Intro

It's 2013! The world didn't end and some great games came out in December. Expect a ton of more stuff coming out in the coming weeks, and be sure to take advantage of the numerous sales going on for all games and apps trailing off of Christmas and New Years (more on that in the section below).

-Tunesmith

What's happening?
So what's going on? Every month a member of the iOS GAF community will start a new thread for the chronicling of new releases, rumours, discussion and petty personal attacks that have come to define the fast moving world of iOS gaming. What's really new here is that the OP will also contain a list of all the best new releases for that month as they come out. This way we get to keep tabs on the best games and you (yes you), the mythical unicorn known as the iOS Novice will have an excellent resource to look back on to find games you may have missed. As months go on, Community members can also use their turn on the OP to pimp their favourite games and genres. I know we're all looking forward to the eventual Kairosoft special!

In 10 words or less Joe Danger is:
"Excitebike meets Mario meets Sonic meets Trials meets AWESOME" - Dragnet
"Rayman Jungle Run on a motorbike. With chimpanzees." - McBacon

mzl.fxnfgqxq.320x480-75.jpg

ibeAdOp5KFsYn5.png

Hundreds | $4.99, Universal
Made by the developer of old GAF-hits Canabalt and Gravity Hook comes a new puzzle game is simple in concept, deep in design, a puzzle game that requires quick fingers and deep thinking.

"The goal of Hundreds: Grow at least 100 points between the circles in each puzzle. Circles turn red and volatile while being grown and if they collide, it's game over. It's that easy."

Initial GAF impression in this thread is very positive! Plays better on an iPad than an iPhone/iPod though due to fat fingers-syndrome in later levels!

Space Agency | $0.99, Universal

Including this in December's haul as it was just recently discovered here on GAF, even though it technically came out in June. Build rockets, launch satellites, create a space station, explore the solar system! This is smaller in scope but similar to Kerbal Space Program that's available on PC. GAF-certified hit!

Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition | $9.99, iPad
The stuff of legend now available for the iPad! Play the original game and be ready to import your character to the epic RPG, Baldur's Gate 2, re-releasing next year for the iPad. Dangerous wilderness to explore and evil 'round every corner. Don't forget to save often and gather your party before venturing forth! -Minsc

Seems like a decent port with it's share of bugs (as with the original version), but the team seems dedicated to keep patching it. Get it here or on pc or w/e. it's Baldur's Gate yo!

mzl.bxypomtg.480x480-75.jpg

ibrlymOpmEIRCG.png

Cook, Serve, Delicious! | $2.99 (Sale price until Jan 6th) iPad - PC/MAC also available
Probably my favorite game of the 'restaurant genre'. Fast, hectic with tons of upgradables and customization. The writing is quite witty as well. If you don't have an iPad, get it on PC (will run on the shittiest ones. I checked!)

So a quick heads up, but Cook, Serve, Delicious! got a temp. price cut to $2.99 and got a large update this morning that brings Sushi and Fried Rice to the menu!

mzl.rjilzfkg.480x480-75.jpg

Giantbomb QL (PC Version)

Battle of the Bulge | $9.99, iPad
A war-gaming board game has never been so fun!!!
Play the famous battle as Axis or Allied, against 4 different AI (2 for each side) or challenge your friends via GameCenter async multiplayer or Pass&Play.
If you are into wargaming, get this game.
If you are not, get this nonetheless to see how an iPad app should be made.
Pure slickness. -PittaGAF

Q - Should I buy this newly released EA game?
A - Nope, most are hot garbage and will probably be a dollar/euro during a frequent sale.

Q - I just got an iPhone/iPad. What are the best games?
A - Best iOS Games Ever v1 / Best iOS Games Ever v2. You're welcome.

Q- For gaming, should I get the iPad mini, or iPad 4?
A- Both have their pro's and con's. Mini is cheaper, and arguably a better grip for gaming, but the screen isn't as great and the device is less powerful than the 4. Most games these days all run fine on it, but I'm not sure about in a year.

Q- I'm a new iOS user, what non gaming apps should I get ASAP?
A - This thread would be a great place to start. Asking here wouldn't hurt either!

Q - How do I back up my game saves for games that do not support iCloud save games?
A - Use a file manager program such as i-FunBox (PC/Mac versions available) - It's free and requires no jailbreak.
i-FunBox has a ton of different features, but for the purpose of backing up save games you would simply want to do the following:

  • Click the iFunBox Classic tab
  • Connect your iOS device, either via WiFi or USB, it should then appear in the Connected Devices list on the left side of the UI.
  • Under User Applications, navigate to the game you want to back up save games for.
  • Select the Documents folder and copy it to your PC/Mac - this will copy the folder and all the contents. This contains your save files and settings for the game (a bunch of .lua files).
To restore a backed up save game simply do the reverse.
  • Under User Applications, navigate to the game you want to restore save games for.
  • Select the Documents folder and choose to copy from PC/Mac
  • Navigate to where you saved the backed up Documents folder on your PC/Mac, open it and select all the files within it and open them. This will copy the folder and all the contents back onto your iOS device.
  • Restart/fully close the game itself and your saves should be back!

