Grev |OT| Shooting up the future!

Not a lot of info in the English world so just going to put this out there:
Grev's Gunhound EX PSP release will apparently be coming out 1/31 (not December as previously reported).

There's a standard and LE up on Play Asia.

The LE includes an artbook and a CD. Separate from both of those editions, there's a special package offer on the Grev shop that includes a B2 poster of the game. I will be taking the dive on this one, and I'm hoping it's better than Kokuga was.

There's also apparently a 2013 Grev character calendar, which doesn't have the best preview images, but probably has some nice Senko and Mamoru-kun artwork in it.

Gad,

Completely forgot about that one. It is the port of the PC-metal-sluggish game, no? Fricken' PSP.

Preordered.

And, I'll put up the Amiami links.

SE:

LE:

They are saying late January as well.

Border Down resin kit will be sold at the Winter 2013 Wonder Festival on 2/10 in JP per the Grev blog.

Might try to pick this up...

Also, Gunhound EX will have a demo version coming out. No date on it yet, but if you have a JP PSN account you should be able to download it to your PSP or Vita States/EU side. Will update when they put a date on it.

Has anyone gotten confirmation for the LE from Amiami? I'm still waiting to hear, and it's making me a bit nervous.

I got confirmation a few weeks back from them. It was one of those things were they emailed me about not sure about getting stock, then a couple weeks later another email came about being able to secure it...this has happened before.

Game is still on for the 31st according to Amazon, PA, and Amiami.

There will be a UMD passport version for Gunhound EX available (to those who bought the UMD version) for 800 yen. Availability to be announced. Good on Grev for doing that.

1/31 is the official Gunhound EX release date, so it's right around the corner. Date confirm here.

Just put in an order for the LE at the Grev shop. I'm not ultra-hopeful for this but we'll see... Task 1 will be figuring out where my PSP is...

Incidentally it looks like the Grev shop will be taking orders for the Antares kit, but only up to February 1st. Good news in that it will be available outside of the Wonder Festival.

Since there haven't been any (good) new shooters in the arcades recently, I've picked Strania up again since you can play it on NESSiCA cabinets in Japan. Man, what an under-appreciated gem. I saw the credits the other day and noted that the director for the game was one Masakazu Takeda, a name I hadn't heard before but apparently he did programming/direction on Senko no Ronde and Border Down as well.

Well,

I'm pulling the trigger on Border Down this evening. Got an unexpected free $100 today. Question: go for the LE or the SE? Solaris has the LE for $177 and Normal for $88, new. Worth the extra $90?

I do enjoy the cover of the Limited Edition on my Border Down, but I'd personally say go with the standard. It's a fun game, but in my opinion, I'm not sure it's $200 fun.

Yeah,

Decided on the normal and ordered about thirty minutes ago. Cover and white case looked better but not $100 better. I was struggling because all my current-gen Grev stuff is the LE cause I buy them for support. Getting the LE of Border Down is not going to be showing them support at this late.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Border Down is soooo good. Loved that game. And actually, I think the case for the standard edition is also white... at least, the like... main part of the case that holds the disc. Could be mistaken. Whatever, game is sweet.

Anyway, I'm curious about Assault Suits Valken 3, but not curious enough that I want to be the guinea pig for it. I love grev and all that... just... not that much.

Ah, cool.

Don't have any japanese DC games...well, Jet Set, but that one is all clear. Stoked to finally play Border Down. I burned a disc a few years ago to check it out and thought it very slick. I've not even looked at DC shooters yet, but there seems to be quite a few.

Yeah, all standard DC games came with white trays in their jewel cases. Looks quite stylish. As for other DC shooters, I recommend Zero Gunner 2. Helicopters + Psikyo = win.

Zero Gunner 2 and Gunbird 2 are on my wishlist...though it seems Gunbird 2 does not support VGA, which is kinda unfortunate since I'm running my DC through VGA right now.

