Last week, during a Pokemon commercial, a new announcement on the Pokemon series was teased for Jan 8. But today the official Pokemon site itself has updated, formally confirming that there will be an important announcement on Jan 8 2013 in Japan. It tells fans to bookmark the page to prepare for the update next week.

Sounds like there's going to be a new game? Could this finally be the 3DS Pokemon announcement?

I really didn't expect a new mainline Pokemon game to release until 2014, but if they manage to get it out this year, that'll be pretty big. Assuming that's what this is, of course.

I do think this will be a mainline game though since Iwata said the third year of the 3DS would be crucial for its momentum, and this is one of the few big brands they haven't released yet.

I downloaded the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 3DS demo from the eShop and I thought it looked pretty awesome with 3D on. I assume it'd look even nicer in a full-budget Pokemon game, too.

As far as I know they have two separate teams, and the main team hasn't done anything since Black/White 1 released in September 2010.

I was going to say no, but given that they're probably 3D models now, it should theoretically be a lot easier to offer a wide range of customization.

Change is scary.

They've been slowly moving away from sprites since the start of the DS. Almost everything but the actual pokemon are 3D now (with the exception of Reshiram and Zekrom who both appear as polygons twice in Black/White).

Even a human shows up briefly in 3D.

Mainline Pokemon games are the biggest portable games in the world. Making a version for a home console gives people a reason not to buy your handheld.

3DS is doing beastly numbers in Japan right now they can afford a little sharing the wealth unless they want to Gamecube the Wii U Nintendo needs to learn how to make these assets work together

smash bros and monster hunter have huge, large, HD-ready studios behind them. pokemon is developed by gamefreak.
