FTL |OT| Stories of the Space Oregon Trail

Wanna hear a good joke? Waste your time helping me! LOL!
What do you do with a large crew, anyway? I mean a crewman on helm, shields, engine, and weapons and you're set. Do you train the others as backups? Or is it for raiding?

For me, a large crew is having enough to man my systems, which is rare for me to have.

There's this guy on youtube I've been watching lately, zzandr1o I think is his name. He's pretty good at this game haha. Learning a lot from the way he plays the game.

Ugh... I lost on the last boss in the most anticlimatic way possible (he slipped behind me and I missclicked once and went the wrong way so I couldn't catch him again)......... FTL more like FML

my ship was pretty much in god mode. upgraded everything, full crew, super powerful weapons. sigh. I had 30+ missiles, around 25 drones, and 25 fuel... ughhhhhhh

This game is pretty great but it seems like every enemy I fight starts fires from just a few shots and then it escalates from there - anything I can upgrade to deal with the fire? I'm already opening doors to vent (except when my door control blows up which seems to be the first thing to go)

Nymerio

Well, upgrading the doors helps to stop the fire from spreading. Other than that, send one or more crew members in to put out the fire?

1) Rock crew members (immune to fire).
2) Upgraded doors: blast doors (resist fire spreading).

This is my first game with the engineer ship... about to meet the final boss and get fucked hard.

I'm just happy to have made it this far. I lost a couple crew early on and have had a bit more bad luck than usual. I'll be happy if I even get past the boss' first form...

omfg that little ship did! what a cute little gun

"The Sentry" (tip of the hat to TF2) was victorious on the normal leve of difficulty with that setup. The boss didn't even get me down to 75% health!

I spammed the hell out of the ion blaster.... it was a REALLY gruelling fight with neither side doing a lot of damage....

I still can't believe I beat him....

only 3650 points! lol. my poor little ship. I came close to dying so many times... hell, I had more trouble with the rebels in sector 8 than the boss itself! unbelievable. also, I unlocked the stealth ship on this run. put this crew in the hall of fame.

Dude was dodging three separate lasers like they were nothing.

You have to click on the people you want to teleport back, not the location where you want them to be teleported to (they'll always appear in your teleporter room again).

The question was asked and answered a couple times in the thread already. :)

The second form has 4 regular drones in total, iirc. One beam drone, one anti-ship drone, the boarding drone and the defence drone.

thank god for search. my crewmember was going to die because I couldn't teleport her back.

bumping this post for anyone else.

Have you guys ever played a game where your luck went from amazing to terrible? I was kicking ass in the Zoltan A. Picking up new crew members, slicing through enemies like butter, getting drone parts, etc. Then I got the weapon pre-igniter as part of an enemy's surrender. I thought the game was over at that point..... but for the next 3 sectors, none of the stores I visited had lasers, bombs, or laser attack drones. I was stuck with the Halberd Beam, the Leto, and a beam drone. I quickly began exhausting my massive supply of missiles and once enemies started having 3 shields I was fucked. Finally, I stumbled upon the 5 burst laser... but I lacked the cash to upgrade my ship to the point where I could use it and the Halberd Beam at the same time. What a disappointing finish.

Haha, that figures... I lost my first crew member on literally the last point on the map before the exit to sector 8 for that achievement. Shouldn't be too hard to get eventually, but of course it had to happen then. I also beat the first form of the boss on that run, then tried to get to a repair station before the second form and it told me game over. So uhh... I guess don't get too far away from it? Pretty anti-climactic, didn't realize that would happen.

So I've played about an hour of this on my 2012 Macbook Air. I really like it, but it stresses the hell out of the CPU and causes the fans to crank up to max and sound like two launch Xbox 360s mating. That seems ridiculous for a game like this. Any fixes?

Wow dang. I play it on a crappy old Dell laptop from 2008 and that happens to me too but I thought it was just me. Takes a real long time to load at the start too and alt-tabbing out to use the internet while playing totally hoses my shit. Seems like the game might be a little CPU intensive for as lightweight as it looks.

when in the last stand zone and go to jump you should see a big counter on the right side that says something like 'Jumps until flagship reaches rebel base'.

I'm never able to repair either -- hurray for hull repair drones

Are you on the latest patch? The first release of the game didn't lock the frame rate or vsync. Look in the lower right hand corner of the first menu... if it's v 1.01 you need to update the game.

bout to hit up the 3rd stage of the boss like so
ftl2tedfx.png

last 2 stages were pretty easy, just take out the missile launcher with my rockmen and then use them for damage control. the boarding drones were kind of a pain.

