randomness and get that extra killing streak turned into a killing frenzy? Tell me you don't smirk when you get the positive side.

I've always enjoyed the "random elements" of Halo. Like your own friend decides to piss off your full warthog with a flag in the last 10 seconds on standoff from a very even game just for the LULZ. I guess the developer should eradicate all events and just have BR and grenades with a map remake of Rome's Colosseum 1v1 with hundreds of spectators just watching in awe of the "skill required".

If you care to follow anything I write I totally agree some 1-3 playlists should be fully customisable for the 80-90% of the old classic experience. I am totally against the wave of posters trying to make all of Halo playlists like this.

There is demand for Infinity Slayer, there is demand for old Classic and they can happily live next to each. Shit.

Now you're trying to tell me how and who I should ignore...OK good luck with that. The poster in particular that I ignore has opportunity for personal and somewhat consumer/vendor interaction with the developers of the franchise everyone loves/hates and repeatedly just has snide childish comments. I have better things to do with my time thanks.

I can sum up my problems with Halo 4 in the word "inconsistent"

It started with Reach and its compounded much further now.
The gunplay is the best in the series, but the way the maps play out now feels so random and forgettable. Most objective modes just feel boring. Instant respawns has had a huge impact on the pacing of the game and encounter strategy. Everything just feels like 'zerg-rush' now.
It's turned the entire experience into a casual-mode for me. Vehicles are death traps and I'd rather have my AA's then be in any vehicle now. They should have made them move even faster or give them some level of excitement to pilot

I dont smirk when I get on the positive side. I feel like a dick. Its funny and I laugh, but its not a smirk, its a full on evil cackle.

I would have more fun competing over power weapons.

Random stuff in Halo was great when the random stuff was caused by the engine and physics and was controllable. A hog going flying and splattering a teammate is funny, a enemy getting a incinerator cannon out of nowhere is actually pretty pedestrian.

BTW I would have enjoyed it more to win that game than to have a team mate troll and purposefully lose - I am beginning to think I understand why I disagree with you so much now.

Actually in a way, I am your servant. Or at least your monkey-butler. You gave us $60 (or $40 through the non-bomba rolling promo via Amazon and other retailers) so we owe you a game, support, communication and respect. You will ALWAYS get that. The community is so large and varied we can't make everyone happy all of the time, but on gaf, I am a poster with some insight, not a PR person. Not a marketing wonk.

So I will continue to post in that role.

Eloquent. I like it.

Believe me I love the random shenanigans you can pull in Halo. Getting splattered by wreckage, haveing an explosions catapult your vehicle into an insane barrel roll, etc etc etc. BTB was my favorite playlist in Halo 2 and Halo 3. But there's a reason I hated it in Reach and 4. (DMR, shitty vehicles / plasma grenades and plasma pistols and DMR)

The difference is the randomness you're describing is the random shenanigans I like. I've been known to capture the enemy flag and do a victory lap with it. Or even return it to their base because it was funny.

What i don't like is PROGRAMMED randomess. Shit like giving one team a power weapon because they were in the right place at the right time. Or giving Johnny an incinerator cannon and Billy a needler.

No, that is straight up bullshit and not fun.

PS, I don't think anyone is dense enough to think 343 is going to make everything small maps, rifle starts, barebones. We're with you on the creating playlists thing. No need to combative or defensive on that front.

There's a difference between lack of civility and criticism. There's nothing I want more than to understand why Halo went the way it did, why the developers made the changes they made, but I have never had an honest, straightforward answer on any question I've ever asked, no matter how civil it was..... Why should I bother with legitimite questions and civil discussion when I simply get dismissed with a sarcastic brush-off or an empty promise that everything is going to be fine? I'm past the point of pretending that civil, well-thought out criticism will get a legitimate response because it never has.

I want nothing more than to love Halo again, but in leiu of that, I'd like to at least know why the people making it thought it needed to change so much.
Nailed it. I was pretty optimistic and excited for Halo 4. At this point, I'm more apathetic than anything else most nights. I only get on to play with other people, because the game is either frustrating/boring/pointless otherwise.

I put out some legit criticisms early on, but I don't feel the need to repeat myself dozens of times. How folks like Karl, u4ix, Cyren, etc, even Ozzy in the other camp, can continue to put forth the same points over and over to no effect is beyond me.

The fact that u4ix put out a legitimate concern regarding design philosophy and was derided for it is just another wtf moment to add to the Halo 4 experience.

People keep asking about choices like boltshot, playlists, ordnance, specializations, etc. To quote mastrbiggy, I offer a defeated and sarcastic "Why not?" This is the philosophy behind changes in Halo.

Your friend being a dick is not random in any sense of the word. Unexpected maybe, not random. Programmed in randomness is never good for fair play. It's not about competitiveness, it's about having a game that's fair for everyone involved. I've stopped playing CoD because it became increasingly unfair for everyone involved. Sure, sometimes you're the one getting a lucky killstreak from a care package and you get 10 free kills but you're essentially just taking turns screwing each other over. Halo has become a game where I feel like I'm being screwed over by the game instead of being outplayed. A bad team wont suddenly beat a good team because of the randomness in Reach and Halo 4, but it definitely impacts the outcome enough to be a big factor when teams are evenly matched. Plus, even with uneven teams dying just once because of some game mechanic can annoy me to no end. I can go +20 or whatever and still feel frustrated by a couple of deaths that probably wouldn't have happened had the game been fair.

To put on my slurping bib for a second, others have said it better so I'll keep it short. I like that we have 343 (and previously Bungie) posting on here even if it's not all rosy. I don't delegate the responsibilities of the flaws I perceive onto Frankie or Ellis or really expect anything other than posting like any other poster and maybe giving a heads up to things every now and then. They're GAF members first, and I appreciate that they post here as it's something a bit unique to HaloGAF as opposed to most ever other major title.

