Soul Sacrifice (Vita) Demo impressions

This looks every bit as awesome as i hoped it would. Replacing normal loot with crafting magic and tatoos sounds like a fantastic idea.

Im really not a fan of monster hunter and dont see how this is the same bar the whole killing bosses things. This looks closer to the gamplay of god eater but with a much more interesting take on it. I loved god eater burst and loved PSO on dream cast. Next year has this, RO (EU), GE 2 and possibly PSO2 coming to Vita..... If ya like me and love those kind of games, its gonna be a good year for Vita gaming.

Okay, took the time to stand up my Jpan Vita account as I had a spare 8gb card.

So yeah, this demo is frankly, kick-ass

Dig the hell out of the presentation and the actual combat mechanics feel fantastic.
Technically it looks awesome as well.

Now if I only knew what the hell everything said lol

Anyway, Sony US better not pass on this like they did Demon's Souls.

This shit NEEDS to come here

How's the image quality of this game?

I'm a bit spoiled by Stranger's Wrath native res, but this looks like it's up there

It's a fantastic looking game, carried by it's great artwork. Finally MoHun and Phantasy Star Portable have some competition in that regard.

Really liked what I played of it, but it's difficult for me to get a real sense of the flow of the game without knowing what any of the text means.

It looks like the game has a solid approach to narrative, and I like the aesthetic of the artwork within the book itself.

Combat wise this is a big step up from games like MH/RO, to me at least. It doesn't feel as clunky as either of those, and it's actually quite fluid. Proper roll and lock on buttons are greatly appreciated and there seems to be a bit of variation in the way you approach enemies, which is nice. I was struggling to understand whether holding 'R' was an attack modifier and such.

Customization looks a little limited, although I'd expect more from the full game. I don't know whether you can unlock new armour/gear, but there were only a few options in the character customization screen. It looks like you can set which spells you want to take into battle, as well.

I took a bunch of screenshots but I have no idea how to get them off my JP account, since PC content manager doesn't work properly for me.

This should be added to the OP for those who don't understand Japanese http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jl18nzulmuo

Guys can I download the demo from my PS3 on my japanese account, log into my US account tied to my Vita and transfer the demo from there?

Ahh it makes sense now, L to save them and replenish health and R to sacrifice them so you can use more magic attacks.

And R switches between two sets of attacks, duh! I'll go back and play it armed with this info.

Ok guys, it is morning, worth switching out the memory card? I'm leaning towards yes...but yeah, it will be a bitch to re-organise my 32..and remember my JPN password..

Im just gonna wait. While I really want to play this, I think playing it will just make the wait for it more painful. Il be happy with watching the vids and impressions for now.

Don't worry about it. Aram is the PR guy on this. It's not only coming, but it should get some decent marketing as well. I hope Sony realizes what they have in Aram and allows him to promote games Atlus style.

Same here. I'm fine with video/impressions. I don't like the whole foreign account thing either. It's too much of a hassle for me.

I apologize, but who's Aram?

He post here?

(I tend to look at Avatars, not names, sry)

Given how Vita is doing Sony will want to push this out ASAP, for sure before E3 and next-gen apocalypse. Probably together with price drop.
They already dropped the price by EUR 50 (I guess permanently seeing that you can get one with LBPV for EUR 160 on Amazon) and the way they are pushing/advertising this holiday bundle and PSABR I don't think you'll have to worry about exposure. Talking about Europe here, dunno about the US.

Do I drop 200au on a vita now from Germany or wait till the price drop and this releases? When is the price drop rumoured for? Decisions!!! I really want a Vita now :(

A few images from me. Not done with the prologue yet.

I gotta admit, the story is way more engaging than I was expecting it to be. Part of this is probably due to the way it's being told though. The game makes full use of the journal/storybook aesthetic.

Is there a price drop rumoured? Sony don't like dropping the price of their consoles.

The price drop rumour is not really what people believe it is.

A while back in an interview they said they are always looking into making the hardware cheaper to make and sell....

that was basically it. People took this to mean a price drop next year.

grab one. with ps+, it's really a great deal. And I think we'll be waiting a long while before we see a big price drop from Sony. They just cannot afford it.

Just remember, it takes about twice as long to charge via usb vs the charger, and you wont be able to use the germany wall plug.

If it helps sway your decision, I can send you a 4Gb I'll never use, no charge.

Aram Jabbari former PR guy for Atlus:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=497629
http://blog.us.playstation.com/author/ajabbari/

He's really good at his craft.. Games like Persona really benefited form exposure that Aram helped bring.. Aram, if given the resources can take this game to the next level sales wise. He's also working on the new Killzone game, and other Vita projects.

edit: how could I forget. He was behind the PR push for Demon's Souls release in the US.

