I thought it was pretty obvious that Cortana's theme had a varied presence in the game since it was mostly about her.

No, like I said, I got no capture card, and this is really more interesting if you try it yourself since the interesting thing is how your controls work @60fps.

Confirmed: Bungie's powerpoints have a higher framerate than their games.

But really, Halo 3 ain't no slouch when it comes to framerate. Its rather solid at 30.

I dare you to try playing Shatter splitscreen if you own Crimson.

A fucking MESS when it comes to framerate. Shit.

I'd be interested in making a video of that, but Youtube would only play it in 30fps..

Mediafire.

Or upload something for me to play around with in AE. :p

All bets are off in Halo 4 with splitscreen. That is a mess.

I wonder what the forge map specs will be like this go-around?
They can't have us targeting split-screen like in Reach, that would be insanity.

Why is it that when I go to choose a playlist in this game, my cursor is already over Oddball or SWAT, rather than just the top of the list? It's a minor problem, but rather irritating.. especially considering I don't play in either.

CCs are pushing for max local 1, it might actually come to fruition since those with control really like the idea as well.

If you're making MM maps, I wouldn't bother targeting past 2 split. Targeting 4 split w/ Forge in Halo 4 is an exercise in frustration.

I am not, and I won't.

BTW, Fyre, did you ever track framerates in any of the games? I haven't been keeping up on GAF, sorry...

Framerates in what games? I'm a bit lost here (also it's late)

I posted earlier wondering if your capture card allowed you to graph framerates somewhat easily, and if it would be possible to get Halo 4 MP FPS stats.
It could be interesting to have some hard data for the Halo games since impressions are all over the place, and sites like digital foundry don't really test MP.

But yea, no big deal if not.

So did you already try the 60fps thing by chance?

Nope and nope. I'll try it tomorrow.

The FPS-with-the-graph, no I don't know how to get an FPS readout in the first place of this thing. I downloaded Fraps and started it and it immediately added the FPS counter, but it constantly reads 60fps (what the capture card is set to ) instead of the true 30 in Halo 4. Hrmph.

Flythroughs around maps like High ground are remarkably consistent @ >60 fps with this framerate unlock thing as long as you don't go within 15 feet of water (where the tessellation ramps up a lot).

It's Uncanny.

It would be interesting to have a switch for low LOD 60fps Halo 3.

They already got the system in place for lower LOD, and they really push it with the splitscreen rendering.
So I assume you would just need a way to force it in fullscreen.
I wonder how much effect the addition of simulation would have on the framrate though?

Jtag Time? lol.

Edit: Just tried the trick in splitscreen and it seems just as stable on high-ground.

Man, you've piqued my interest. Hopping on to mess around now.

I remember in Halo 2 you could force Splitscreen graphics in single screen by signing in multiple local players then dropping them out. The last player would be left with split-screen level detail until the game ended and the map was loaded again.

Not sure how you'd go about doing it in theater, but Halo 3 supports dropping splitscreen players mid-game, right?

Wha!? I was searching for a way to do that in Halo 2...
I would love to play it that way for a bit just out of curiousity.

Is it in fullscreen for that last player? Record that shit.

I have a fascination with low graphics settings. I love how all the quake players lower every setting in tourneys.
It's interesting how some play the game so barebones. The Idle Thuimbs podcast had an interesting chat on this a while back.
I also like the NeoGAF "PC Low Settings Screenshot Thread" thread, which you guys should take a look at just for kicks.
I did a thing with Half life 2 and the console commands a while back where it looks like a DS game.

Ughh Forge maps look so bad.

Its funny people can make symetrical arena like smaller maps that play so well for Dubs. Only they are destined to look like turds.

Why cant the map designers just create simple maps like these for us to play in and leave the fucking garbage out of it?

Like they would take this simple map and add a bunch of turdcrap to it and make it all bad when all they need to do is less, cmon. 343 that kinda work ethic is right up your alley!

Wow, that frame-rate is pretty much a solid 60 all around High Ground, it's gotta be. Cool find. 60 FPS would just be so nice to have :(
In split screen it is seemingly allays above 60fps in my test. I did the canvas map and 3 minute respawn suicide.
In full screen you can go within 15ft of water and there are a few small trouble spots near the missle battery in back.

When the film ends and it goes back to 30fps, it feels like my eyes are shuttering and takes a while to get used to again.

BTW, If you hold the trigger down all the way so that it plays back at 2/3x speed and press the start button, then let go of the trigger and press start button again, you wont even have to hold the trigger.

Now you dont even have to hold the trigger.

Yeah that's what I did. I tried it in Halo 4 using CTF as the variant to adjust respawn times on Haven. No dice :/

Thats what I'm saying. I CANT, noone can. Forge does not allow it. They make good maps but the pieces all together and color limit means they all stink. 343 has the power but they add way too much all the time to them all (You know so those designers can resume + their shit for their next game)

Ninja and co tied on The Pit so it has to be replayed.

http://www.twitch.tv/ninja

Watch, see how thats The Pit (A good map) but its tarnished with all those lines and single colors...Simple long lines, not a lot of edges around things. Thats how its done (Midship + Lockout + Warlock)

but then they go and develop something like a Ghost Town (Which actually wasnt bad, but they added way too much geometry scattered throughout), its like they are more interested in showing of and modeling than making a game that plays well.

