The very first game that was developed buy Ubisoft was called "Zombi"

zombi_box6but8.jpg

So that kind of means that "Zombi U" is actually not a new IP but part of a franchise.

Mind blown
Does that explain the spelling?

From DYKG Pokemon Part 2: Psychic type's weaknesses are fears (Bug, Ghost, Dark).

Wow I can't believe I never figured this out. Though this may still be largely coincidental due to game balance. In the original game, psychic types were extremely powerful and bug types were fairly useless, so I assume they gave psychic pokemon the bug weakness as a sense of balance. Though I don't doubt Game Freak thought of it in a more meta way like they have with the other types (psychic beating fighting, mind over muscles etc.)

Also the video mentions Gengar and Clefable. I never thought of that either and it makes a lot of since Clefairy was originally going to be the main mascot of the series. In Japanese superstition, if you see your doppleganger you will die soon, so that also contributes to the idea of Gengar being an evil ghost.

Did the narrator really just call DK's tie an "artifact" of clothing instead of "article?"

I can't watch those without being annoyed by the voice. If English isn't his first language, that would explain a lot of the unique aspects of the voice.

While I don't think it's that big of a deal (Adam Sessler got on TV and pronounced it "Say-mus A-rain", after all), I definitely do notice how he occasionally pronounces things.

In that DK tie video, the way he pronounced "documentary" threw me off a bit.

But, I mean, I'm trying to get in to doing paid video content for Youtube, and I can't afford a professional voice over, so I make mistakes like that too. Sometimes it can't really be helped.

lol i think its just a nerd accent rather than a foreign accent. And I agree does make it hard to listen to, if you're doin semi-professional shit with alot of subscribers on youtube then you should get someone else who can speak fa christ sake.

You're a big guy.
While I don't think it is very nice to make fun of people's speaking voices, when you are providing videos which rely on voicework it seems counter-intuitive to have an awful voice. And damn is his voice awful.

Well, they aren't pulling in CRAZY numbers or anything. That video is almost six months old at this point and has yet to even crack 25k views. While I'm not privy to what these channels actually get paid, my experience in similar realms allows me to estimate it could be in the hundreds of dollars. Given that the channel is attached to a gaming news site, that might only be enough to comfortably cover operational costs.

It's not like GameGrumps, which pulls in 150k-200k views per video, per day. Those guys are likely getting paid thousands, possibly even tens of thousands. Per month. For shouting over videogames.

We all make do with what we've got. I've certainly considered hiring professional VO for my videos, but I've yet to even crack $20 in revenue despite all of the monstrous effort I put in to my shit.

While probably everyone on earth knew about this since months, I just discovered there's actually (supposedly) a Mirror's Edge 2 in the works. Not gonna lie, I had wet eyes while reading about it.

Alright, you can have your thread back.

he's american from washington state so i guess he has odd speaking habits.

i've seen a few of his videos linked here before and his voice didnt bug me but the donkey kong one stands out. when he says poplar instead of popular it made me do a double take. weird inflections is one thing, skipping entire syllables is a no no.

It's been in the works for a long time now, they've even done a pitch or two to EA about it (which failed/didn't convince EA).

ZombiU is a followup to that game from 1986, yes. That game was heavily inspired by Romero's 1978 movie Dawn of the Dead. Dawn of the Dead's international title used in many European countries was... Zombi.

As a resident of WA, I can confirm that no one here talks like that.

Unless he's from eastern WA, but those of us on the west side of the Cascades don't speak of such places...

But yeah, "poplar" threw me for a loop as well.

That thing in the middle of the lanyard that keeps both sides together is shaped the same as the old NES controllers.

What's up with this thread rehashing things that were known almost as soon as the Wii was released(the shape of the connectors/Wii & the Wii Golf holes being the same as NES Golf)?

Now and then we get people postinf cloudbush as though it's not the reason this thread got so big in the first place.

I'm from the east side, and you see a wide variety of quirky rural accents here, including the popular "I'm from Worrrshington"

It's been 6 years!

Remember that kid who wanted to talk about nostalgia and his favourite game from back in the day when he was a kid was Super Mario Galaxy?

