LTTP: Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete

I'm right up past the "magic arrow" part. Had lots of giggles and laughs so far. The cast of this game meshes really well, and Lucia is growing on me.

It's looking like there's going to be more variety in the combat system too, though I've been seeing monsters from Lunar 1 so I'm hoping they go away and are replaced by new ones (as I'm getting tired of seeing them).

One thing I will say is a major improvement, though, is that music doesn't cut out every time you go into a building now. It was annoying when I was listening to a song in Lunar 1, jamming to the good part, and then I go inside a building and it restarts. Doesn't happen in this one, aside from going to a new area where the actual song changes.

Looking forward to picking this up where I left off tomorrow.

I still prefer the cast of characters in the first game, so Silver Star Story will always be my favorite, but Eternal Blue is pretty damn good too.

My personal preference is for the first game for both SEGA CD and PlayStation incarnations, but because I was in the process, it's hard to be objective. Academically, I think that the second game does so many things better, but the simple story of the first game done so very well is what makes me love it just a little more. It's splitting hairs, though. Both are great.

Damn it, this is making me feel like picking up EB, but that shit is expensive as hell. Although I have SSSC, and barely ever played it. Guess I'll start from there.

All of my monthly playstation money, consider it yours if you get this up. Premium price even like Tomba! and Vanguard Bandits, price is not a problem. Is there a chance at a digital Strategy guide? I've got a hard copy of Arc 1&2 and the digital of Vanguard Bandits.

This kind of support is SO appreciated. Seriously.

Yes, we're really pushing to do the game and offer a digital guide like we did for Vanguard Bandits, but nothing's certain until the deals are done.

Oh man, digital copies of the strategy guides would be amazing. Any chance you'd consider a pin promotion on your website, like you did for Vanguard Bandits? I got some of those in the mail recently and they're a pretty cool little extra. :)

Dunno about that one. We did the Vanguard one because when we released the game we weren't allowed to make pins because of the original licensing deal, but when we got the PSN deal I made SURE promo items were allowed. I'll leave that one at "maybe". I still like the LUNAR SEGA CD pin best, although Dragon Force, Silhouette, Iron Storm, and Arc pins aren't too shabby.

Any chance vireland could get a tag saying what company he works with? It seems appropriate.

Also, I never got to play Lunar 2, so I would be among the purchasers. I would probably go through Lunar 1 again as a refresher, though, because it has been a looooong time.

Well, what does a Lunar fan know how to do, if not dream and hope for the best? ;-)

Oh man Eternal blue is one of the greatest games of all time, let alone rpgs.

Confession: It's one of the only two games that has ever managed to make me cry

Those who think 2 is better are insane. End game spoilers:
Zolar (or whatever his name is) is so tragically generic when compared to Ghaleon. That alone is enough to make Eternal Blue a lot weaker than Silver Star.

I'm in the minority that Lunar 2 > Lunar 1.

*high fives*

It's part of her story arc. Watching it progress subtly over the course of the game is nice.

I love how her changes aren't just expressed in story, but also in the gameplay (since you can't control her in battle, the devs made her changes apparent by subtly changing what she can/is willing to do in battle over the course of the game). ^^

But Ghaleon is in Eternal Blue as well so your point is rendered moot. And it's Zophar.

And generic or not, the part early on in Eternal Blue where you get Lucia and she's blowing things up left and right and then Zophar shows up and curses her is awesome. That girl who you thought was so powerful? Yeah, she's nothing compared to what you're up against.

Why can't they release these on PSN? I'd love to have HD versions of these 2 games with trophies, but I'd settle for just PS1 classics.

Lunar 1 SegaCD is still the best version of it? Afaik, there has been a couple of remakes/re-releases, but I don't know of their quality...

I like the Lunar games, but my number one problem with them is that there is basically zero customization at all. I don't have a problem with old-school, super linear JRPGs, but you can usually at least choose your party members and feel like you're making a decision. The closest thing in the Lunar series are those magic crests in EBC that you can equip, but most of them work just like accessories that boost a stat or two. The closest thing to "strategy" that I found with those was to equip Ronfar with the Earth Crest early on, because he has a good magic stat, his only magic attack does random fire damage, and no character naturally learns Earth magic.

I would love to play the games again to experience the characters, music, etc., but the battles and such get boring even before you replay the game.

