Also, I don't know what is really meant by "otaku bullshit" but nothing really stands out as particularly offensive to me. I'm quite turned off the takeover of Jrpgs by anime tropes these days - I can't even enjoy the Tales series - but there hasn't been anything that has really made me cringe thus far. It's been quite an enjoyable experience. Definitely a shame if SE keeps it limited to Japan.

The majority of it is kept within the party chat, but the entire Flowell part of the game was really cringe-worthy in my opinion. I mean, a country in which only women can live? With no explanation as to why that is? Seriously? It was just an excuse to give Ringabell a harem environment to unleash more pervy lines. That's not even mentioning the ridiculousness of everything involved in the pageant portion of that area. Other than that, the Victor and Victoria characters are just... ugh... Then there's the idol and her followers... Stuff like that.

I guess I just would have preferred it took a bit more serious of a tone with the dialogue and characters considering that the events happening to them are very serious indeed. Personal preferences and all that, I suppose.

Me too, I stopped using it as soon as the other jobs became available. In FFV they have the most freely selectable ability slots so you go back to them to customize your ultimate character for the last boss but I didn't expect them to learn anything. Although they have the analyze ability, that should have given me a hint.

Yeah, everyone (except maybe your healer) should have access to lvl 14 すっぴん if for nothing else than the ものまね skill, which is absolutely essential in my opinion. It lets do whatever the immediately previous command was again, free of cost. So, you could use the Monk's 点穴 ability, which normally costs 1 BP, for free after the first time.

On top of that, I seem to remember 8-4 talking a lot about the Streetpass features, about how they're fairly well interwoven into the game. That's one of those things that'd simple work better in Japan than in the west.

I could be wrong, but I heard that all the Streetpass stuff comes with an online alternative that uses your friends list.

Damn, seems like a lot of dislike here. I haven't finished the game (about 15 hours in or so), but I've really enjoyed what I've played. The game feels like a highly refined classic FF and it's really got a ton to like. The graphics and art are superb and the 3D really shines in this game(some of the backdrops are just breathtaking to look at). The music is also wonderfully composed.
Can't disagree with that.

I feel like the writing has a certain subtlety to it that is lost on most Jrpgs these days. The characters seem more "aware" of their surroundings than other characters and it really shows in their dialogue.
Not quite feeling that but I do consider the writing and voice acting superior even to the other highlights stated above, for different reasons maybe.

This is true, but to be fair, there aren't too many characters in games that I would consider otherwise.
Actually this is the first game where I consciously thought about the "unrealness" of the characters. I think this is due to the great voice acting. For something so alive you can't help but notice that it's a little off compared to reality. And also while other classic RPG characters may be just as unrealistic since they're usually portrayed in less detail, with shorter lines and without voice acting you can project more realistic thought of your own into them. Closure will make them appear more realistic than they are.

And even a SD character, if it's say Tactics Ogre or even FFVI the characters can have a lot of depth and credibility.

As for modern RPG characters since the advent of voice acting, I think the Atlus one and also the main series Final Fantasy ones (even the blandly written ones) are much closer to reality than the cutesy anime ones. They're mature anime which can portray reality pretty well, if they so choose.

I wouldn't call it otaku bs but it is very anime-ish. Although it has all the trappings of an 8-bit FF it does feel a bit like a Tales game as well and that's not just due to the skits. It also feels more like the FFV anime sequel than the actual FFV game. Maybe that's just what happens when you give detailed dialogue to classic FF.

FFVII went another route though, already attempting what FFVIII and X then did in full measure.

Yeah, everyone (except maybe your healer) should have access to lvl 14 すっぴん if for nothing else than the ものまね skill, which is absolutely essential in my opinion. The mimic's ability. Another one so abusable in V~VII.

Really? Is anyone interested in swapping FCs then?

I mostly agree with Hongcha's opinion of the game.

Incidentally, you can chalk me up on the list of people who typically hates JRPGs. Despite that I'm massively enjoying this one. Here's my breakdown:

+
  • Great Job/level-up system that takes on the best of FF5 but tweaks it to be slightly more interesting.
  • The Brave/Default system lets you input commands in advance and watch them play out. Useful for grindy areas of the game. Sometimes I can watch TV when I'm just purely leveling up.
  • FREEDUM. Game gets you an airship right away though you are limited in the areas you can go. The way it opens up areas to explore and alternates between airship/travel on foot has a good rhythm to it.
  • Some genuinely gorgeous town designs.
  • Dungeons are relatively short, as they should be in a portable game.
  • Overall story-arc/plot is passably good IMO, which is a huge feat for JRPGs which in general have story quality beneath mention.