Though I wouldn't want that to be a reason to feel the need to censor any feelings had on the game. The people here aren't any worse off than in any other game's thread, except there's more of them and a wider acceptance of it. I mean, Halo is a lot of things to a lot of people but I'm sure we can come to a HaloGAF consensus on why 4 doesn't hit that mark for a lot of us-- and individually we have, and there's plenty of common ground among them.

You're talking about randomness that arises primarily from freedom and player choice. That's a good thing.

What many complain about with H4 is randomness that arises from design decisions. Whether that's good or bad is a matter of opinion. My opinion is that it's bad.

I don't see any issue for Infinity Slayer really, I'd be happy if they stay random or if they were tweaked as you suggest. Doesn't bother me that much. I never had issue with Mario Kart cube pick ups being random or even weighted for blue shells for last place. It's was a balancing thing for close matches which in turn made it more fun.

Again I agree having classic playlists without this randomness is ideal, so why gimp Infinity from having some randomness?

I have seen about 3 MLG forge maps.

They either have completely flat dark ambient light, or they have gone over the budget and the baked in lighting has turned itself off.

why.

Some forge issues I believe, I can get APK to reply later. He know the ins and outs of the current issues with the forge mode.

I seriously doubt it.

But part of the problem also lies in the fact that we don't have Halo 4 community features. Exactly the kind of stuff you'd see in Halo threads.

Good point.

Bitching is just part of the cycle. I don't hate the game, but I don't think it's amazing either, why is why I don't post as much anymore, either. Don't have anything good to contribute.

I can go +20 or whatever and still feel frustrated by a couple of deaths that probably wouldn't have happened had the game been fair.

To me that's precisely the situations and attitude that hinders you from just enjoying the game. So 1-3 deaths to a cheap boltshot or binary rifle against going +17 or so with 20 kills overall and you're still not happy with the game or experience. For one second look at your skill and statistics as well as most likely being a regular team of friends VS. the other team most likely randoms or minor friends partied up. They deserve to enjoy the game just as your COD reasoning outlines.

There is nothing wrong with dying to randomness some 5 or 10% of the time for the sake of the greater good or dare I say fun. I totally agree for customs or MLG events/playlists the options and mechanics have to be more focused and less random. However that said it's precisely why I choose to not play or watch MLG, I find that totally boring and repetitive.

Somewhat off topic, but all this crap with The WarZ makes me appreciate 343i that little bit more. As far as community interaction goes, it could be A LOT worse. 0_o

Us: "I dont like this, I want this to happen (Insert bulleted list)"
Ozzy: "Games fine, I have fun!"
Us: "Well we along with all the other people who left find X and Y ruins our fun"
Ozzy: "But I have fun!"
Us: "...."

If you want to know why I don't post as much any more - it's this level of discourse. And this sin't even a bad example. I post here as a member of the community. It's not actually a part of my job. Before you go off and say "YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO..." etc, of course me and any member of the studio are supposed to take care of the needs of the community, we do, and we take it seriously and will continue to do so nonstop, through long hours, holidays, etc.

But is it too much to ask for conversation to remain civil? I simply try to speak to people as I would in real life. That's all.

This isn't something unique to gaf, or Halo, it's a general trend in everything from movies, to music to politics, and since it's not in my area of responsibility, I am choosing to avoid responding to this tone. While simultaneously reacting to its content as a practical aspect of the job.

So no matter how salty the conversation, the topics are being addressed and taken seriously, but the tone of discourse has plummeted over the years. I think new folks are used to it, or entered into it when it was like this, but I am old and farty and I remember how excited and optimistic folks used to be about this hobby.
And it doesn't help when the OP of the thread is more interested in putting community member's posts in the OT to make fun of them (that's classy), along with animated gifs of girls, rather than to put relevant information in about the game. This community has gone downhill and it's giving me and others less reason to even post here. Thanks, Kyle.

The same is to be said in reverse, you always champion the same exact settings and maps basically. I post much of the same in retaliation to the never ending classic argument.

Literally 343i have come out and said they'll rework Slayer Pro. So say we get smaller Forged maps, a small map pack early next year and some TU tweaks that allow customs/classic playlists to deliver 80-95% of the old classic experience. By the way I'm actually thinking this is almost exactly what is happening over at 343i for Slayer Pro/MLG playlists.

How is the classic crowd going to react? More changes, more tweaks, more splintered settings from that segment of players. Sure it happens just the same in other playlists but do you not see the developers wanting to support you in your playlists?

I disagree that I just post I like, for example I listed 7 counters to boltshot yesterday but no one replied, why? Because my debating put the argument to rest, hell I even agree the range needs a nerf but I guess I just get black and white written off as the casual like it guy. Even though I'm actually a hardcore objective competitive guy.

Dude, I think only you and Greencastle honestly care about that. Maybe it reflects these strange times we're in, but really just drop it already. It's an OT. The thirteenth OT to one of the most popular gaming franchises ever of all time, that runs concurrent to the OT of the current game in the franchise. It's a silly, cynical post, but one that no one's paid any mind to after page one except for you two.

Way to oversimplify. There is literally a handful here that ruin these OT's. I'm not sure I want to stick around like Frankie. I try to post valid thought provoking discussion worthy posts but I guess that's just too mature here.

It's a community thread and you have the author of the thread literally making fun of other members and laughing about it. And everyone's like,"it's cool, dude. It's just a community thread." Did I miss something? Community threads shouldn't have that crap. What part of Kyle's douchebaggery is okay? Apparently the mods thinks it is just as hilarious...