Yeah, and Ghaleon is awesome in it (arguably better, but that's if you consider his arc as a whole. Starting from the first game.) Doesn't make Zophar any less shitty.

There are a LOT of parties involved in the titles and internal politics as well, so licensing is complicated. We are working on it.

Yeah, in the PS1 games, I actually prefer Ghaleon in LUNAR2 (love the scene where
he's talking to Dyne in the end, sighs, and fades away
. In the SEGA CD games, I'll take Ghaleon in LUNAR1 any day. He's more crazy and mysterious in the SEGA CD version of LUNAR1, and I like the story arc with him and the dragons better.

Got a bit further tonight (up to Master Lunn). The scene where
Ghaleon returns
was so bad ass. I saved right before it too, so I can go back and watch it again whenever I want (and I've already watched it twice :p).

The pixies in the garden always throw me for a loop - I hope that side of
Ghaleon
is shown in more detail, as I'd like to see if he's really as insane as he seems or if it's just a front.

I'll probably be marathoning this over the weekend as I'm looking forward to the conclusion.

By the way,
dick move by Lucia in ditching me on the mountain D:

That must be some marathon!

I actually ended up playing far less than I expected due to getting distracted by another game, but I got in a solid play through last night and will be getting in more tonight. I managed to reach the beginning of disc 2 and I'm up to the part where
Leo becomes "Mystere" and rescues you
.

Pretty hilarious, but I'm wanting to see just what the hell is going on with
Ghaleon. I just can't see him playing anything but top dog, so it makes me think he has some other motive or plot going on. Or maybe I'm just reading too much into it.

Either way, I guess I'll find out soon.

Very last boss was an epic fight for me. I don't remember what level I was, but I am pretty sure I was cutting it close on MP near the end. Luckily I didn't screw up after that. But that whole fight I was at the edge of my seat.

Anyone know why neither Lunar 1 nor 2 are up for sale on the Japanese PSN PS1 Game Archives? I can sort of understand Lunar 1 (due to the PSP port being available on the marketplace), but I don't get why 2 isn't up there.

Vanguard Bandits is one of my favorite playstation games. In fact I recently let my friend borrow it because he is a fan of strategy rpgs. Anyway I just wanted to say thank you for localizing it. I think I should play through it again when he is done. Hopefully I won't get the bad ending repeatedly this time around.

Lunar 1 and 2 are my favorite RPG's ever.

Lunar 2 is better in pretty much every way. Also Leo
is a fucking beast.

A PC port on Steam or something would be great too.

PC port exists and is a MESS of legacy code. So buggy it couldn't be made to work in English when we signed on to do it, and the Japanese released retail version would be considered unacceptably buggy pretty much by any standard.

Never ceases to amuse me that PC gaming is so non-existent in Japan when the PC-88 was dominant over there for, what, years?

I still have the packaging/boxes for Lunar and Lunar 2, but not the actual game discs. They were stolen years ago. I may try to get these discs at some point if I can find some clean ones, but I anticipate the digital versions. Especially to play on the Vita if I want.

Just got past the
white dragon cave
. I have a feeling that, unlike the first game, I'm going to have to do some grinding in this one (which makes me sad). I'm damn near out of mana restoration items, and by the time I get to the end of dungeons I feel a bit spread thin.

That being said, I found this combination of crests that "maxes attack power" and right now Hiro has 280 attack as a result. It disables abilities, but his damage is ridiculous enough that it's worth it (at least for regular rights - I'll probably change up the crests for boss battles).

Also, the dungeons in this game do feel needlessly long. I was able to power through Lunar 1 because everything was a bit more abbreviated, but things are moving sluggishly in this game because of all the extra "fluff".

Not to say that I'm not enjoying the game, but I wish it was the same length as the first one.

Yeah those crests are awesome. Pretty sure there were some awesome ones for Lemia that unlocked some of her stronger spells later on. It's been so long since I got to play that game though.

I have a combo on her that unlocks the combination of wind/lightning magic, as well as the advanced earth magic on Ronfar. They're pretty boss.

I find that a lot of Hiro's abilities are resisted or ineffective on enemies I'm currently fighting, and earth magic is usually resisted, so a little annoying there. That's why I'm glad Hiro is just in full on boss mode now, so he can beat everything to death. He's doing like 460 damage a hit now, which 1 shots everything except bosses at this point.

