God of War Ascension Screenshots - Best looking Console Game this gen ?

Screenshots are one thing, but the animation in this game is really fucking good. Notably better than GOW3 (which already had really fucking good animation).

The lightning is the one thing that always stood out to me in GoW3...it looked...well...shit compared to everything else.

You are surely joking right? Taken directly from tv and this is in game.

Lol. GAF never change. We have only seen a fraction of what this game has to offer, and already people are worried; claiming it looks bad, etc. Are we all that jaded?

Outside of perception, preference, or bias, there really is no such thing as best graphics ever for these consoles. It can easily be argued that all the top end console games these days are equally impressive while making different trade-offs.

Game does look great though.

The lighting in GoW3 was pretty shitty. Aside from the self-shadowing on Kratos and other non-playable characters and certain specific areas, the lighting and shadowing was pre-baked. GoW:A wins by default by having proper shadow maps on the environments.

I'm not that sure what do you mean here. The current generation is exclusively prebaked, so...

I thought they had used HDR quite beautifully

I'm not really impressed by the content in the E3 demo. I can't believe we haven't got a single proper trailer for this game yet.

Those screens look very good, especially for a demo. The God of War 3 demo looked great as well, but the final game, I think, just had that much more polish. Ascension is still 3 or 4 months away, and the last few months of game development usually go towards polishing up the little things.

As for The Last of Us, it looks phenomenal as well. Different games, going for different things, and both are looking to pull off their respective goals well.

I'm just geeking out that I get two games of such graphical calibur in the same year, on a console that is 7 years old. I just built a gaming PC, and the games look great (playing through The Witcher 2, Metro, and Rage at the moment), but that cost me over $1200. A $200 console is pumping out visuals that maybe don't match the best of my PC games, but it can certainly hold its own.

I can't wait to get my hands on both of those. Don't see much reason to compare them, though. I will own them both, that's for sure.

Looks fantastic. Not sure if it will top Uncharted 3 though, which is currently leaps and bounds above everything else on consoles.

Why do you keep showing that pic of Kratos removing that god's head... it just erases any sort of hype I might come up with for Ascension. Please, tame that unnecessary violence, make it powerful but tasteful (more like previous ones).

Topping it or not, getting anywhere near it considering they have half as much time to render a single frame just shows how talented Santa Monica is. And I personaly think God of War 3 looks better than Uncharted 3 anyway.

best looking console game is such a backhanded compliment anyway
Hah! Exactly what I thought when I read the thread title.

Technically it's more like 1/3 as much time due to fixed overhead costs. So yeah, pretty impressive.

But, y'know... console impressive. :p

I dunno. GOW3 looks better than any hack and slash title running on the PC so I would not just say just console impressive. Maybe that would have been true for other genres which have better PC counterparts.

It looks ok. I just can't muster up any excitement for this series. Maybe I'm just sick of Claytos.

I don't know why you called it a "hack and slash" title (it's more "action-adventure" with heavy emphasis on the combat, ala Devil May Cry and the like), but the game would inevitably look eons better if it had a PC port.

There's very obvious compromises they're making on the PS3, even with their first-party optimizations. Texture resolution in particular takes a pretty big hit. Anti-aliasing is also pretty poor - temporal aliasing is par for the course on most of these console games (though the only people who even know what a game looks like with no temporal aliasing are hardcore PC gamers like myself, so this is a case of 'you don't know what you're missing, so you don't care').

I mean, if you have a good-looking game to begin with, that game is just going to look even better on a good PC. That goes without saying, but I'm going to keep on saying it.

IQ is really good and its nice to see anisotropic filtering too, although as MP demo showed up, they've decreased number of light sources greatly.

Last of Us doesnt look that good, it has really nice art and great faces, but rest isnt that good and in bigger scale levels, it has really crappy details.

Oh of course if it were designed for the PC platform it would look way better but like I said unfortunately a similar example from PC looking as good as GOW3 does not exist which is why I said it looks bloody impressive even after seeing a lot of PC footage of these kind of games. The opening of GOW3 still makes my jaw drop
Also I thought GOW,DMC,Ninja Gaiden were the holy trinity of hack and slash no? Maybe I am mistaken.

This started like a gamefqs thread, and continued to do so. OP is a GoW fan that needs reassuring that his game has the more grafixz above all and adds nothing to what we already know.

Oh, and BTW, U3 and Forza (and dare I say it, 360's Witcher 2) are superior in IQ than what we see right now, that kratos hi-poly model is eating half of the resources and so the enviroments are bland and textures low res.

Which looks rather blurry in comparison.

Still, I'm not sure if I like GoW:A better than GoW3...

Both look blurry. But Forza Horizon is a bit sharper.

Forza Horizon is a combination of 4XMSAA with FXAA applied dynamically.

Performance wise, it's 30fps locked with no screen tearing.

Not really.

Compared to most PC games (especially recent ports like Hitman: Absolution and Max Payne 3) it just doesn't actually look that good. They do some nifty tricks with the renderer, but anyone with trained eyes (like myself) can't just ignore the problem areas. It has great art, though!

And, well, it's pretty clear my definition of 'hack and slash' is different from yours. It's kind of irrelevant anyways, so we can leave it at that.

I think it looks glorious for a console game, same goes for The Last of Us.

Can't wait to see next-gen games though.

Seriously ? -_- ?

You deduce simply because i have GOW display Pic ?

Shall i start posting direct feed of UC3 to show pathetic its iq is as compared to gow a ?

I was talking about IQ in general, and the alpha build miles better then what i saw with the last of us which also recieved a similar thread

I wanted opinions of other members

Oh yeah. I know there are better looking PC games.. hell Crysis on PC still looks better than all of this. I was talking about games within this genre on PC.Stuff like DMC4 for eg on PC still does not look as good as GOW3.

UC3 and The Last of Us have terrible IQ. It's really only Forza Horizon that's comparable.

Is it that or that you have been defending your point and denying arguments in every page of this thread (lol at TLOU pic) ?
They may be blurry and jagged, but they have absolutely best texture work, and I think they look better in motion.

The Witcher 2 on 360 is Black magic.