PSV (WiFi) dropped from EUR 249 to EUR 199 here in Germany (I guess Europe too - can be had for EUR 160 at Amazon). Don't know if it is just for the holidays but considering it was retailer dropped to below EUR 200 around summer I guess it's permanent.

It's already ~ EUR 100 below launch price. I don't think it'll go much lower soon - maybe around Easter again depending on how it sells.

Let's say the truth, is this really a monster hunter clone or it's more like an action jrpg with long or hard boss fights(like phantasy star portable or others)?

From what I have seen its way closer to God Eater (and there for combat wise PSO) than Monster Hunter.

Calling everything fighting bosses as its focus monster hunter clones its pretty misleading as monster hunter has its own style of gameplay that some people love and others hate. The "Clones" as they are called are often a lot closer, gameplayer wise to the PSO style games.

I really don't understand this mania of calling monster hunter clone everything has giant monsters...
Luckily for people like me that never liked monster hunter it's a unique game, the only game i consider a real monster hunter clone is gods eater, with the very little difference that i liked it lol.

It's not really of any concern to me, but what have they done to get some of those floor textures?! Some parts look like a Saturn game!

Yeah the grass one looked bad from the screenshots but the one with the sand that moves under your feet looks really quite cool - how did it look in-game to those that played it?

Soul Sacrifice is a good reason to buy Vita if you don't have one right now. I'm so jelly 'bout this demo to japanese gamers. I'm looking at these screenshots, videos and it's truly amazing game.

Lots of info here (I've played for over 4 hours now). Feel free to put in the OP if you feel it would be helpful.

Links to my playthrough of the prologue: (about 100 minutes total)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1VBXGww5UE

The demo goes beyond the prologue with 4 more missions. Nothing in the prologue is particularly long or hard (despite my troubles in the above videos, lol), but the story is actually really awesome. The music is fucking incredible, too. The 4 missions (well, the last 3) after the prologue are more "real", and are longer and more difficult.

There is a LOT of customization in this game. I will try to explain it as I currently have seen it:

-You have two levels. One is a Defense/Health level, and one is an Attack level. You level these up by saving (Defense/Health) or sacrificing (Attack) enemies. Bosses/bigger enemies give more EXP. Also, some enemies will lower your EXP in the department you don't choose (for example, saving: Defense/Health +4exp, Attack -2exp), but it will never level you down.

-You have the sacrificial magics. These are obtained by clearing stages (and possibly picked up in stages themselves?). Some drop more rarely than others. These involve all sorts of attacks, defensive maneuvers, evasive maneuvers, heals/regens, and more. As an above poster stated, if you get two of the same one, you can "combine" them for a +1 sort of thing. After that, you need 4 - then 8 - etc, to keep going to +2, +3. This usually lets you use it more times. (Using a sacrificial magic TOO many times and it will stop working completely and you need to "rejuvinate" it outside of missions by usings the books tears. As long as you don't use it ALL THE WAY down, it will fully repair after each fight. Also, you can find areas in each map where you can restore your "uses", although these are not unlimited. The proper use of each number of magic at the right time is VERY IMPORTANT to playing well.)

-There is also synthesis to make sacrificial magics. Currently I have a list of about 12 different magics that I can make, using other magics. I'm not sure yet how to find more recipes (there may not be more in the demo).

-After the prologue, you also get the ability to customize your arm. This is sorta like your "armor", although a lot of this customization grants bonuses to attack and stuff as well. You get these "seals" to place in your armor (there are 5 slots: two for "upper arm", two for "lower arm", and one for "hand") by killing a certain number of enemies. For example, kill 5 Jack-o'-Lanterns (a boss), and you unlock a certain seal. I LOVE this system because it feels like even if you don't get the rare sacrificial magic drop you are going for, you are always making progress on your seals (as well as your character levels, of course!).

-You've also got the "super attacks". I'm honestly not 100% sure how to earn these, but I've got Salamander. You can set up to 5 of these on your body at once.

There is other customization in there as well. I'll dive back in in a bit and check it out.

Thank you for the impressions, this game looks to be incredible.

Visuals, music, gameplay, story, seems like they nailed everything.

Looks like the gameplay might have a lot more variety to your approach than in MH since you have so many different spells that serve different purposes (attack, defense, movement etc). Unlike MH where you start with a movelist for your weapon and it never changes. All you do is augment your stats via equipment. You get abilities sure (earplugs, faster healing, more invincible roll etc) but its nothing you actually use as part of the combat to change it.

Did anyone beat Cerberus online yet? I'm going to play a bit more today but play the other missions to "level up" my arm / magics so I can not run out as quickly during the fight I guess.

So is this game going to be more of a character action type game or a massive action RPG? Should I expect it to take 10 hours to finish or 100?

It's been one of my most anticipated Vita titles since it was announced but I feel like there is still a lot I don't know about it.
