For a film like this he needs to find a better VFX Supervisor first.

Ridley Scott with a good script bests Nolan any day of the week and twice on Sundays. The only problem is his propensity for picking/guiding shitty scripts before taking them on.

That doesn't make sense, duck! Star Trek is more actiony than Sunshine. Second unit director means heavier reliance on action. Sunshine has fantastic effects.

The entire third act of Sunshine is action! Lol. Star Trek uses a lot more ship to ship "action" which would be pure VFX. Oh wait, you're talking about Abrams Trek? I don't think anyone wants anything to be like that! It didn't even cross my mind!
