I don't know if this is mindblowing, more of a little secret, but in the American stage with the balloon floats of Tekken Tag Tournument 2, there is a Florida Gators reference. I searched online and couldn't find much beyond a GameFAQs posting, but it's there behind the Statue of Liberty when it moves more to the right. The guy even took a picture of it (albeit a bit blurry).

I wonder if any alumns worked on the game? Or maybe someone at NAMCO has a crush on Tebow that won't quit. Also, I only checked the NA version of the game, it might not be in the Japanese or other regions.

just read the gyroids in AC are very similar to haniwa, funerary objects that would be buried with the dead

Yup, they're even called Haniwa in the Japanese version of the game so this is confirmed. I don't think the real-life ones make bing-boing noises though...

"Amphibian" is the word they were looking for with the last one. Anyway, you can make the the axolotl thing fit if you assume it's a juvenile salamander, which are amphibian. Axolotl are basically the same creature, just stuck at that early stage of development.
The hedgehog thing could be explained with idiosyncrasies of the Japanese language. Hedgehogs are called "harenezumi" (needle mouse). And since the Japanese use "nezumi" to refer to both rats and mice you can make that fit also. (I think "nezumi" is their equivalent for rodent, in writing at least, but the category is obviously much wider if hedgehogs fit in it. "Small furry animal with four legs" would be the more accurate equivalent, I guess.)

Close enough.

Combusken and Blaziken ARE based on cocks, though.

I mean, they're a walking pun...they're fighting chickens. Cock Fighters. Blaziken's feathers even form a karate gi.

Isn't that the same story for Parasite Eve and Final Fantasy VII?

Yeah, after FFVI, the team was about to begin pre-production work on FFVII for the SNES, and Sakaguchi wanted to make it a sort of detective story set in New York City in 1999. But development on Chrono Trigger was starting to take too long, so they scrapped FFVII for SNES and Kitase and co. did some directorial contributions to CT instead. The NYC idea reportedly influenced parts of CT and, later, Parasite Eve.

Stupid me.

After 18 years, for the first time, I realized that the starship approaching Corneria in the intro of Starfox is actually the first boss on easy/medium mode.

To me it had not been more than some generic invasion ship never seen again.

I've not heard about NYC influencing CT, do you have any sources?

Here's what I've posted before about the FF7 ---> PE connection:

Midgar was originally New York, and there was no Cloud yet, his name was Joe. Nicknamed "Hot Blooded Detective" Joe, to be exact, and his partner was a "typical" hard boiled black cop named Bullet. They'd be chasing some terrorists who wanted to blow up the city.

This idea split in two, spawning Parasite Eve. Bullet became Barret, and Joe became Cloud, and THEY became the terrorists.

This is why Parasite Eve place in New York, they still kept that cop-buddy idea. Note Daniel Dollis' similarity to Barret. Single father, gruff, older male mentor type.

Boy, would FF7 be remembered differently if they HAD gone with hunting down terrorists who blew up New York...

It is the fire mouse pokemon though.

But yeah, It's an echidna.

Mistranslation - it's a fire RODENT. All mice are rodents but not all rodents are mice. Similarly, foxes are CANIDS but are not CANINES. Amaterasu works for the zodiac replacing the dog since they are related but not as close as a fox.

Man I want to punch people with that forced patterns things in Pokemon.

I wonder how many games Square released in the late 90s started out as a pitch for Final Fantasy VII. Tetsuya Takakashi and his team pitched what eventually became Xenogears to Square as Final Fantasy VII.

There's a lot of little neat things in Pokemon designs (like the Snivy line having the Fleur de Lis in their design) that always seem to be glossed over in favor of them, sadly.

It's really stupid along with the "grass starters are evolution" shit.

Apparently Sceptile is a dinosaur, not a lizard, and Torterra is a dinosaur, not a tortoise.

Yeah it's stupid shit like the ones above that are mentioned but not stuff like the World Turtle (Torterra), Rose of Versailles (Serperior), Sun Wukong (Infernape), and all that awesomeness. I guess that explains a lot of people thinking Pokemon are "just animals" without looking at the themes and inspirations found at them.

I mean really now - you think being an "ankylosaur" (quotation marks because they're not) is more awesome than being an awesome World Tortoise myth where the world rests upon your back?!

PokeGAF should get together and talk about the cool little design facts like those for every single Pokemon. Compile a giant list. Publish a book.

My favorite "neat" Pokemon design is the Timburr-line. Most people think they're weirdo steroid clowns but...

They're based off stereotypical Japanese construction workers, who in Japan tend to be delinquents. Timburr, for example, has a pompadour and his legs are meant to invoke the knickerbockers which Japanese construction workers wear (this was mentioned in an interview with Gamefreak iirc), while Gurdurr has the Japanese "middle aged man" afro, and finally Conkeldur has the old-man bandana. Furthermore, those aren't clown noses, they're "gin blossoms"...because, like stereotypical construction workers, they drink all the time.

The Tympole line is another one I really enjoy...Tympole, besides looking like a musical note, also resembles a headphone jack while Palpitoad has on "headphones" and resembles a speaker, which makes sense given the whole "sound" theme of the line.

Neat idea, honestly. Bulbapedia does this too, but they don't really go in-depth with it a lot of times, bar the "Origin of Species" articles they used to post.

Not to mention the characters who inhabited Ikana Canyon weren't fully dead, as you had zombies and old generals trying to cling to life.

Yeah Bulba already does that for minor facts. You can go to tvtropes too.

Also despite looking dumb Conkeldurr is pretty smart ("invented" concrete, uses centripetal force than strength, etc.)

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening has a bunch of Mario enemies in its side scrolling/platforming segments. Those segments are basically just Mario homages.

A few characters/enemies from other games also make appearances in the main 3/4 overview segments of the game.

Shy Guys,

Pokeys,

and Kirby.

Shy Guys and Pokeys made their first appearances in Super Mario Bros. 2, which takes place in Subcon, which is a dream world. Of course, Kirby lives in Dream Land.

Remember what else is a dream world? Koholint Island, the setting of Link's Awakening. :p I wonder if this was intentional.

EDIT: Oh, right, as stated below, Wart's in there, too.

EDIT 2: Oh, and Gordos, also from Dream Land.

Pretty sure Wart was also in the game, wasn't he? Seems intentional to me.