The boss is really easy on Easy with the combination of crew teleporter and cloaking. Is that run on easy or normal? Either way you are in great shape

yeah i destroyed him haha. so happy, first victory in about 16 hours according to steam...pretty bad but i'll take it. it's on easy. didn't use any missiles until sector 7 when i got the breach bomb. that thing was a god send. 51% evade really helped too, i don't really see the point in getting full shields.

How do you use a teleporter right? The only thing I've managed to do with it is send my crew over to die on the enemy ship rather than on my own... And i get the feeling that victory by boarding seems like a good plan.

I need to give this game another go soon. Maybe try out the Engi ship, or go for two achievements on the Krestal. Which two are easier for the Red-Tail?

i am of the opinion that the teleporter isn't needed until the final fight, and i just teleport my dudes into the weapons bays to take out the guys and the missiles/ion bombs. makes life so much easier. taking out the beam or the laser weapons is optional.

I just want to try out a strategy that involves giant angry praying mantises eating my foes. You know, for variety. Last I did that, my mantises got beat up... Need better mantises.

sangreal

Member
I love boaridng (and thus, the Mantis B). Gets you more fuel and scrap too. Anyways, I usually try to take out their weapons with whatever I have to buy time, and then let my mantis crew devour theirs. The only hiccup is when they have a medbay, which you will have to find a way to disable. Your crew might get beat up the first couple of times, but just teleport them back and heal up. They'll gain experience and become stronger after awhile

there should be two buttons by the teleporter, one to teleport to the enemy, and one to teleport back (after cooldown). Just click the button and the room with your crew in it on the enemy ship (you will want everyone in the same room)

McNum

Oh, I have to click the room with my away team in after clicking recall... Well there's a few stupid deaths that could have been avoided. I just thought the teleporter wasn't ready yet. Good to know, thanks.

Anyone have any strategies for the slug ship? I'm trying to get the achievement for making it to the last sector while going through x number nebulae, and I can't even make it halfway without some disaster.

Victory again.. this time with the Zoltan A. I really dislike this ship. You burn through the first couple of sectors without much sweat, but if you can't find a secondary weapon shortly thereafter you will die quickly. I nearly died several times, but finally in sector 7 everything came together. I ended up facing the boss with burst laser II, burst laser I, the halberd beam, and small bombs (which I couldn't use until the final boss because I lacked the scrap to upgrade my weapon systems). I had cloak, 4 shields, and 45% evade -- all of which came in sectors 6 and 7. I ended up losing half of my health on the way to fight the final boss... but once I reached the boss I was hit only once.

I really hate how precarious things are in this ship. One missile will bring your Zoltan crew down to 10 or 20 health. If you are boarded in the engine or shield rooms and zoltans are powering those rooms, you may be fucked. The med bay is located way too far away as well. It's just a very unstable ship. I had the good fortune of clinging to life long enough to get an exceptional offensive and defensive arsenal as well as a few more crew members but there were many times it could've gone to hell for me...

28 games, 3 victories and 1 game where I should've had a victory. I've been pretty lucky.

How do I get the slug ship? Just go to the slug homeworlds as much as possbile and hope for the best? I've lucked into all the ships I have - engie, zoltan, federation, and stealth.

go to the slug homeworlds and whenever you fight a slug let them surrender. one of them will offer you a weapon or data. take that data. go to quest marker and tail the ship (need sensors II or a slug crew). kill the crew instead of destroying the ship.

or just go to ftl.wikia.com/wiki/Ships for better advice

nah, that's enough info. I'll only resort to the step by step guide if I get really stumped. thx

Woohoo, beat it a second time. This time using the stealth cruiser, I'm really, really liking it! Also managed to unlock just about all the ships, I'm only missing the secret one. For some reason I haven't gotten that event yet... Of all the great games that came out this year, this is the only one I keep coming back to. Absolutely brilliant.

I thought you got more ships from achievements, I didn't realize each had such a specific criteria. The game never really tells you how you get more, so I'm glad I checked. Some of them like the Mantis one, I would never get on my own, because I never upgrade my med-bay.

Yay! Rebel Flagship destroyed! (On Easy...)

The Engi ship is more powerful that it looks. Two Anti-Ship I drones, a Sys-Repair Drone, an Ion Bomb Launcher and whatever weapon you might like after that, and the Rebel Flagship becomes... manageable. Not easy, though. Ion Bomb to the shields lets the drones do their work. Sys-Repair drone keeps my ship okay, and Cloak for the
Power Surges
. Yeah, you cannot superweapon what you cannot see. Silly rebels. I did have to retreat and repair once, but that's only fair considering
the amount of repairs they get.