-
  • Bad script. Ok I mentioned above that I in general like the plot of the game, in terms of how it carries you from one place to another, and I like some of the villains. But pretty much all the characters you control, besides Idea, are cretins. They have nothing interesting to say whatsoever.
  • While the story starts out brief, it seems to get more and more long-winded as it goes on. I'm in Chapter 4 now and not only NPCs, but major story sections get absurdly long. I genuinely regard this as the game's biggest problem.
  • Party chat or whatever it is. Seems like every time some big plot thing wraps up, a party chat will pop up and you're basically obliged to read it. Of course you could skip it, but what if that has some program flag that if you don't read it, you will miss some sidequest later or something? I'm paranoid like that so I wind up trying to read through these, but they are invariably sets of the most useless dialogue ever. Plus they almost always happen after an even longer event scene, so it adds another 2 minutes or so of reading. Seriously obnoxious.
  • Weird, conservative values in the overall plot. Save the crystals, which are the source of all life, because the evil empire has engineered them to power their civilization. I'm sort of sensing in the plot that this line of thought might get turned around by a plot twist at some point, but as is this is almost luddist/religious primitivist shit baked into a game plot.

Currygan

at last, for christ's sake
No FF branding to latch it on to. Voice acting & amount of text makes it a potentially expensive localisation, so SE may decide it's not worth it.

That being said, titles like this can be ~18 months before they get released anyway.

You're probably catching on by now, but the story is more than it seems. That's both good and bad--but you really need to play up to at least chapter 6 to really know what's going on, I think.

Also, you mention freedom, but it's kind of pointless without anything to really explore. The world map felt really pointless to me by the end of the game.

Party chat is completely useless and optional. I read through the first couple and then never touched them again because I felt them to be a waste of time. I had no problem finding and completing all the sidequests on my own.

Yeah, but there's no way of knowing that without hearing it from someone else. I read them all, and yeah, they were completely useless. There might have been a couple that actually provided some insight, but for the most part they were either just summing up the events that had just happened seconds ago, or they were some fanservicey nonsense completely divorced from the reality of the game world and anything you're shown on screen.

Well, I assumed they were useless fluff early on by myself. It was a bit of a gamble as something important could pop up in one of them, but I didn't think the game would include something like that. Mainly due to the fact the sidequests are clearly indicated on the map or through dialogue with town characters. Truth be told I generally do not care about doing all the sidequests in any JRPG, and in this game I just wanted to get all the jobs (which I did, without much problem).

But since there are optional quests, wouldnt these be considered in the exploration part ?

I guess. Calling them optional is a bit much, though, considering each of them rewards you with a new job type, fleshes out the world, and are sometimes even more entertaining than anything in the main story.

Well, i cant complain that the game has the most interesting optional quests of all time :)

So, is each optional quest related to one job ?

In the sense that you can never find one that is not related to getting a new job ?

In any case this seems very interesting, i wonder if the quests are random or are related to the specific job

Say if you were going to get the baker job, you would have to find ingredients, start the oven and bake to actually get the job

Is it like that, or just fetch quests and then the job is just a reward ?

You get the job of the boss you defeat at the end of any one subquest. And yes, the tutorial introducing the subquests says they're for getting more jobs and so far (20 hours in) there wasn't any that would contradict that principle.

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
So if JapanGAF has played the game, how is the story?

Hearing that it's the same writer as Steins;Gate has me intrigued, but I wouldn't think it's the type of game to get anywhere near as mind-bending.

I just got into Steins;Gate and it may be one of my favorite animes ever now... have about 5 more episodes to go, I had no idea the writer did the story for BD as well. Is the story as intriguing as Steins?

Guys, I need help!

I'm not sure how to update my street pass profile in BD.

Whenever I go to 作戦 and ともだち, I see my profile that says I've been playing the game for 45 minutes, and has Diz on level 10. I can write a message, but I'm not sure how I can change the character, and the level etc. I tried going to Members on the title screen and uploading my save data, but it didn't change.

Any idea how I do it?

You do it in battle. I don't remember the exact name of the command, but it'll let you record a character's action and upload it, and that corresponds to both your online profile and your friend summon.

Great thanks!

I should be able to figure it out from there.

edit: was fairly obvious. Updated!

Oh, come on. If Atlus or whoever can localize Etrian Odyssey IV for 3DS then Square Enix can bring us freakin' Bravely Default. No way it wouldn't be at least modestly profitable for all parties involved.