Ensure that the file structure of the game is GameName > Documents > .lua files after you're done (no Documents folder within the Documents folder!), otherwise the game will not recognize your restored saves!

Q - How do I hide my Real Name on Game Center?
A - Ever since iOS 4.3 your real first and last name, taken from your Apple ID, will be shown to your GC friends. If you value that information and want GAF's leaderboards to show your proper GAF nickname instead, here's how you do it:

  • Open the standalone Game Center app.
  • Go to the Me tab and tap the yellow ribbon that has your email written on it.
  • Chose View Account and you'll be prompted for your password.
  • Scroll down to the Edit Account Info section and tap on the Apple ID profile.
  • Change you First and Last name (you must enter both) to whatever you like (e.g. First Name: Tunesmith, Last Name: GAF)

Done, now that's who you're going to be listed as on your friend's Game Center leaderboards from now on. This will affect Game Center *and* your Apple ID. If it's the same account you use for App Store/iTunes (like me), you will still be able to use it for iTunes/App Store's purchases (you can still buy whatever you want like you could before) *BUT* in the receipt it'll show your nickname or whatever you chose as First Name and Last Name when you changed those fields. The first time you will use the modified account on App Store/iTunes, you will be asked to verify the account by re-entering the 3 digits code of the credit card's CCV security code (if you make your purchases using a credit card, like I do).

How to Become an Official GAF iOS Game Center Member

The List
updated: daily (mostly).

#RULES: How to get on the list / Update your profile / Add friends

  • Send Fuu a PM if you want to be added or taken off the list, following this text formatting:

GAF Name = Game Center Name / iOS Device(s)

  • When you add someone, add FROM GAF to the friend request and your NeoGAF name so to easily tell who's who.
  • Also send Fuu a PM if you are already on the list but want to update your profile with more info like iOS platform(s) owned (it's cool to know who has an iPad for all the games with separate SKUs), or to just change your existing GC profile.
  • We are on the list and, if you are too, it's ok to add us even if we're not best buddies; don't be shy: we enjoy having more GAFfers challenging us on the friends leaderboard.
  • Don't just wait for others to add you first you should at least add some of the profiles posted above yours if you want to get the ball rolling... It's really up to you. Ideally the last member of the list will be the one to add the profiles above his, and so on and on with each new member. Or maybe just add whoever you like, that's also an option.
  • Remember: your real name will be visible to your GC friends
...and that's everything for now. This is a live OP and so will change as the month goes on so check back often.

Thanks to Fuu for handling the community list and chickdigger802 for having done December's haul, plus another small thanks to (me) Tunesmith for the banners and graphics! ;)

Have a great start to 2013!

Reserving.

Right so the OP is a bit under construction (queue geocities .gifs), just getting the show on the road for January. Have at it.

(Emulating girlfriends title was too long!)

Will be adding bits and pieces to the OP as time goes on and I will use this post for construction purposes before adding to the OP and for temporary January events. :)

  • To participate you just need the game and to add Dash Kappei on Game Center: (Dash Kappei GAF). As soon as you fire up the game and play it for the first time while being signed in to Game Center, you'll be part of the Challenge. That's it.
Add "From GAF," and your nickname on GAF or Dash Kappei won't add you to friends.
  • Challenge organizer can participate but is not eligible for any prizes.
  • Screenshots of the TOP 20* scores (TBD) will be posted in this specific post and in the specific GAF's iOS Challenge threads that exist for the duration of the challenge, so DON'T add me on Game Center or at least don't compete in the weekly challenge if you don't want your real name to be shown. You can easily avoid your real name to appear if you follow the few simple steps on the FAQ Section above "How do I hide my Real Name on Game Center?".
  • GAFfers only, I won't accept requests from non-gaffers. Sorry lurkers.
  • Check the GAF GC members list handled by Fuu if you want to add others, but being on the list isn't mandatory to play.
  • Scores are valid only for the "This Week" section on the Leadearboards and those scores made before the challenge won't be counted for the full final results, even if mistakenly counted during the challenge.
  • You can still enter the Challenge even if it has already started, granted that I can accept your GC friend request on time. You can join the contest at any time, even if there's an hour to go.
  • Posting your new scores in the monthly iOS thread is encouraged as well as posting your Game Center profile for others to check on your score when you do so. This is not at all mandatory anyway.

Sonic Jump is free atm guys go grab it if you haven't already!
How's Sonic 1 on iOS BTW?