Think about that for a second.

At first I thought that meant it had been six years since the thread was created, but you mean six years since the Wii launched.

This thread has only been around for... five years... holy shit. There's a fact that blows your mind, right there.

Nice one, man.

Please post more if you've got 'em.

Th rest is hard to find screenshots .. but I know there are at least 2 Metroid Prime references and of course the obvious ones like the shape of Rare's logo on the options

There are also small details that hardly anybody noticed like getting with rambi on a ledge and he puts all 4 legs near and the fact that the characters are a mix of real time and pre-rendered to be true to the DKC feel and the stand by DS animation

Bullshit, I remember seeing this thread go up like it was yesterday, I posted on the second page. No way it's that old.

Its not mindblowing but heres one I think. In Super Mario Galaxy go to a area where you can shift the camera to see Mario's front side at a good angle. Now let Mario fall asleep. Push the control stick once to wake Mario up but try not to move around to much.

If you let Mario just stand still after waking him up, he still has a half sleep face for a while.

Ever noticed how the boy and the girl from Secret of Mana look like the boy and the girl from Chrono Trigger?

The following is a quote from the creator of Secret of Mana, Hiromichi Tanaka, taken from the liner notes of the Seiken Densetsu Music Complete Book compilation (a compilation of all Mana soundtracks, released in 2011 for the Mana series's 20th anniversary):

[...]upon getting word from Nintendo that they were developing a CD-ROM adapter for the Super Famicom, we decided to start a project in a different direction from Final Fantasy IV, which at the time was in the middle of development and was touted as a next-generation RPG fitting the large storage capacity the new cartridges had. The development codename for the new project was Maru Island, and we were making it as a collaboration work with Akira Toriyama-sensei after we established contact through Shueisha. I frequently ran back to the office just to receive and look at the screen mock-ups that Toriyama-sensei did in the initial stages of the project.

Despite that, the CD-ROM adapter was never completed. Once everyone learned that the CD-ROM adapter was never going to see a release, they decided to abandon everything that had been planned for development since the very start, including Toriyama-sensei's contributions, and decided to revise the project in order to make it release into a ROM cassette. We said that we would wait for the CD-ROM to make a collaboration project with Toriyama-sensei, but when it was revised, it actually became an entirely different project with an entirely different direction. That was what later on was completed into the game we know as Chrono Trigger.

Thanks to the high speed of the ROM, it was possible to seamlessly make the action visible in the field without the need to make a transition into a battle screen. But in the end, the new RPG I wanted to start making — one that didn't have a command-style battle system (Motion Battle System) and tested the reflexes of the players — wasn't a title that existed at the moment.

Upon seeing that my goal was to make an action RPG, and learning that an ARPG was the next game we were going to make, I decided to make it into a sequel for Seiken Densetsu, so we reestructured everything to use the world setting we had already from the previous game, and Seiken Densetsu 2 was finally completed.

tl;dr: Squaresoft wanted to do an RPG with Akira Toriyama for the SNES Super CD-ROM add-on, but Nintendo canceled the Super CD-ROM, so the failed project became two new, distinct games instead: Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger.

Oh, my. Expect quite a few "Mind Blown"s from that Squaresoft bombshell.

Donkey Kong Country Returns is FULL of little nods

some of the most classics

DK sprite holding a wiimote

It's actually a little more specific than that, it's a direct nod to Donkey Kong Jr. Math for the NES:

Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger coming from the same planned project?
WHOA!

Also the girl having elf ears?
WHOA!

Didn't ever know this.

The latter fact I could never have known because she was never ever adressed as an elf or something. At least not in the German version.

Not to compare music once again, but I always felt that the "Manoria Cathedral"-theme in Chrono Trigger sounded like it belonged in Secret of Mana:

Incidentally, Yasunori Mitsuda was sound effect designer on Secret of Mana. After that (or around the same time), he did Romancing SaGa 2, and then that's when he told Sakaguchi to let him compose music or he'd leave Squaresoft. Sakaguchi then put him in charge of Chrono Trigger's soundtrack.

That's actually deliciously twisted for a relatively inoffensive game series...