Well, unlocked Engi B and Osprey A on this one. The Engi B is... weird. Just one crew and some drones? Osprey has its own special weapon, but... does that come at the cost of the cloak?

You know, fuck the accuracy in this game. Out of three volleys of a total of 4 lasers and 2 missiles, only one laser shot and one missile hit. That's on the final form of the rebel ship. I couldn't bring their super shield down before the fucker overwhelmed me with rockets and the super laser thing. As good as this game is, it pisses me off more often than not.

You get the second layout for every ship through achievements

I won another one! (Still on easy...) This one, not quite as decisively... to say the least. Ah well, there's only really one point of Hull that matters, right? Plus, it wouldn't really be FTL if you didn't have a spaceship full of holes and on fire.

The Federation Cruiser is... fairly good. As you can see, I didn't upgrade its weapons at all, only really added a Defense and Anti-Personnel Drone. Max Shields and Max Engine, and of course, Max Artillery Beam. That's just a turtler's dream weapon. You pretty much win by time out just by being in a battle. I only really brought out the Burst Laser when I either needed pinpoint fire or to break Zoltan shields down.

So, I guess it's time to attempt to unlock some ships now. Or try to win with The Krestal.

just use teleporting bombs, they (almost) never fail

Is the rock ship really good? I played it for the first time and smoked the game. I got a bit lucky - had the opportunity to pick up a weapon pre-loader early on. My end setup was a 5 shot burst laser, the ion gun mark II (best gun ever), and small bombs. I invested in drones early but never found any :(. Luckily, I bought cloak in secor 7. Final Score: 4600. I actually used teleportingn for the first time against the final boss (because why not?) and it went pretty great.

I seem to have figured out how to get to the end fairly painlessly. In the last 4 or 5 games I've made it to the end twice and won once. My favourite combo is a laser followed by a beam weapon with a bomb of some kind as backup, but there are SO many ways to beat this game. I keep learning new things each time I play! I love it.
just use teleporting bombs, they (almost) never fail

The first 10 or so games I played I didn't recognize how awesome bombs were. Even the small bombs are great - 2 damage to systems and 2 damage to the crew. Those will fuck ship up fast. One layer of shields down. When you're facing the final boss, it'll quickly damage his weapons and kill the single crew member trying to repair those weapons in just a few hits. And if you can get breach bombs? You will fuck their shit up.....

On my previous playthrough I reached the boss with nothing but bombs and boarding party. Bombs don't do damage to hull. The second form of the rebel ship was dead in space, couldn't shoot, couldn't send drones but my bombs were not doing any damage to its hull, only to systems and crew. At least the bombs I had did. It seems both types of the Mantis crtuiser are surprisingly ill-equipped to deal with the boss. A lot of fun to board an enemy ship with four mantises though!

Just saw on the FTL forums that there's a new patch coming soon.

It fixes some bugs, adds some hotkeys and has some fairly nice UI upgrades. Specifically air-less rooms will now have hazard stripes on the floor in addition to the orange border and, something every game should have, FTL will have a colorblind friendly mode.

It's available already if you set FTL to accept beta builds on Steam, if that's where you got it.

I tried the stealth cruiser for the first time. Made it to the final boss but was absolutely wiped out in the second phase. It's a very difficult ship to get the hang of, especially early on. If I was more familiar with it I probably would've beaten the final boss.

Once you get the hang of it, the final boss is quite easy with it. At least it was for me. I enjoyed playing with the ship very much.

Ok, so I played a couple games in normal and easy. I found easy to be a little too easy, and on normal I got as far as to the fifth "floor".

Solar flares are destroying me right now. My entire ship gets set on fire and all my guys start dying left and right...

It's no shame to just hit the FTL button as soon as it lights up when dealing with solar flares. I take it you're venting the rooms with the fire in to space?

Same rules as any other fight. Live long enough and the Jump button lights up. Of course, the Flagship will move towards the base while you jump around looking for a Repair or Store location, but it's a calculated risk.

Speaking of which, I got a victorious Kestrel now. I <3 Fire Beam. Winning armament was Burst Laser II, Heavy Ion, Pegasus Missile, and Fire Beam. Pegasus to blast their shield generator, Ion to keep it shut down, Burst for general damage and Fire Beam for BURN! BURN TO THE GROUND! BURN! So much fire... And fire will cause one point of damage if it destroys a room. I got a chip damage KO on the boss that way.

Well, I guess it's time to go look for more ships. Only got the Kestrel, the Engi, and the Federation Cruiser still... Any suggestions on what to look for first?