Ever played sonic on an emulator? exactly that with touch controls which work rather well, I only own sonic 2 but have no faults with it. When they first hit the app store their performance was rather choppy on older devices and the conversion to iOS6 has made the game hickup a little bit on iphone 4's, otherwise smooth as butter.

Alexios

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
EA has some good stuff, like NFS: Most Wanted and I imagine Real Racing 3 will be great now they have that series, there's no reason to advice against them as a whole, especially over other companies like Gameloft even. It's true about the sales (and maybe I wouldn't like Most Wanted as much if I had paid full price instead of 0,89) but it's true for most publishers too. For example I just got Wimp: Who Stole my Pants for free though I had considered buying it previously due to positive comments.

So I started working on something in post #2

ibh0hXwMOpgbiz.png

I'd love to have one of these again, similar in format to what the older ones used to be like. Do we have any nice ideas for modern games and/or prizes that can be used for this purpose?
The game(s) would need to have a score based leaderboard and no real IAPs that could be used for boosting purposes.

How about Tilt to Live. Score based, no IAP to affect competition and it has been free in the past.

Awesome game, but it's either way too hard or I just suck at grammar. There's never enough time to spot the mistakes!
I think it's hard because when you read that fast your brain fills in a lot of the mistake. Like I'll miss the same word being written twice a lot.

Any new iPad owner must get Carcassonne and the expansion packs. Lively GAF multiplayer community at a variety of skill levels. Plus the offline AI is actually decent in helping you to learn the strategy.

On another note...What other games are there like Swordigo or Zelda II?

Cheech

I can't stop playing Clash of Clans, guys.

It's decent, but there's not much game unless you want to spend a fortune on IAP. I'm still stuck on two builders, have no shield, and am basically just spinning wheels.

Into the Dead is pretty good though. Thanks to whoever suggested that in the last iOS game thread.

Wow Sonic 1 controls really well, but I notice some slowdown though, I think it's because I'm running an old iPhone model, blasted thing keeps crashing when I play Theatrythm =_=.

Fuck me! They updated TWEWY on Dec 20 and fixed Mingle PP, but I only saw it now! They also fixed the problems regarding the CDs you could only get by trading. Time to reinstall the game with my save and go after 100% and those last few cheevos.

【Version 1.1.0 Update】

・A shop offering the following downloadable content has been added:
・3 items to aid players in advancing through the game
・9 BGM tracks that can be played from the Item menu
・The following perks are now available after seeing the super-secret ending:
・CDs obtainable only by trading with friends can now be purchased
・Pig Noise Pins obtainable only as drops can now be purchased
・Mingle PP can now be earned from non-mingling practice matches
・Psychs now trigger more easily when scratching
・Various minor bugs were addressed

* Mingling is not supported across versions 1.0.0 and 1.1.0.
Please confirm that game versions match before attempting competitions or trades.

i like puzzles and dragon, though i might tire of it. The game reminds me of some of those terrible card collecting games on android that i played, Rage of the Bahumut stuff, but at least this game has SOME type of actual gameplay in the crystal matching whereas RotB had nothing.

No reason to link just to the ThinkGeek store imo, Amazon for example currently sells it for just $65.99 and it's eligible for free super saver shipping on top of that. Core for just $46.50. You could just have a single image with all the iCade family stuff, then information about iCade and its brothers' differences outlined while letting people look for stores and deals on their own.

I'll have impressions of the original iCade soon I hope, I've ordered it as a gift for my brother in law, but it's taken too long to get here. For now I'll just say compatibility sucks outside a few stand out titles and a bunch more lesser titles that I've been searching through, I can't wait to jailbreak for the blutrol and emulators combo. But if you can get it cheaper than the official price and seriously want to enjoy games like Blazing Star, Raiden Legacy, Metal Slug 3, etc, it's probably worth it.

My pre-trying opinion is that only iCade and Core are worth recommending, maybe 8bitty too, the rest aren't as compatible given the different featureset and amount of buttons etc which I guess isn't too bad when most games use few buttons but when official compatibility already isn't great then limiting it further isn't cool. And Gameloft's thing just seems to have laughable compatibility even though in theory games that wouldn't work with the iCade could work with that (and all other twin stick controllers) since iCade is more for retro and other such games, while iOS has a ton of twin stick scheme games too.

I already miss the Angry Birds Seasons nativity calendar-esque Christmas collection. I managed to end up in the top 100 on the leaderboards. So much fun.

Picked Thinkgeek as the example store as it was the one I could find which had all the accessories listed, along with their feature sets. Amazon has spotty listings for some and I don't want to link to random 3rd party sellers on there.

The iCade Core only supports iPad 1/2 so I didn't list it in the examples.

It's best to use one own's judgement for these things when purchasing them from one's preferred retailer.

If it ends up we only want to recommend the iCade itself I'll add on Ion's Amazon listing there as well.