Change the name to "Final Fantasy something-something" and sell 300k in NA/ Europe instead of 200k. Even with the name kept as Bravely Default it would still sell here. There is a decent-sized market for HIGH-QUALITY*** JRPGs over here, despite what some people may think.

Bravely Default summons

http://www.siliconera.com/2012/10/0...es-fire-summon-monster-ifrit-with-prometheus/

Prometheus’ Fire makes a fire breathing train appear. In Greek mythology, Prometheus is the deity that gave fire to humans.

Ziusudra’s Sin summons a woman-like figure that floods the screen with water. Ziusaudra is from the Sumerian flood myth.

Hraesvelgr transforms from an airplane into a bird-like creature that hits all enemies with a wind attack. Hraesvelgr sits at the edge of the heavens and makes the wind blow when he flaps his wings, according to Norse mythology.

Girtablilu is a giant scorpion that makes the earth shake when it slams both of its claws into the ground. Girtablilu are servants of the sun god Shamash in the Epic of Gilgamesh.

Deus Ex is a giant machine that builds up electric energy and shoots lightning. Square Enix seems to have taken inspiration from the phrase "deus ex machina" for this summon. I wonder if this was a missed opportunity to make a chibi Adam Jensen since Deus Ex: Human Revolution is simply called Deus Ex in Japan.

Found this info on summons, look really amazing :)

Are they like older FFs, where you just summon and do damage ?

Are they upgradable ?

There are also some mature (=sexual) themes woven into the story that would probably get censored or prevent the game from being localized at all. I think this is one of the major hurdles for the game's localization, but one that most people asking for a localization don't know about or aren't properly considering.

Also, 4 Warriors of Light sold poorly in the USA, which does not help BD's chances.

This mindset needs to end. People in North America can handle sexual themes as well as anyone else in the world.

extralite

Member
Well, the main targets of the sexual jokes and situations are 15 and 17. The character models make them look like they are 10.

Which incidentally is also the minimum age at which you can buy the game in Japan. It is true that the cutesy look is bound to attract an audience to which the content of the game will be inappropriate. So there is the question of who the market for this game would be in the West.

Also although sexual themes were present in older FF games and were censored until FFVII, the treatment of such themes is on a whole different level here. Hence the age rating.

I've been having the most fun being stuck on a boss battle.

I don't think it's a difficult boss really, but just when I think I have him under control I'm struggling for life and dying. Will summon a friend next time.

Spoiler tags for which boss:
this is in the Water shrine

It's been a while where I enjoy a battle system so much to enjoy redoing a battle a few times.

Are the summons upgradable ? Or scale by your stats anyway ?

When you summon a friend, the stats and attack used are based on what your friend had set when they uploaded. Regular summons scale with magic attack.

There is no upgrade screen for each summon though like say FF10 ?

BTW, has anyone got the Japanese guide ? Seems amazing, it has very cool art

If someone has it, what would you rate it (considering someone cant actually read it), from an artistic collectors point of view

Sorry for bringing up this old thread. I'm still playing this game and want to give further impressions!

I'm really enjoying this scenario more than I did the last one. I've found a combination of jobs and skills that I like (it's a
valkyrie, monk, time mage, summoner
).

Currently stuck at another boss, this time I'm at the
boss in front of the fire crystal
. Haven't even worked out a strategy yet, but I'm planning on doing so tomorrow morning. I've yet to grind, and I hope I don't have to now. (I would like zero hints on how to beat him please. :) )

I started playing this game a lot recently to finish it for Dragon Quest VII, but in the meantime I've found I'm having a really good time with it.

It'd be dumb for the West not to get it. The market is starved for a game like this. It wouldn't hurt to change some of the more pervy parts though.

The further I get in this game, the more I like it. I think I've completed 3/4's of it now, and am exciting for this next chapter.

I took my 3DS out today just to street pass some strong people; however my dragoon (valkyrie?) is pretty strong already.

That last boss I was stuck on was legitimately hard, and it's been a long time since I've had such fun.

Now if Square-Enix made a game like this with a storytelling style like VI... that'd be the best thing in the world (and could possibly surpass VI if you ignore the nostalgia).

Finished the game this morning with my clock at around 75 hours. Posting in this thread because the more recent threads celebrating its impending localization don't seem to have people discussing spoilers.

THIS WAS SUCH AN AMAZING GAME. We all already know that the music and art is great, so I won't go into them. I was constantly looking forward to getting new jobs and abilities to play with, and it had a great sense of adventure to it. Flying around with the Eshalot early on felt fantastic.