Not quite as many remakes of this one as it would appear from it's popularity.
Mega-CD, Saturn, and Playstation.

Vic can you say your couple of projects will be out before next gen is announced?

Well, Class of Heroes 2 for PSP/Vita (PSP emulation) is in the home stretch. There are a number of other projects in the pipeline, but I don't know if they'll be out by E3, but if not, probably not long after.

The problem, I think, seems to be that you can't really market a remake of a sequel w/o first re-releasing the original (at least for a relatively niche series like this). So they keep remaking Silver Star, hoping it will be successful enough to lead to a remake of Eternal Blue. Most of the Silver Star remakes have been inferior and don't really sell all that well, so then the series gets dropped once again, until five years later when they decide to try again on a new platform. Rinse and repeat.

Well cool, hopefully we will get some kind of formal announcement soon. As always I'll be behind you with my dollars and fandom.....

I'll be picking up tomorrow. Took a couple days off because I was getting annoyed with the dungeons. I can't just go somewhere and proceed with the story... there's a dungeon for everything

I'm at the point where I'm fighting the
false Goddess
and she owned me on the first attempt so that's where I left off.

Dunno, Lunar 2 just isn't hooking me like the first one. Lucia can't sing as well as Luna, she isn't as compelling, and Zophar is so far not nearly as fun or compelling as Ghaleon.

Don't get embarrassed about it. I clearly like them both, and I LOVE certain things about LUNAR 2, but as a package, LUNAR 1 is still my favorite of the pair.

Oh, I'm not embarrassed. I definitely like things about Lunar 2, and I'd say that overall I've been enjoying the game, but it's just not as good as the first one. Hell, I'm not even on the 3rd disk yet.

There so far hasn't been anything magical like the boat scene from Lunar 1. There was something similar on Leo's ship, but it didn't amount to much. Granted, I think it's nearly impossible to top that, but I do have more of the game to go so we'll see.

Zophar is a fucking bastard. I've spent 2 hours on him at level 51 and can't beat his ass. His 2nd form pwns me each time. I'm going into the fight without having full MP since there's no place to restore before the fight, and I only have 3 mp restore items left when it starts.

I really don't want to go all the way back and have to fucking run through the whole place again (and end up in the same situation).

Nor do I want to go senselessly grind just for the sake of grinding.

I'm going to give him a few more attempts in a bit, but if he continues to piss me off, gameshark here I come.

Okay... fuck. I beat Zophar on the first try after taking a break and getting some food. It seems the general strat is to just have Luminia
spam white dragon protect the whole time
which is what I did and it worked beautifully.

Would've been nice if I didn't have to resort to that, but eh, at least I didn't have to gameshark it and beat it legit!

The ending was pretty good. I really liked how
Ghaleon went out peacefully and then you find out later that he'd been talking to the pixies about you - specifically how he said that since he was brought back by Zophar he neither had the power nor the ability to resist him. It really furthered his character and he's definitely a favorite of mine.

On the other hand, Zophar was kind of generic and mostly shrugtastic as a villain, so I don't have any attachment to him.

Also,
I can't believe Lucia is just like "peace out, yo!" and goes back to the blue star.

Luna forever <3

The references to Luna and the cast from Lunar 1 were nice, and I really felt bad for Nall.

I'm on the epilogue now, but it looks like more dungeons and... stuff. I'm supposed to be like lvl 56+ for these and I'm only lvl 51, which means... grinding? Meh. Is it even worth going through this or can I just youtube the epilogue ending?

I'm in the minority that Lunar 2 > Lunar 1.

I see that I'm late to this party, but yeah, I don't think that is the minority. Better game. I still wonder what it would have been if they had either gone with a new story with the original crew, or what as I understand was the original plan- the original crew plus all the new characters. That would have been a huge party.

Perhaps my favorite game of all time. I love the whole series, I love RPGs, I almost exclusively played JRPGs at the time, and there is a huge nostalgia bonus for the Lunar games to me.

Also see that this is an old-ish thread! Anyways, I had difficulty with Zophar my first time through, so I would't worry about it, especially since you seem to have managed it.

The epilogue is pretty elaborate, and I seem to recall it being pretty awesome as well.

There's an extra epilogue if you go through that dungeon.