I think the absolute best reference I've had for 30fps vs 60fps was at college. I was playing CoD on my TV and my roommate was playing Halo 4 on his right next to me. When they're side by side like that 30fps looks downright bad.

Cortana wanted to physically touch the only person who she cared for. Can you imagine spending your life only being able to see your siblings but never hug them?

Touching his chest might seem sexual but what were the alternatives? Touching his cheek? Holding his hand? Hugging him? They all strongly suggest something more than a sibling-esque friendship. Having said that, I probably wouldn't touch my sibling's chest but who am I to judge the rampant AI.
The short story "Human Weakness" in Halo: Evolutions shed some light on this, and its a pretty cool little story ta boot. Its about what happened between Cortana and the Gravemind from the end of Halo 2.

Also the lighting looks like shit too. Way too many shadows.

Totally. About a week ago, I finished BlOps 2 and played a bunch of multiplayer. Then I played Halo 4 on Ragnarok the next day or so, and it felt so awful in comparison. My eyes/brain never adjusted by the time I was finished.

These matches are pretty intense.

Yeah, I've been watching and enjoying. The settings aren't my favourite, and the map changes are questionable, but it works for dubs, and it looks fun. I'd love to see more of this kind of Halo in matchmaking. It seems like MM is just a slightly more controlled version of Fiesta - which isn't terrible, mind you, it's just only like 1/4 of the Halo pie. There's a lot there that people are missing I think...

Haven is a pretty good map that mostly follows along "classic" arena style Halo map design.

I don't doubt that 343 have the ability to make nice medium maps, so hopefully that next map pack does just that.

That said, Simplex, and Dispatch are pretty damn good Forge maps, and they don't actually looks that bad in my opinion. Forge looks a hell of a lot better than in Reach or Halo 3, despite it's limitations.

I would love some Covenant type Forge maps, though.

I like almost everything they did to Abandon, but not Haven, those side walkways are just weird.

Yea I dunno if they are better additions or not but I think they make it so you can play Doubles, because you can get around easier (Without it'd become too slow or cat n mouse style)

Anyways people posted this : http://gyazo.com/d886af1a658ac0f3d4d8325fd4773c9c

Shows what a tournaments can do. At the time there were more people watching Halo than BlopsII.

The rampant personalities she split off to disrupt the Didact's shields were still in his ship when Chief made it go kaboom, Cortana herself was in the hardlight bridge, once he pressed the boom button on the nuke, she got it out of the way, and formed a protective shield around Chief, made of her rampant personalities & hardlight.

Well, that's my guess any way.
When someone tries to explain that scene, it makes it worse lol.
Arby's gotta come back. Only interesting character in the franchise.

I'd love to see the good elites return also. Haven't read the recent books other than Greg Bear's, but the whole Elite political unrest did sound interesting.

Yep.

I always figured it was because Cortana thinks and acts at incomprehensible speed. AI's in science-fiction are usually portrayed as perceiving time slower because their processing speed is so much faster than puny humans. I have no idea how fast an atom splits in a Havok bomb and if it's even possible to teleport Chief out, so I can't say if that makes any sense at all, but oh well.

I want to see 3 Ball Hot Potato now that we can throw them.

In addition to a toss, we should also be able to roll the ball bowling-style by pressing both triggers or something. Hell, or make it right trigger and just make punches require the melee button.

I just don't understand Grifball not being a rotational playlist around launch what with the new additions.

i caught ninjas tourney run from beginning to end. so exciting. though once they hit the winners bracket finals, waiting for the losers bracket to catch up felt like an eternity. the finals were nuts. monster definitely got fatigued, ninja did a good job picking him up every time he got knocked down though.

he got $75 for his half of the tourney, some guy in the chat donated him $500 for winning the tourney and in exchange for lessons/play time. but ninja gave half to monster. plus however much money he made throughout the day putting 60 sec adds on a 1,000+ viewers after matches.

he probably made bank. and won it all. it was fun to follow. makes me really hope for halo 4 on mlg circuit even more, if only half way into the season. i wanna see some 4v4 main stage mlg v1 setting extravaganza.

Yeah man I caught that, too, and I really hope something between MLG, Virgin and Microsoft can be worked out to make that happen. Or even some other league taking the reins.

This is interesting: https://forums.halowaypoint.com/yaf_postst175709_A-Great-Find---The-4-Shot-BR.aspx

Low FPS sympathizers are the worst people in the world.
30 frames per second is an acceptable frame rate. I know you agree because no Halo game on Xbox has ever ran at a higher frame rate, and you are a fan and avid player of Xbox Halo games. Also, running at that rate affords visual designers all sorts of benefits, which we all enjoy to varying extents.

I would rather have a Halo game with lower image quality a higher frame rate. Per power players' preference, performance is paramount.