I think it was a bit too easy though, particularly from chapter 2 onwards. After I unlocked the Valkyrie job I just gave Tiz Two-Hand Grip and a strong weapon and two Crescent Moons from him would usually weaken mooks severely or even kill them outright. I didn't have much incentive to experiment with the other physical classes for a large portion of the game after that.

And once one of your characters learns the skill from the Devout that significantly increases your healing capability, you save a lot of MP by being able to use cheaper heals. I did face a roadblock in chapter 4, thanks to
Lester's castle, but when I finally cleared that, little remaining in the game posed a challenge, and when I eventually refought him in chapter 5 and learnt Energy Blast and Bone Crush, the difficulty of the game further dropped.

Sadly I got spoiled on a few matters beforehand. For one, I bought a used copy, which means when I booted it up
the title screen had the subtitle read Lying Airy. I didn't think much of it at first, but I remembered some posts here mentioning that the subtitle was significant, and after I started the game I noticed the subtitle had gone back to reading Flying Fairy. So I pretty much put two and two together and realized something was up with her. That moment in the Mithril Mines where she's pushing you to release the crystals instead of saving the kid from falling into lava pretty much confirmed her intentions.

Near the end of chapter 4 I was searching for the location of a hidden chest, so I went to a Japanese wiki and noticed
the chapter title for 5 contained the word for 'yesterday'. And then I realized that in the list of maps on the wiki, I had visited most of those locations, which led to me figuring out the time travel thing shortly before it happened.

This was also where I got spoiled on the fact that
you could break the crystals. I waited until the end of chapter 6 to try it out, and easily beat that route. I actually thought the game was done at that point, and put it away for a while before I found out you get another ending if you play all the cycles to completion. I ended up levelling to 99 while exploring the bonus dungeon (that skill from the last job that allows you to instantly kill all enemies weaker than you at the start of battle helped a lot). I even killed the bonus boss (I got kind of lucky, I wasn't aware that the dog could resummon a new Adventurer and they both happened to die within the same turn). Despite being at level 99, I nearly lost to the final form of Uroboros, as its Disaster attack was easily taking off more than half of my party's HP.

There are too many interruptions in the final boss fight. I wished they had the decency to at least restore your HP in between forms. I liked how the 'help from parallel worlds' came from people in your friends list, but that moment was slightly marred for me by the fact that I didn't have any so they had to use random stand-ins.

Some little moments I liked:
Anies saying her 拒否します!when Airy is taunting you during her fight, when you haven't heard her say that catchphrase for nearly half the game. Served as a nice callback.
Another moment that hit me pretty hard was when she realized that she met Airy while she was fresh from killing another set of adventurers.
I was expecting Anazel to look like Ringabel the moment they were doing the dramatic unmask, but I thought they were going to be twin brothers, or for Anazel to be the one who was out of place. I continued to assume that after having read D's and Anazel's journals. The reveal blew my mind.
The fact that D's journal existed at all! Being able to see what was coming in future, but not having the context to understand them, yet finding the predictions to be slightly off when you finally encounter the predicted events was an interesting mystery to unravel.
Airy's wings changing number was a cool detail.
Anies' pendant connecting the different worlds, and also in-game being the way you summon friends to fight for you was a clever way to tie the story and gameplay together.

Some stuff I didn't get:
Why did Airy kill everyone in Ringabel's original world? Wouldn't she have tried to string them along for another 5 cycles?
I had trouble understanding Lester's backstory when he's narrating it to you. Reading it in D's journal helped, but not much. As I understand, he was born 2400 years ago, and his family worked for the king. One day his castle was sieged, and his parents were killed. In desperation he set fire to his own castle, and he heard a voice inviting him to get eternal life. 500 years later, he begun regular fights against the sage from Yuruyana, until their final fight where they encountered the angel, who looked exactly like Anies. She warned them of an impending calamity, and they set aside their differences to avert it. Is that the gist of his story?
Who was the angel anyway? I thought it would be an Anies from a parallel universe who'd gone back to warn them, but I don't think the game ever explicitly explains it.
Why did Tiz die at the end? Someone early in the game mentioned sensing another soul in Tiz, I think it was Melphina the Summoner. Could that be related?
There seems to be other Airys in other parallel worlds. I thought there'd be only one in all of them.
At the end of the game a fairy thanks you for stopping her sister's (Airy) plan. While summoning Uroboros, Airy mentioned that Uroboros created her. So would that other fairy also be created by Uroboros? (I'm not expecting we'd get an answer to this until we ever get a sequel)