Good list so far. I was also going to suggest Psyvariar 2, one of my all time faves, but that's also available on Xbox (DO NOT BUY THIS VERSION!) and PS2 (comes with a Super Play DVD. That's probably hot shit). Unfortunately, there isn't much left on the olde DC. Trigger Heart Exelica and Under Defeat got ported, the Milestone games are garbage and no one should buy then, and Trizeal is a bland game, made by a talentless hack that should not be on any one's radar.

Great. I just now got an email from Amiami telling me that they can't get the LE for me. Nothing like waiting until the 11th hour, morons! This late in the game, I probably won't be able to get one. Nice job!

Can I order direct through GRev if I'm in the US? P/A is nigh-on $90 for the thing, which is basically highway robbery in my opinion (that price includes shipping, of course). How can I navigate the GRev online store without reading Japanese?

EDIT: Never mind. I used Chrome to translate and GRev won't ship outside Japan, apparently. I guess I'm just not willing to drop $90 on the thing. It was acceptable to me at the $65-70 mark, but beyond that? It's just not gonna happen, unless someone out there has a good idea that I'm not thinking of.

Nice! Hoping Amiami still comes through on that Limited. Lol. I've never ever bought a limited edition PSP game...can't even remember the last UMD I actually bought. Been a few years.

Hopefully playable for non-japanese speakers, too. I'm gonna check out Assault Suit Leynos 2 on saturn sometime this week in anticipation.

Border Down en route! Hopefully that bitch makes it by the weekend!

I would assume (but we all know what that means...) that if you didn't get a denial email like I did, you're probably all set. Probably. ;)

Seriously, if they confirmed it, I would assume they're good for it. I'm just all surly because they copped out at the last minute on me. Had they said it three weeks ago, I'd probably be fine with it, but basically a week before release on a LE item? That's just sad.

However, I'm being offered some aid from here on the board, so I'm happy again!

Posted in the shooter thread, but it's more relevant to this one. Mamoru Kun is headed west:

http://www.siliconera.com/2013/01/2...-cursed-g-revs-shooter-is-coming-to-the-west/

Wow, awesome news! It won't sell much, but people should really pick this up since it's a great game.

I've actually been working on a guide for it which I'll be posting up at shmups in the next month or so. That will be great timing it looks like. Also working on a new score with Mamoru.

Edit: it better be the fucking PS3 version btw lol. 360 version's load times suck.

Nice. I was thinking of buying Mamoru-kun recently but now I'll wait and see how the western release turns out. I hope it has global leaderboards, but it probably won't. :\

Are there any major differences between the PS3 and 360 versions, or are they basically the same game? I know the PS3 one has better graphics and it's in 16:9, but I don't know if they changed any of the stages or mechanics or anything.

Glad other people will have a chance to play it, but it still kinda sucks.

Publishers need to be aware that having global leaderboards is important. Especially in shooters. Also just FYI, much like Strania, this game doesn't have replays, only scoreboards.

Yes, there are, in fact there are so much that I emphatically recommend buying the PS3 version. If for some reason this publisher isn't releasing the PS3 version, I'd recommend you import the PS3 version instead.

PS3/360 differences:

PS3:
+16:9 meikai gekijou mode. Similar to Under Defeat's New Order Mode, but a lot more fun because enemies that were previously on-screen help you chain, and the amount of score items on-screen at once increases dramatically (so much so that early version of the game crashed often when too many stars appeared)
+Mission mode in meikai gekijou mode: multiple mission objective versions of the same in-game levels, sometimes with tweaked rules like: enemies generate 3x the amount of stars, deaths (which normally appear when you run out of time) chase you during a boss fight, and several courses where you have to face super-tough bosses in a row. Mission mode is a ton of fun and the difficulty scales really well.
+On-screen gem counter. There's an achievement/trophy in the game that requires you to accumulate x amount of stars but the number is huge and on the 360 version you couldn't keep track of it, so they included a counter on the Main Menu of the PS3 version.
+Improved load times. Load times across the board are improved over the 360 version.
+LE features; Costume DLC included for free, really nice artbook with dev interviews

-Leaderboards for every mission in meikai gekijou mode. Really bizarre choice. You wind up uploading scores to the leaderboards after every mission, and since there's over 50 it becomes a chore.
-Game instability. Despite a patch to fix stability issues, I still get rare freezes which require me to turn off my console. : /
-Simplified leaderboards. I think this is just because the PS3's leaderboard libraries are junky, but there's no option to find your own score on the boards, and your score does not update immediately (takes a few hours I think?). Kinda weird.
-Slowdown on last boss is almost gone in PS3 version, making the game a more challenging clear. Trophies can still be earned by increasing max lives in the options, but clearing the game is definitely tougher.

