Media Create Sales: Week 51, 2012 (Dec 17 - Dec 23)

Sorry if this's been said.

Today is the last day of New Year's holidays in Japan. However, since tomorrow is Friday, many companies are having holidays until the following Monday. I'd say numbers depend on whether companies are going back to work tomorrow or not.

Just my guess though.

Are numbers historically lower due to that or about the same?

Again uninformed as I have no idea what last year's numbers were like but my guess would be with kids getting their New Year money that the numbers would be up.

That's for Week 01 (next week results). this week is 52, last of 2012, which should be lower than 51 and 01 but higher than the average week.

Very anecdotal, but anyway I went to my local GEO the other night and I was surprised to see that they had sold out of Fantasy Life. I had stopped by there on Sunday (before I left for a few days) and they had no stock problems at all, then when I stopped by again on Wednesday, they were sold out. I was just surprised, which is why I took the picture.

Yesterday, I stopped by at a different GEO and they were sold out of Fantasy Life as well...
hmmm.... Low shipments maybe? On the other hand, Inazuma Eleven 1,2,3 was completely in stock.

Anyway, just throwing this out there since there are no new numbers yet...

I had reserved my copy at that same shop and picked it up on release day. My copy!

Year-end stop to restocks and kids raiding stores w/ otoshidama money?

We kned Fantasy Life has a 50-60% sell-through in the first day, which is pretty high. Maybe it sold well during the weekend. IIRC, also Amazon had some stock problems.

Nice. Is that a special edition, or does the regular game come with all that? I was planning on buying the download version, but if I could still pick all that up, I'd think twice about it.

Also, as an aside, Uncharted 3 is 1500 yen (15 bucks) used at Geo tomorrow. I'll be going to pick it up!

Especially since the music is Uematsu, and apparently lovely.

- The mini soundtrack was a pre-order bonus. (available from all stores if you pre-ordered)
- The black DVD with a the treasure chest on it was available free in the store. (they were out at my nearest store when I checked earlier), but they threw that in with my pre-order.
- The "file" was a GEO pre-order bonus I believe. If you pre-ordered from GEO you'd get that in addition to the mini soundtrack pre-order bonus. On the back it tells you how to get a "Cowboy Costume" in game.

Fantasy Life is sold out everywhere I look. Amazon says restock in 1-2 months.

Its almost like Square were making excuses for Heroes of Ruin when they proclaimed the 3DS was a difficult market. Goodness know why it would sell badly other than a bad market...

How many new IPs have launched damn strongly on the 3DS now?

any anecdotes about wiiu?

Last time I went to Geo, Nintendoland was sold out, as was the Monster Hunter bundle. Everything else was in stock. It seems to be selling decently, but there's zero stock issues (the Monster Hunter bundle should be back soon).

In all stores I've been, 3DS still has the prime shelf space, with WiiU taking a third (or so) of Wii's area.

I wonder how many Japanese are like me waiting for the Basic bundle to be discontinued and have a 32Gb white WiiU. Probably not many. :(

If Fantasy Life did amazing, that would make me so happy. Level 5 needs a hit, and the 3DS could still use a massive third party hit (that's not Dragon Quest or Monster Hunter).

Not everywhere. Earlier I went down to my local Seiyu (department store owned by Walmart) and they had a few copies of Fantasy Life available, with the pre-order bonus as well! It's a more family oriented place though and they don't have that big of a game section.

That's also where I picked up my copy of Bravely Default when it was sold out just about everywhere else, hehe.

@farnham: It's basically in stock everywhere just about everywhere I've checked out. Although at one department store I went to the Basic bundle was sold out! I haven't seen a MH bundle available since release. They are all gone around here.

It would Balance out the Force that Animal Crossing New Leaf has unbalanced

Because we have no numbers, here's the japanese video game market from 1996 to 2011.

1996 - 1999: CESA
2000 - 2011: Famitsu

japrev.png

I don't know what's up with that software revenues from 1996 - 1999 (CESA data). xD

I can only compare the Famitsu Top100 from then.

1997 Top100: 38.517.623 units
2007 Top100: 45.584.604 units

Unless the rest of the games in 1997 sold a shitload, I don't know how they came up with this data.

Nonetheless, this is the best overview we have. ;)

Maybe higher prices across the board?

1997 was probably predominantly home consoles, while in 2007 they were handheld games in majority?

Maybe more of Top 100 in 2007 were sold at discounted prices?

The market had changed very much in the latter half of the last decade, going purely by numbers that's a 20% increase in volume sold, while the difference in prices can be much more than that. It seems reasonable.

How many new IPs have launched damn strongly on the 3DS now?

Bravely Default: Flying Fairy is the hottest new IP on 3DS now, with 263,798 units (first week: 144,909); in fact, Run for Money! has sold more, but I don't know to what extent it can be considered a new IP since it's based on a popular TV show. Other new IPs that sold quite well are Senran Kagura, Rhythm Thief and Kobito Zukan: Kobito Kansatsu Set (based on a book, but I think it's a novelty in the video game sector).

That's actually a very reasonable reason, didn't think of that.

Also, Saturn & N64 were much stronger than the Gamecube & Xbox. Plus, GB(C) > GBA.

And the PS1-software was almost on par with the PS2-software, if not stronger.

PS1 was a beast.

Also OG Pokemon was in full swing in 1997 (and for a few years to follow).

There is also gree, ios and browser to consider much of that level of investment would have been in the retail market back then and is harder to count now. The software sales could be similar now just in different areas.

One more thing to consider. Price deflation. The graph is probably in nominal revenue terms, not real.

Most games used to retail for 9800 yen new back in 1997. Tales and square games for 11800 routinely. Retail prices today are 20% off that. Part of Japan's deflationary spiral.

It wasn't him it was the dev team. The text is hard coded into textures or some weird shit

Thats the lamest excuse I've ever heard. This is more about the fucking gutting of Capcom and trying to make them look like a western company. First they could go in and spend the time to change the code or alternatively keep it there like Dark Horse does when they bring over a manga but translate everything else. The hardcoded text he's talking about is only some of the text in the game that pops out in cutscenes.

Isn't this is the same shit Sven said happened with Ex Troopers?

If this is true, why are developers at Capcom intentionally limiting chances of games coming overseas?