If the localized version improved the stability of the PS3 version it would be perfect but that unfortunately probably won't happen I imagine. Still, in terms of sheer features the PS3 version clearly wins out.

I also posted in the other thread that I just bought this two days ago. :-/

Well, post up if you need some help. A lot of it is in Japanese and there are very little resources in English at the moment. I'll try to post a rough draft of my guide next week.

Yeah, english localization will be quite welcome. There is a lot going on with the PS3 version, so I never really played it...a bit difficult to understand if you don't speak japanese.

Thanks for the offer adversesolutions, didn't realize it was so language heavy. I do wonder if I should just sell it and buy the localized version on release.

Well its obvious they were only waiting for you to buy it so they can announce a localization. Thanks for this man! :)

If it's the PS3 port, I'll pick it up.

Does it say what is + about it...or is that just referring to the new delivery format?

They don't specify. They mention New Order + mode and new aircraft, but that could be just the DLC from the console version. The game will be at the JAEPO show in early February, if any one's in the neighborhood of the Makuhari Messe.

Ok, very briefly, my impressions of Gunhound EX.

GOOD.

So far this is a solid, challenging game. The controls take quite a bit of getting used to, but if you practice enough you'll get the hang of them quickly. However, be advised, the difficulty is pretty damn hard. You will die on the tutorials, many times. You will also die on the game's second boss MANY times. I would compare the second boss in this game to the Strania boss in Stage 4...harsh pattern memorization and a fight where you can optimize your damage, but not by a whole lot. Which means you have no choice but to dance with the boss for a bit.

What took me over an hour to figure out is that blowing out your Armor Gauge by pressing the Select Button is critical for getting through areas of the game where you take heavy damage. This is because this command makes your armored suit more maneuverable, AND restores your health to 100%. You will take more damage with your armor off but it's usually enough room to get through some of the harder enemy encounters. You will probably not beat the second boss without this, so remember it.

So, revised controls:

Koa Zo from Shmups said:
X = Jump, hold for thrust/hover
[] = Machine gun, or mega blast (+ R-trigger)
^ = Punch, or missiles (+ R-trigger)
O = Dash
R-trigger = hold down for secondary weapons
L-trigger = hold to lock turret arm
D-pad = moves left & right, double tap for dash. Up/Down aims turret arm angle.
Select button = Armor gauge release, increases mobility and restores health to 100%. Also means you will take much more damage when hit.

Thanks!

I'll probably know within a few minutes of starting the game if I actually go through with it or if it gets shelved. Hopefully not too complex, play-wise (or language-wise!).

Also, was playing a it of Strania last week. They nailed the 4:3-for-CRT perfectly...wish all games handled it so gracefully.

Not actually that important

There's DLC for Under Defeat? I've got the Deluxe PAL release and I knew nothing about that.
What's there and is it worth it ($$?)?

It was an additional ship. I believe the Rising Star release already has that on disc. Since it is additional content in Japan, it makes perfect sense to include it in the arcade version.

I gotta know... is Senko No Ronder DUO region free? It costs less than Dodonpachi Resurrection and looks hype as hell. If it is I'll skip out on a few things and just go for it and play it with my friends for awhile.

DUO isn't region free, sadly.

I need another memory card for Vita so I can get Gunhound. It sounds like something I'd like.

:C

How many gameplay changes were there made between it and the wartech version of its first game in the US? I'm getting Wartech for like $6 and I'd like to know if I'm missing new abilities or just new stages and characters.
